Hört, ihr Israeliten! Ihr werdet jetzt den Jordan überqueren und das Land auf der anderen Seite in Besitz nehmen. Ihr werdet Völker von dort vertreiben, die größer und mächtiger sind als ihr. Sie wohnen in gewaltigen Festungen mit himmelhohen Mauern.
Victory by God’s Grace
“Listen, O Israel! Today you are about to cross the Jordan River to take over the land belonging to nations much greater and more powerful than you. They live in cities with walls that reach to the sky!

Unter ihnen ist auch ein mächtiges Volk von hochgewachsenen Menschen, die Anakiter. Ihr wisst, dass man sagt: »Anakiter sind unbesiegbar!«
The people are strong and tall — descendants of the famous Anakite giants. You’ve heard the saying, ‘Who can stand up to the Anakites?’
Aber ihr werdet sehen, dass der HERR, euer Gott, vor euch herzieht und wie ein Feuer alles zerstört. Er besiegt diese Völker und gibt sie in eure Gewalt. Mit seiner Hilfe könnt ihr sie schnell vertreiben und vernichten. So hat er es euch versprochen.
But recognize today that the LORD your God is the one who will cross over ahead of you like a devouring fire to destroy them. He will subdue them so that you will quickly conquer them and drive them out, just as the LORD has promised.
Wenn der HERR, euer Gott, dies für euch tut, dann denkt nicht: »Wir bekommen dieses Land, weil wir so leben, wie es dem HERRN gefällt.« Nein, er vertreibt diese Völker, weil sie von ihm nichts wissen wollen.
“After the LORD your God has done this for you, don’t say in your hearts, ‘The LORD has given us this land because we are such good people!’ No, it is because of the wickedness of the other nations that he is pushing them out of your way.
Nicht wegen eurer Vollkommenheit und Aufrichtigkeit kommt ihr hinein! Die Bewohner von Kanaan müssen euch weichen, weil sie gottlos sind und weil der HERR ihr Land euren Vorfahren Abraham, Isaak und Jakob mit einem Eid versprochen hat.
It is not because you are so good or have such integrity that you are about to occupy their land. The LORD your God will drive these nations out ahead of you only because of their wickedness, and to fulfill the oath he swore to your ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
Begreift doch: Ihr habt dieses gute Land nicht verdient! Im Gegenteil, ihr seid ein widerspenstiges Volk.
You must recognize that the LORD your God is not giving you this good land because you are good, for you are not — you are a stubborn people.
Denkt nur daran und vergesst nie, wie ihr in der Wüste den Zorn des HERRN, eures Gottes, herausgefordert habt. Auf dem ganzen Weg von Ägypten bis hierher habt ihr euch gegen ihn aufgelehnt.
Remembering the Gold Calf
“Remember and never forget how angry you made the LORD your God out in the wilderness. From the day you left Egypt until now, you have been constantly rebelling against him.
Am Berg Horeb habt ihr den HERRN so zornig gemacht, dass er euch vernichten wollte.
Ich war gerade auf den Berg gestiegen, um dort vom HERRN die Steintafeln mit den Geboten des Bundes zu empfangen, den er mit euch geschlossen hatte. Vierzig Tage und Nächte blieb ich oben, ohne etwas zu essen und zu trinken.
This happened when I was on the mountain receiving the tablets of stone inscribed with the words of the covenant that the LORD had made with you. I was there for forty days and forty nights, and all that time I ate no food and drank no water.
Danach übergab der HERR mir die beiden Tafeln. Er selbst hatte die Worte darauf geschrieben, die er aus dem Feuer zu euch gesprochen hatte, als ihr am Fuß des Berges versammelt wart.
The LORD gave me the two tablets on which God had written with his own finger all the words he had spoken to you from the heart of the fire when you were assembled at the mountain.
Er sagte zu mir: »Steig schnell hinab, denn dein Volk, das du aus Ägypten herausgeführt hast, hat große Schuld auf sich geladen. Wie schnell haben sie sich von meinen Geboten abgewandt! Sie haben sich eine Götzenfigur aus Metall gegossen!
Then the LORD said to me, ‘Get up! Go down immediately, for the people you brought out of Egypt have corrupted themselves. How quickly they have turned away from the way I commanded them to live! They have melted gold and made an idol for themselves!’
Ich habe mir dieses Volk lange genug angesehen und weiß, dass sie sich immer wieder gegen mich auflehnen.
“The LORD also said to me, ‘I have seen how stubborn and rebellious these people are.
