Balak Sends for Balaam

Then the children of Israel moved, and camped in the plains of Moab on the side of the Jordan across from Jericho.

Die Moabiter und ihr König Balak, der Sohn von Zippor, hörten, wie die Israeliten die Amoriter vernichtet hatten. Da packte sie die Angst vor dem gewaltigen Heer der Israeliten. Sie berieten sich mit den führenden Männern von Midian und sagten zu ihnen: »Bald werden diese Horden auch unsere Ländereien abfressen, wie das Vieh die Weiden abgrast.«

Now Balak the son of Zippor saw all that Israel had done to the Amorites.

Balak sandte Boten nach Petor, einer Stadt am Euphrat in seinem Heimatland. Von dort sollten sie Bileam, den Sohn von Beor, zu Hilfe holen. Balak ließ ihm ausrichten: »Ein Volk ist aus Ägypten gekommen und hat sich in unserer Gegend breitgemacht. Sein Heer steht an unserer Grenze und bedroht uns.

Then he sent messengers to Balaam the son of Beor at Pethor, which is near [b]the River in the land of [c]the sons of his people, to call him, saying: “Look, a people has come from Egypt. See, they cover the face of the earth, and are settling next to me!

Wir sind ihm völlig unterlegen. Deshalb brauchen wir deine Hilfe. Komm doch und verfluche dieses Volk! Denn wir wissen: Wenn du jemanden segnest, dann gelingt ihm alles, und wenn du jemanden verfluchst, dann ist er verloren. Mit deiner Hilfe können wir sie vielleicht besiegen und aus dem Land vertreiben.«

Therefore please come at once, curse this people for me, for they are too mighty for me. Perhaps I shall be able to defeat them and drive them out of the land, for I know that he whom you bless is blessed, and he whom you curse is cursed.”

Die führenden Männer der Moabiter und Midianiter zogen also zu Bileam, und sie brachten seinen Lohn gleich mit. Als sie ihm Balaks Botschaft ausgerichtet hatten,

So the elders of Moab and the elders of Midian departed with the diviner’s fee in their hand, and they came to Balaam and spoke to him the words of Balak.

antwortete Bileam: »Bleibt heute Nacht hier. Morgen werde ich euch mitteilen, was der HERR mir sagt.« Da blieben die Fürsten aus Moab bis zum nächsten Tag in Petor.

And he said to them, “Lodge here tonight, and I will bring back word to you, as the Lord speaks to me.” So the princes of Moab stayed with Balaam.

In der Nacht erschien Gott Bileam und fragte: »Was sind das für Männer bei dir?«

Then God came to Balaam and said, “Who are these men with you?”

Bileam erwiderte: »Sie kommen vom moabitischen König Balak, dem Sohn von Zippor.

So Balaam said to God, “Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab, has sent to me, saying,

Ein Volk aus Ägypten ist bei ihnen eingefallen und hat das ganze Land besetzt. Nun soll ich hingehen und diese Leute verfluchen. Balak hofft, dass er sie dann besiegen und vertreiben kann.«

‘Look, a people has come out of Egypt, and they cover the face of the earth. Come now, curse them for me; perhaps I shall be able to overpower them and drive them out.’ ”

Gott befahl Bileam: »Geh nicht mit! Verfluche dieses Volk nicht, denn ich habe es gesegnet!«

And God said to Balaam, “You shall not go with them; you shall not curse the people, for they are blessed.”

Am Morgen stand Bileam auf und sagte zu den Abgesandten Balaks: »Ihr müsst allein in euer Land zurückkehren. Der HERR erlaubt mir nicht, mit euch zu gehen.«

So Balaam rose in the morning and said to the princes of Balak, “Go back to your land, for the Lord has refused to give me permission to go with you.”

So brachen die führenden Männer der Moabiter ohne ihn auf und trafen unverrichteter Dinge wieder bei Balak ein. Sie erklärten ihm: »Bileam weigerte sich mitzukommen.«

And the princes of Moab rose and went to Balak, and said, “Balaam refuses to come with us.”

