Der Herr sagt: »Wehe dir, Ariël, du Stadt, in der auf meinem Altar die Opfer verbrannt werden! Ja, es wird dir schlecht ergehen, Jerusalem, du Stadt, in der sich einst David niederließ! Macht nur weiter so! Feiert ruhig Jahr für Jahr eure Feste!
Doch ich werde Jerusalem in so schwere Bedrängnis bringen, dass die Stadt von lautem Klagen und Stöhnen widerhallt. Dann mache ich sie zu dem, was ihr Name bedeutet: Ariël, ein Altar voller Glut.

Dann liegt sie am Boden, die stolze Stadt. Dumpf klingen eure Worte, als ob sie aus der Erde kämen. Wie die Stimme eines Geistes aus der Unterwelt, so klingt euer Wispern aus dem Staub.

Euren Feinden geht es dann wie einem Verhungernden, der vom Essen träumt, doch wenn er erwacht, ist er hungrig wie zuvor; oder wie einem, der verdurstet und vom Wasser träumt, doch wenn er erwacht, ist er immer noch ausgedörrt und schwach vor Durst. Ja, so geht es den vielen Völkern, die gegen den Berg Zion zu Felde ziehen!«

Starrt einander nur an, bis ihr vor Entsetzen erstarrt! Verschließt nur weiter eure Augen, bis ihr wirklich blind seid! Ihr wankt, doch nicht weil ihr vom Wein berauscht seid; ihr torkelt, aber nicht weil ihr zu viel getrunken habt.

Der HERR hat einen Geist über euch kommen lassen, der euch in tiefen Schlaf versetzt hat. Ja, eure Augen, die Propheten, hat er verschlossen und eure Köpfe, die Seher, verhüllt.

Wehe euch, die ihr eure Pläne vor dem HERRN verbergen wollt. Ihr wickelt eure Geschäfte im Schutze der Dunkelheit ab und denkt: »Uns sieht niemand; keiner merkt, was wir treiben!«

Bald schon wird das wilde Bergland des Libanon in einen üppigen Obstgarten verwandelt, dicht bewachsen wie ein Wald.
