Balak Sends for Balaam
Then the sons of Israel journeyed, and camped in the plains of Moab beyond the Jordan opposite Jericho.

Balak, der Sohn Zippors, hatte gesehen, was Israel den Amoritern alles angetan hatte.
Now Balak the son of Zippor saw all that Israel had done to the Amorites.
Moab erschrak sehr vor dem Volk, weil es so groß war, und Moab packte das Grauen vor den Israeliten.
So Moab was in great fear because of the people, for they were numerous; and Moab was in dread of the sons of Israel.
Da sagte Moab zu den Ältesten von Midian: Jetzt wird uns die Versammlung ringsum alles kahl fressen, wie die Rinder das Gras auf den Weiden kahl fressen. Damals war Balak, der Sohn Zippors, König von Moab.
Moab said to the elders of Midian, “Now this horde will lick up all that is around us, as the ox licks up the grass of the field.” And Balak the son of Zippor was king of Moab at that time.
Er schickte Boten zu Bileam, dem Sohn Beors, nach Petor am Strom, ins Land seiner Stammesgenossen, um ihn rufen zu lassen. Er ließ ihm sagen: Siehe, aus Ägypten ist ein Volk ausgezogen, siehe, es verdeckt den Blick auf das Land und hat sich mir gegenüber niedergelassen.
So he sent messengers to Balaam the son of Beor, at Pethor, which is near the River, in the land of the sons of his people, to call him, saying, “Behold, a people came out of Egypt; behold, they cover the surface of the land, and they are living opposite me.
Darum komm her und verfluch mir dieses Volk; denn es ist zu mächtig für mich. Vielleicht kann ich es dann schlagen und aus dem Land vertreiben. Ich weiß: Wen du segnest, der ist gesegnet; wen du verfluchst, der ist verflucht.
“Now, therefore, please come, curse this people for me since they are too mighty for me; perhaps I may be able to defeat them and drive them out of the land. For I know that he whom you bless is blessed, and he whom you curse is cursed.”
Die Ältesten von Moab und die Ältesten von Midian machten sich auf den Weg, mit Wahrsagerlohn in den Händen. Als sie zu Bileam kamen, wiederholten sie ihm die Worte Balaks.
So the elders of Moab and the elders of Midian departed with the fees for divination in their hand; and they came to Balaam and repeated Balak’s words to him.
Bileam sagte zu ihnen: Bleibt über Nacht hier, dann werde ich euch ein Wort überbringen, das der HERR zu mir sagen wird. Da blieben die Hofleute aus Moab bei Bileam.
He said to them, “Spend the night here, and I will bring word back to you as the LORD may speak to me.” And the leaders of Moab stayed with Balaam.
Gott kam zu Bileam und fragte ihn: Wer sind diese Männer bei dir?
Then God came to Balaam and said, “Who are these men with you?”
Bileam antwortete Gott: Balak, der Sohn Zippors, der König von Moab, hat Boten zu mir geschickt und lässt mir sagen:
Balaam said to God, “Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab, has sent word to me,
Siehe, das Volk, das aus Ägypten ausgezogen ist, verdeckt den Blick auf das Land. Darum komm und verwünsch es für mich! Vielleicht kann ich es dann im Kampf besiegen und vertreiben.
‘Behold, there is a people who came out of Egypt and they cover the surface of the land; now come, curse them for me; perhaps I may be able to fight against them and drive them out.’”
Gott antwortete Bileam: Geh nicht mit! Verfluch das Volk nicht; denn es ist gesegnet.
God said to Balaam, “Do not go with them; you shall not curse the people, for they are blessed.”
Am Morgen stand Bileam auf und sagte zu den Hofleuten Balaks: Kehrt in euer Land zurück; denn der HERR erlaubt mir nicht, mit euch zu gehen.
So Balaam arose in the morning and said to Balak’s leaders, “Go back to your land, for the LORD has refused to let me go with you.”
Da machten sich die Hofleute aus Moab auf den Weg und kehrten zu Balak zurück. Sie berichteten: Bileam hat sich geweigert, mit uns zu kommen.
