Now Sarah lived one hundred and twenty-seven years; these were the years of the life of Sarah.

Dann ging er zu den Hetitern und bat sie:
Then Abraham rose from before his dead, and spoke to the sons of Heth, saying,
»Ich bin nur ein Fremder bei euch und besitze kein eigenes Land. Überlasst mir ein kleines Grundstück für ein Familiengrab, ich will es euch bezahlen!«
“I am a stranger and a sojourner among you; give me a burial site among you that I may bury my dead out of my sight.”
»du bist ein Mann, vor dem wir Achtung haben, denn Gott ist mit dir, und er hat dich reich und mächtig gemacht. Darum ist es für uns alle eine Ehre, wenn du dir das beste unserer Gräber aussuchst und dort deine Frau beerdigst!«
“Hear us, my lord, you are a mighty prince among us; bury your dead in the choicest of our graves; none of us will refuse you his grave for burying your dead.”
Abraham stand auf und verneigte sich vor ihnen.
So Abraham rose and bowed to the people of the land, the sons of Heth.
»Wenn ihr also damit einverstanden seid«, sagte er, »dann legt bei Efron, dem Sohn Zohars, ein gutes Wort für mich ein,
And he spoke with them, saying, “If it is your wish for me to bury my dead out of my sight, hear me, and approach Ephron the son of Zohar for me,
dass er mir die Höhle von Machpela verkauft, die am Ende seines Grundstücks liegt. Ich bezahle, was er verlangt, damit ich in eurem Land ein Familiengrab besitze.«
that he may give me the cave of Machpelah which he owns, which is at the end of his field; for the full price let him give it to me in your presence for a burial site.”
Efron saß nun gerade unter den Hetitern, die sich beim Stadttor versammelt hatten. Vor allen Anwesenden sagte er zu Abraham:
Now Ephron was sitting among the sons of Heth; and Ephron the Hittite answered Abraham in the hearing of the sons of Heth; even of all who went in at the gate of his city, saying,
»Herr, bitte höre mich an! Ich schenke dir das Grundstück und die Höhle. Alle Anwesenden sind Zeugen: Du brauchst nichts zu bezahlen. Begrabe deine Frau in der Höhle von Machpela!«
“No, my lord, hear me; I give you the field, and I give you the cave that is in it. In the presence of the sons of my people I give it to you; bury your dead.”
Erneut verneigte sich Abraham vor den Hetitern
And Abraham bowed before the people of the land.
und wandte sich dann an Efron: »Ich bitte dich«, sagte er so, dass alle es hören konnten, »lass mich für das Grundstück bezahlen! Nimm das Geld von mir an, dann werde ich dort meine Frau beerdigen!«
He spoke to Ephron in the hearing of the people of the land, saying, “If you will only please listen to me; I will give the price of the field, accept it from me that I may bury my dead there.”
»Mein Herr, das Land ist 400 Silberstücke wert«, antwortete Efron, »aber Geld spielt für uns doch keine Rolle! Du kannst deine Frau dort begraben!«
Then Ephron answered Abraham, saying to him,
Abraham wog die Geldmenge ab, die Efron ihm vor allen Hetitern genannt hatte — 400 Silberstücke nach dem damals üblichen Gewicht.
Abraham listened to Ephron; and Abraham weighed out for Ephron the silver which he had named in the hearing of the sons of Heth, four hundred shekels of silver, commercial standard.
Von da an gehörte ihm das Grundstück bei Machpela, östlich von Mamre, und die Höhle am Ende des Grundstücks sowie alle Bäume, die dort standen. Die anwesenden Männer waren Zeugen dafür, dass das Land rechtmäßig in den Besitz Abrahams überging.
So Ephron’s field, which was in Machpelah, which faced Mamre, the field and cave which was in it, and all the trees which were in the field, that were within all the confines of its border, were deeded over
In dieser Höhle im Land Kanaan begrub er also seine Frau Sara.
After this, Abraham buried Sarah his wife in the cave of the field at Machpelah facing Mamre (that is, Hebron) in the land of Canaan.