Versuch nicht, mich aufzuhalten, denn ich will sie vernichten und jede Spur von ihnen auslöschen. Deine Nachkommen aber werde ich zu einem Volk machen, das noch größer und mächtiger ist als sie.«
Leave me alone so I may destroy them and erase their name from under heaven. Then I will make a mighty nation of your descendants, a nation larger and more powerful than they are.’
Da wandte ich mich um und stieg vom Berg herab, der immer noch in Flammen stand. In meinen Händen hielt ich die beiden Steintafeln mit den Geboten des Bundes.
“So while the mountain was blazing with fire I turned and came down, holding in my hands the two stone tablets inscribed with the terms of the covenant.
Ich erkannte sofort, dass ihr am HERRN, eurem Gott, schuldig geworden wart: Ihr hattet euch ein goldenes Kalb gegossen. So schnell hattet ihr euch vom HERRN und seinen Geboten abgewandt!
There below me I could see that you had sinned against the LORD your God. You had melted gold and made a calf idol for yourselves. How quickly you had turned away from the path the LORD had commanded you to follow!
Da schleuderte ich die beiden Steintafeln zu Boden und zerschmetterte sie vor euren Augen.
So I took the stone tablets and threw them to the ground, smashing them before your eyes.
Ich warf mich vor dem HERRN nieder und betete noch einmal vierzig Tage und Nächte lang, ohne zu essen und zu trinken. Denn ihr hattet große Schuld auf euch geladen und getan, was dem HERRN missfiel. Nun war er so zornig auf euch, dass ich fürchtete, er würde euch vernichten. Aber auch diesmal erhörte er mich.
“Then, as before, I threw myself down before the LORD for forty days and nights. I ate no bread and drank no water because of the great sin you had committed by doing what the LORD hated, provoking him to anger.
Ich betete auch für Aaron, denn der HERR war voller Zorn über ihn und wollte ihn töten.
The LORD was so angry with Aaron that he wanted to destroy him, too. But I prayed for Aaron, and the LORD spared him.
Das Kalb, dieses abscheuliche Zeichen eurer Sünde, das ihr euch angefertigt hattet, schmolz ich ein. Ich zerrieb und zermalmte es zu Staub und streute ihn in den Bach, der vom Berg herabfließt.
I took your sin — the calf you had made — and I melted it down in the fire and ground it into fine dust. Then I threw the dust into the stream that flows down the mountain.
Auch in Tabera, in Massa und in Kibrot-Taawa habt ihr den Zorn des HERRN herausgefordert,
ebenso in Kadesch-Barnea. Dort hatte der HERR euch befohlen: »Zieht los und nehmt das Land ein, das ich euch geben will!« Ihr aber wolltet seinem Befehl nicht folgen. Ihr habt ihm nicht vertraut und nicht auf ihn gehört.
And at Kadesh-barnea the LORD sent you out with this command: ‘Go up and take over the land I have given you.’ But you rebelled against the command of the LORD your God and refused to put your trust in him or obey him.
Seit ich euch kenne, lehnt ihr euch gegen den HERRN auf!
Yes, you have been rebelling against the LORD as long as I have known you.
Am Berg Horeb warf ich mich vor dem HERRN auf den Boden und betete vierzig Tage und Nächte lang für euch. Denn er hatte angedroht, euch zu vernichten.
“That is why I threw myself down before the LORD for forty days and nights — for the LORD said he would destroy you.
Ich flehte ihn an: »HERR, mein Gott, bitte bring dein Volk nicht um! Es gehört doch dir! Du hast es durch deine Macht erlöst, mit starker Hand hast du es aus Ägypten herausgeführt.
I prayed to the LORD and said, ‘O Sovereign LORD, do not destroy them. They are your own people. They are your special possession, whom you redeemed from Egypt by your mighty power and your strong hand.
Denk an Abraham, Isaak und Jakob, die dir gedient haben! Rechne diesem Volk seine Widerspenstigkeit und seine Gottlosigkeit nicht an, mit der sie so große Schuld auf sich geladen haben!
Please overlook the stubbornness and the awful sin of these people, and remember instead your servants Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
Sonst werden die Ägypter behaupten: ›Der HERR konnte sie nicht in das Land bringen, das er ihnen versprochen hat. Vielleicht hat er sie auch nur aus unserem Land herausgeholt, weil er sie hasste und in der Wüste töten wollte.‹
If you destroy these people, the Egyptians will say, “The Israelites died because the LORD wasn’t able to bring them to the land he had promised to give them.” Or they might say, “He destroyed them because he hated them; he deliberately took them into the wilderness to slaughter them.”