The leaders of Moab arose and went to Balak and said, “Balaam refused to come with us.”
Balak schickte noch einmal Hofleute aus, mehr und vornehmere als das erste Mal.
Then Balak again sent leaders, more numerous and more distinguished than the former.
Sie kamen zu Bileam und sagten zu ihm: So sagt Balak, der Sohn Zippors: Lass dich nicht abhalten, zu mir zu kommen!
They came to Balaam and said to him, “Thus says Balak the son of Zippor, ‘Let nothing, I beg you, hinder you from coming to me;
Ich will dir einen sehr hohen Lohn geben; alles, was du von mir verlangst, will ich tun. Nur komm und verwünsch mir dieses Volk!
for I will indeed honor you richly, and I will do whatever you say to me. Please come then, curse this people for me.’”
Bileam antwortete den Dienern Balaks: Auch wenn mir Balak sein Haus voll Silber und Gold gäbe, könnte ich dem Befehl des HERRN, meines Gottes, nicht zuwiderhandeln, weder in kleinen noch in großen Dingen.
Balaam replied to the servants of Balak, “Though Balak were to give me his house full of silver and gold, I could not do anything, either small or great, contrary to the command of the LORD my God.
Doch bleibt auch ihr jetzt über Nacht hier, bis ich weiß, was der HERR weiter zu mir sagt.
“Now please, you also stay here tonight, and I will find out what else the LORD will speak to me.”
In der Nacht kam Gott zu Bileam und sprach zu ihm: Wenn die Männer gekommen sind, um dich zu holen, dann mach dich auf den Weg und geh mit! Aber nur das Wort, das ich dir sagen werde, darfst du tun!
God came to Balaam at night and said to him, “If the men have come to call you, rise up and go with them; but only the word which I speak to you shall you do.”
Am Morgen stand Bileam auf, sattelte seine Eselin und ging mit den Hofleuten aus Moab.
So Balaam arose in the morning, and saddled his donkey and went with the leaders of Moab.
Aber Gott wurde zornig, weil Bileam mitging, und der Engel des HERRN trat Bileam als Widersacher in den Weg, als Bileam auf seiner Eselin dahinritt, begleitet von zwei jungen Männern.
The Angel and Balaam
But God was angry because he was going, and the angel of the LORD took his stand in the way as an adversary against him. Now he was riding on his donkey and his two servants were with him.
Die Eselin sah den Engel des HERRN auf dem Weg stehen, mit dem gezückten Schwert in der Hand, und sie verließ den Weg und wich ins Feld aus. Da schlug sie Bileam, um sie auf den Weg zurückzubringen.
When the donkey saw the angel of the LORD standing in the way with his drawn sword in his hand, the donkey turned off from the way and went into the field; but Balaam struck the donkey to turn her back into the way.
Darauf stellte sich der Engel des HERRN auf den engen Weg zwischen den Weinbergen, der zu beiden Seiten Mauern hatte.
Then the angel of the LORD stood in a narrow path of the vineyards, with a wall on this side and a wall on that side.
Als die Eselin den Engel des HERRN sah, drückte sie sich an der Mauer entlang und drückte dabei das Bein Bileams gegen die Mauer. Da schlug Bileam sie wieder.
When the donkey saw the angel of the LORD, she pressed herself to the wall and pressed Balaam’s foot against the wall, so he struck her again.
Der Engel des HERRN ging weiter und stellte sich an eine enge Stelle, wo es weder rechts noch links eine Möglichkeit gab auszuweichen.
The angel of the LORD went further, and stood in a narrow place where there was no way to turn to the right hand or the left.
Als die Eselin den Engel des HERRN sah, ging sie unter Bileam in die Knie. Bileam aber wurde wütend und schlug die Eselin mit dem Stock.
When the donkey saw the angel of the LORD, she lay down under Balaam; so Balaam was angry and struck the donkey with his stick.
