Der HERR sprach zu Jeremia während der großen Dürre:

»Das Land Juda trauert, seine Städte leiden Not, verzweifelt sitzen die Menschen auf der Erde, und in Jerusalem hört man lautes Klagen.
“Judah mourns,
her cities languish;
they wail for the land,
and a cry goes up from Jerusalem.

Die Reichen schicken ihre Diener los, um Wasser zu holen. Sie gehen zu den Zisternen, aber alle sind ausgetrocknet. Mit leeren Krügen kehren sie zurück, enttäuscht und traurig verhüllen sie ihr Gesicht.

Du bist Israels einzige Hoffnung, sein Retter in Zeiten der Not. Warum verhältst du dich wie ein Fremder bei uns im Land, wie ein Wanderer, der nur für eine Nacht bleibt?

Warum bist du wie ein Kriegsheld, der überwältigt wurde und niemandem mehr helfen kann? Du wohnst doch mitten unter uns! Wir tragen deinen Namen. HERR, verlass uns nicht!

Aber der HERR antwortete mir: »Dieses Volk liebt es, mir davonzulaufen, sie wollen einfach nicht bei mir bleiben. Darum finde ich kein Gefallen mehr an ihnen, ich verschone sie nicht mehr, sondern ziehe sie für ihre Sünden zur Rechenschaft.«

“They greatly love to wander;
they do not restrain their feet.
So the Lord does not accept them;
he will now remember their wickedness
and punish them for their sins.”

Und weiter sprach der HERR zu mir: »Jeremia, bete nicht mehr für das Wohl dieses Volkes!
Then the Lord said to me, “Do not pray for the well-being of this people.
Wenn sie auch fasten und mich um Gnade anflehen, werde ich sie doch nicht erhören. Wenn sie mir Brand- und Speiseopfer bringen, nehme ich ihre Opfer nicht an; nein, ich werde sie auslöschen durch Kriege, Hungersnot und Seuchen.«
Although they fast, I will not listen to their cry; though they offer burnt offerings and grain offerings, I will not accept them. Instead, I will destroy them with the sword, famine and plague.”
»Aber HERR, mein Gott«, erwiderte ich, »die Propheten sind schuld! Sie reden ihnen ein: ›Ihr werdet keinen Krieg und keine Hungersnot erleben. Gott wird unserem Land bleibenden Frieden geben.‹«
But I said, “Alas, Sovereign Lord! The prophets keep telling them, ‘You will not see the sword or suffer famine. Indeed, I will give you lasting peace in this place.’ ”
Doch der HERR sprach zu mir: »Was diese Propheten in meinem Namen verkünden, ist nichts als Lüge! Ich habe sie weder beauftragt noch gesandt, kein Wort habe ich mit ihnen geredet! Erlogene Visionen geben sie euch weiter, trügerische Wahrsagerei und ihre eigenen Hirngespinste.
Das sage ich, der HERR, über diese Propheten, die in meinem Namen auftreten: Ich habe sie nicht gesandt, und doch behaupten sie: ›Weder Krieg noch Hungersnot wird dieses Land je treffen!‹ Genau diese Propheten werden im Krieg umkommen oder vor Hunger sterben!
Therefore this is what the Lord says about the prophets who are prophesying in my name: I did not send them, yet they are saying, ‘No sword or famine will touch this land.’ Those same prophets will perish by sword and famine.
Und die Menschen, denen sie geweissagt haben, werden auf den Straßen von Jerusalem liegen, verhungert oder vom Schwert durchbohrt: Männer, Frauen und Kinder, niemand wird sie begraben. Ihre Bosheit werde ich ihnen reichlich vergelten.«
And the people they are prophesying to will be thrown out into the streets of Jerusalem because of the famine and sword. There will be no one to bury them, their wives, their sons and their daughters. I will pour out on them the calamity they deserve.
Der Herr befahl mir: »Verheimliche ihnen deine Trauer nicht! Sag ihnen: ›Ich weine hemmungslos, meine Tränen fließen Tag und Nacht. Denn mein geliebtes Volk ist schwer verwundet, zerschlagen liegt es am Boden.
“Speak this word to them:
“ ‘Let my eyes overflow with tears
night and day without ceasing;
for the Virgin Daughter, my people,
has suffered a grievous wound,
a crushing blow.

Wenn ich hinaus aufs Land gehe, sehe ich die Leichen daliegen — vom Schwert durchbohrt; gehe ich zurück in die Stadt, sehe ich verhungernde Menschen. Die Priester und Propheten werden in ein Land verschleppt, das sie nicht einmal kennen.‹«

O Gott, hast du Juda denn ganz und gar aufgegeben? Verabscheust du Jerusalem, die Stadt auf dem Berg Zion? Warum hast du uns so verwundet, dass wir nicht mehr gesund werden? Wir hofften, alles werde wieder gut — doch vergeblich! Wir dachten, die Wunden unseres Volkes würden heilen — aber wir erleben nichts als Schrecken!

HERR, gegen dich haben wir gesündigt, wir bekennen dir unsere Schuld und die Schuld unserer Vorfahren.
We acknowledge our wickedness, Lord,
and the guilt of our ancestors;
we have indeed sinned against you.

Bitte verstoß uns jetzt nicht, es geht doch um deine Ehre! Gib den Tempel, deinen herrlichen Thron, nicht dem Gespött preis! Denk an den Bund, den du mit uns geschlossen hast, und heb ihn nicht auf!

Kein Götze der Heiden kann uns helfen, keiner kann Regen bringen, und auch der Himmel gibt den Regen nicht von selbst. Nein, du bist es, HERR, unser Gott! Du hast alles geschaffen. Darum hoffen wir auf dich!
