Sanballat, Tobija, der Araber Geschem und unsere übrigen Feinde erfuhren, dass ich die Stadtmauer wieder aufgebaut hatte und dass sie keine Lücken mehr aufwies. Nur die Torflügel hatten wir noch nicht eingesetzt.

When word came to Sanballat, Tobiah, Geshem the Arab and the rest of our enemies that I had rebuilt the wall and not a gap was left in it — though up to that time I had not set the doors in the gates —

Da ließen Sanballat und Geschem mir ausrichten: »Wir wollen uns mit dir in Kefirim in der Ebene von Ono treffen!« Weil sie aber einen Anschlag gegen mich planten,
schickte ich Boten zu ihnen und ließ ihnen sagen: »Ich kann nicht kommen, denn wir führen hier ein großes Werk aus. Die ganze Arbeit müsste unterbrochen werden, wenn ich eurer Aufforderung folgen würde.«
so I sent messengers to them with this reply: “I am carrying on a great project and cannot go down. Why should the work stop while I leave it and go down to you?”
Noch viermal schickten sie mir dieselbe Botschaft, und jedes Mal gab ich ihnen die gleiche Antwort.

Doch Sanballat sandte mir zum fünften Mal einen seiner Männer, diesmal mit einem unverschlossenen Brief.
Then, the fifth time, Sanballat sent his aide to me with the same message, and in his hand was an unsealed letter
Darin stand: »Die anderen Völker des Landes erzählen, dass du mit den Juden einen Aufstand planst und darum die Mauer wieder aufbaust. Auch von Geschem habe ich das gehört. Anscheinend willst du König der Juden werden.
Du sollst sogar schon einige Propheten beauftragt haben, dich in Jerusalem zum König von Juda auszurufen. Von solchen Gerüchten wird natürlich auch der persische König erfahren. Darum lass uns miteinander beraten, was zu tun ist!«
and have even appointed prophets to make this proclamation about you in Jerusalem: ‘There is a king in Judah!’ Now this report will get back to the king; so come, let us meet together.”
Ich ließ ihm ausrichten: »Keine deiner Behauptungen ist wahr. Sie sind alle frei erfunden!«
I sent him this reply: “Nothing like what you are saying is happening; you are just making it up out of your head.”
Unsere Feinde wollten uns Angst einjagen, um die Fertigstellung der Mauer zu verhindern. Doch ich betete: »Herr, gib mir Mut und Kraft!«
They were all trying to frighten us, thinking, “Their hands will get too weak for the work, and it will not be completed.”

Eines Tages besuchte ich Schemaja, den Sohn von Delaja und Enkel von Mehetabel, denn er konnte nicht zu mir kommen. Er sagte zu mir: »Wir müssen uns im inneren Raum des Tempels treffen und die Türen fest verschließen, sie wollen dich nämlich umbringen — noch heute Nacht!«
One day I went to the house of Shemaiah son of Delaiah, the son of Mehetabel, who was shut in at his home. He said, “Let us meet in the house of God, inside the temple, and let us close the temple doors, because men are coming to kill you — by night they are coming to kill you.”
Ich entgegnete: »Ein Mann wie ich läuft nicht davon! Außerdem bin ich kein Priester, ich darf den inneren Raum des Tempels überhaupt nicht betreten, sonst habe ich mein Leben verwirkt. Nein, ich gehe nicht!«
But I said, “Should a man like me run away? Or should someone like me go into the temple to save his life? I will not go!”
Mir war klar geworden, dass Schemaja nicht in Gottes Auftrag sprach. Er tat, als habe er eine Botschaft von Gott empfangen, doch in Wirklichkeit hatten Tobija und Sanballat ihn bestochen.
I realized that God had not sent him, but that he had prophesied against me because Tobiah and Sanballat had hired him.
Sie wollten mir Angst einjagen und mich zu einer Tat verleiten, durch die ich mich schuldig machte. So hätten sie meinen guten Ruf zerstören und mich zur Zielscheibe des Spotts machen können.
He had been hired to intimidate me so that I would commit a sin by doing this, and then they would give me a bad name to discredit me.
Ach, Gott, vergiss nicht, was mir Tobija und Sanballat angetan haben! Denke daran, dass die Prophetin Noadja und die anderen Propheten mich einschüchtern wollten!
Remember Tobiah and Sanballat, my God, because of what they have done; remember also the prophet Noadiah and how she and the rest of the prophets have been trying to intimidate me.
Die Mauer wurde nach 52 Tagen, am 25. Tag des Monats Elul, fertig.
So the wall was completed on the twenty-fifth of Elul, in fifty-two days.
Als unsere Feinde aus den Völkern ringsum das hörten, bekamen sie Angst und verloren allen Mut. Denn sie erkannten, dass unser Gott uns geholfen hatte.

Während dieser ganzen Zeit hatten einige einflussreiche Männer aus Juda ständig an Tobija geschrieben und auch Briefe von ihm erhalten.
Also, in those days the nobles of Judah were sending many letters to Tobiah, and replies from Tobiah kept coming to them.
Viele Judäer hatten ihm Beistand geschworen, denn er war der Schwiegersohn von Schechanja, dem Sohn von Arach, und sein Sohn Johanan war mit einer Tochter von Meschullam, dem Sohn von Berechja, verheiratet.
For many in Judah were under oath to him, since he was son-in-law to Shekaniah son of Arah, and his son Jehohanan had married the daughter of Meshullam son of Berekiah.