Da öffnete der HERR der Eselin den Mund und die Eselin sagte zu Bileam: Was habe ich dir getan, dass du mich jetzt schon zum dritten Mal schlägst?
And the LORD opened the mouth of the donkey, and she said to Balaam, “What have I done to you, that you have struck me these three times?”
Bileam erwiderte der Eselin: Weil du mich verhöhnst. Hätte ich ein Schwert dabei, dann hätte ich dich jetzt schon umgebracht.
Then Balaam said to the donkey, “Because you have made a mockery of me! If there had been a sword in my hand, I would have killed you by now.”
Die Eselin antwortete Bileam: Bin ich nicht deine Eselin, auf der du seit eh und je bis heute geritten bist? War es etwa je meine Gewohnheit, mich so zu benehmen? Da sagte er: Nein.
The donkey said to Balaam, “Am I not your donkey on which you have ridden all your life to this day? Have I ever been accustomed to do so to you?” And he said, “No.”
Nun öffnete der HERR dem Bileam die Augen und er sah den Engel des HERRN auf dem Weg stehen, mit dem gezückten Schwert in der Hand. Da verneigte sich Bileam und warf sich auf sein Gesicht nieder.
Then the LORD opened the eyes of Balaam, and he saw the angel of the LORD standing in the way with his drawn sword in his hand; and he bowed all the way to the ground.
Der Engel des HERRN sagte zu ihm: Warum hast du deine Eselin dreimal geschlagen? Siehe, ich bin dir als Widersacher in den Weg getreten, weil der Weg in meinen Augen abschüssig ist.
The angel of the LORD said to him, “Why have you struck your donkey these three times? Behold, I have come out as an adversary, because your way was contrary to me.
Die Eselin hat mich gesehen und ist mir schon dreimal ausgewichen. Wäre sie mir nicht ausgewichen, dann hätte ich dich jetzt schon umgebracht, sie aber am Leben gelassen.
“But the donkey saw me and turned aside from me these three times. If she had not turned aside from me, I would surely have killed you just now, and let her live.”
Bileam antwortete dem Engel des HERRN: Ich habe gesündigt, weil ich nicht erkannt habe, dass du dich mir in den Weg gestellt hast. Jetzt aber will ich umkehren, wenn mein Weg in deinen Augen böse ist.
Balaam said to the angel of the LORD, “I have sinned, for I did not know that you were standing in the way against me. Now then, if it is displeasing to you, I will turn back.”
Der Engel des HERRN antwortete Bileam: Geh mit den Männern, aber rede nichts, außer was ich dir sage! Da ging Bileam mit den Hofleuten Balaks.
But the angel of the LORD said to Balaam, “Go with the men, but you shall speak only the word which I tell you.” So Balaam went along with the leaders of Balak.
Als Balak hörte, dass Bileam kam, ging er ihm entgegen bis zur Grenzstadt Moabs am Arnon, unmittelbar an der Grenze.
When Balak heard that Balaam was coming, he went out to meet him at the city of Moab, which is on the Arnon border, at the extreme end of the border.
Balak sagte zu Bileam: Habe ich dich nicht rufen lassen? Warum bist du nicht zu mir gekommen? Kann ich dir etwa keinen Lohn geben?
Then Balak said to Balaam, “Did I not urgently send to you to call you? Why did you not come to me? Am I really unable to honor you?”
Bileam antwortete Balak: Siehe, jetzt bin ich zu dir gekommen. Aber kann ich jetzt etwas reden? Ich kann nur sagen, was Gott mir in den Mund legt.
So Balaam said to Balak, “Behold, I have come now to you! Am I able to speak anything at all? The word that God puts in my mouth, that I shall speak.”
Bileam ging mit Balak weiter nach Kirjat-Huzot.
And Balaam went with Balak, and they came to Kiriath-huzoth.
Balak schlachtete Rinder und Kleinvieh und schickte davon an Bileam und die Hofleute, die bei ihm waren.
Balak sacrificed oxen and sheep, and sent some to Balaam and the leaders who were with him.