Da sandte Balak wieder Boten nach Petor, diesmal noch mehr und noch bedeutendere Männer.

Then Balak again sent princes, more numerous and more [d]honorable than they.

Sie reisten zu Bileam und sagten zu ihm: »Balak, der Sohn von Zippor, bittet dich: Lass dich nicht abhalten, zu mir zu kommen.

And they came to Balaam and said to him, “Thus says Balak the son of Zippor: ‘Please let nothing hinder you from coming to me;

Ich werde dich reich belohnen und alles tun, was du willst. Komm doch und verfluche dieses Volk für mich!«

for I will certainly honor you greatly, and I will do whatever you say to me. Therefore please come, curse this people for me.’ ”

Bileam erwiderte: »Selbst wenn Balak mir seinen Palast voll Gold und Silber gibt, kann ich nichts tun, was der HERR, mein Gott, mir verbietet, ganz gleich, wie wichtig oder unwichtig es ist.

Then Balaam answered and said to the servants of Balak, “Though Balak were to give me his house full of silver and gold, I could not go beyond the word of the Lord my God, to do less or more.

Doch bleibt auch ihr über Nacht hier. Ich will sehen, ob der HERR noch einmal zu mir spricht.«

Now therefore, please, you also stay here tonight, that I may know what more the Lord will say to me.”

In der Nacht erschien Gott Bileam wieder und forderte ihn auf: »Geh mit den Männern, die dich holen wollen! Aber tu nur das, was ich dir sage.«

And God came to Balaam at night and said to him, “If the men come to call you, rise and go with them; but only the word which I speak to you — that you shall do.”

Am Morgen stand Bileam auf, sattelte seine Eselin und zog mit den moabitischen Fürsten los.

So Balaam rose in the morning, saddled his donkey, and went with the princes of Moab.

Zwei Diener begleiteten ihn. Gott aber war zornig, dass Bileam mitging, und der Engel des HERRN stellte sich ihm in den Weg, um ihn aufzuhalten.

Balaam, the Donkey, and the Angel

Then God’s anger was aroused because he went, and the Angel of the Lord took His stand in the way as an adversary against him. And he was riding on his donkey, and his two servants were with him.

Die Eselin sah den Engel, der mit dem Schwert in der Hand mitten auf der Straße stand. Sie brach zur Seite aus und lief ins Feld. Bileam schlug sie, um sie wieder auf den Weg zurückzubringen.

Now the donkey saw the Angel of the Lord standing in the way with His drawn sword in His hand, and the donkey turned aside out of the way and went into the field. So Balaam struck the donkey to turn her back onto the road.

Nun stellte sich der Engel des HERRN auf einen engen Weg, der zwischen Weinbergen hindurchführte. Die Straße war hier von Mauern eingefasst.

Then the Angel of the Lord stood in a narrow path between the vineyards, with a wall on this side and a wall on that side.

Wieder sah die Eselin den Engel und drängte sich ganz an die Seite, so dass Bileams Bein an die Mauer gedrückt wurde. Wieder schlug er sie.

And when the donkey saw the Angel of the Lord, she pushed herself against the wall and crushed Balaam’s foot against the wall; so he struck her again.

Der Engel des HERRN ging nochmals ein Stück weiter und versperrte Bileam nun an einer anderen Stelle den Weg, die so eng war, dass man weder rechts noch links vorbeikommen konnte.

Then the Angel of the Lord went further, and stood in a narrow place where there was no way to turn either to the right hand or to the left.

Als die Eselin den Engel sah, legte sie sich auf den Boden. Bileam wurde wütend und schlug sie mit seinem Stock.

And when the donkey saw the Angel of the Lord, she lay down under Balaam; so Balaam’s anger was aroused, and he struck the donkey with his staff.

Da ließ der HERR das Tier sprechen. Es sagte zu Bileam: »Was habe ich dir getan? Warum hast du mich jetzt schon zum dritten Mal geschlagen?«

Then the Lord opened the mouth of the donkey, and she said to Balaam, “What have I done to you, that you have struck me these three times?”

Bileam schrie: »Weil du mich zum Narren hältst! Hätte ich nur ein Schwert zur Hand, ich würde dich töten!«

And Balaam said to the donkey, “Because you have [e]abused me. I wish there were a sword in my hand, for now I would kill you!”

Das Tier erwiderte: »Bin ich nicht deine Eselin, auf der du schon immer geritten bist? Habe ich jemals so etwas getan wie heute?« Bileam sagte: »Nein.«

So the donkey said to Balaam, “Am I not your donkey on which you have ridden, ever since I became yours, to this day? Was I ever [f]disposed to do this to you?”
And he said, “No.”

Da öffnete der HERR ihm die Augen, und er sah den Engel mit dem Schwert in der Hand auf dem Weg stehen. Bileam verneigte sich vor ihm bis zum Boden.

Then the Lord opened Balaam’s eyes, and he saw the Angel of the Lord standing in the way with His drawn sword in His hand; and he bowed his head and fell flat on his face.

Der Engel des HERRN sprach: »Warum hast du deine Eselin dreimal geschlagen? Ich war es, der sich dir entgegengestellt hat, weil du auf einem verkehrten Weg bist.

And the Angel of the Lord said to him, “Why have you struck your donkey these three times? Behold, I have come out [g]to stand against you, because your way is perverse[h] before Me.

Deine Eselin hat mich gesehen und ist mir dreimal ausgewichen. Hätte sie es nicht getan, dann hätte ich dich mit dem Schwert getötet und sie am Leben gelassen.«

The donkey saw Me and turned aside from Me these three times. If she had not turned aside from Me, surely I would also have killed you by now, and let her live.”

Da sagte Bileam zum Engel des HERRN: »Ich habe Schuld auf mich geladen. Ich wusste nicht, dass du mir den Weg versperrt hast. Wenn du gegen diese Reise nach Moab bist, kehre ich sofort um.«

And Balaam said to the Angel of the Lord, “I have sinned, for I did not know You stood in the way against me. Now therefore, if it [i]displeases You, I will turn back.”

Doch der Engel des HERRN erwiderte: »Geh mit den Männern! Aber sag nur das, was ich dir auftrage!« So zog Bileam mit den Abgesandten Balaks weiter.

Then the Angel of the Lord said to Balaam, “Go with the men, but only the word that I speak to you, that you shall speak.” So Balaam went with the princes of Balak.

Als Balak von Bileams Kommen erfuhr, ging er ihm bis zur Grenze Moabs entgegen und traf ihn in der Stadt Ar am Fluss Arnon.

Now when Balak heard that Balaam was coming, he went out to meet him at the city of Moab, which is on the border at the Arnon, the boundary of the territory.

Balak machte Bileam Vorwürfe: »Warum bist du nicht sofort gekommen? Habe ich dir nicht gesagt, dass ich dich dringend brauche? Du meinst wohl, ich kann dich nicht angemessen belohnen?«

Then Balak said to Balaam, “Did I not earnestly send to you, calling for you? Why did you not come to me? Am I not able to honor you?”

Bileam entgegnete: »Nun bin ich ja hier. Aber ich kann nicht einfach sagen, was ich will, sondern nur, was Gott mir eingibt.«

And Balaam said to Balak, “Look, I have come to you! Now, have I any power at all to say anything? The word that God puts in my mouth, that I must speak.”

Danach zogen Balak und Bileam nach Kirjat-Huzot.

So Balaam went with Balak, and they came to Kirjath Huzoth.

Dort opferte der König Rinder, Schafe und Ziegen, und mit einem Teil des Fleisches ließ er Bileam und die führenden Männer der Moabiter bewirten.

Then Balak offered oxen and sheep, and he sent some to Balaam and to the princes who were with him.

Am nächsten Morgen führte Balak Bileam hinauf nach Bamot-Baal. Von hier aus konnte man den Rand des israelitischen Lagers sehen.

Balaam’s First Prophecy

So it was, the next day, that Balak took Balaam and brought him up to the high places of Baal, that from there he might observe [j]the extent of the people.
