Ein Israelit verstieß gegen das Verbot, sich etwas von den Reichtümern Jerichos anzueignen: Achan, der Sohn von Karmi. Er war ein Nachkomme von Sabdi und Serach aus dem Stamm Juda. Achan nahm etwas von dem mit, was vernichtet werden sollte. Darum wurde der HERR sehr zornig über die Israeliten.
Israel Is Defeated at Ai
But the sons of Israel acted unfaithfully in regard to the things under the ban, for Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, from the tribe of Judah, took some of the things under the ban, therefore the anger of the LORD burned against the sons of Israel.

Josua sandte von Jericho aus einige Männer zur Stadt Ai, die bei Bet-Awen östlich von Bethel liegt. »Geht hin«, sagte er, »und erkundet die Gegend.« Die Männer führten den Auftrag aus.
Now Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai, which is near Beth-aven, east of Bethel, and said to them, “Go up and spy out the land.” So the men went up and spied out Ai.
Als sie wieder zurückgekehrt waren, erstatteten sie Josua Bericht und rieten: »Lass nicht das ganze Heer gegen die Stadt ziehen. Zwei- oder dreitausend Mann reichen völlig aus, um Ai zu erobern. Es hat nur wenige Einwohner. Du brauchst nicht alle Soldaten einzusetzen.«
They returned to Joshua and said to him, “Do not let all the people go up; only about two or three thousand men need go up to Ai; do not make all the people toil up there, for they are few.”
Josua folgte ihrem Rat und sandte dreitausend Mann los, um Ai einzunehmen. Doch sie wurden in die Flucht geschlagen.
So about three thousand men from the people went up there, but they fled from the men of Ai.
Die Männer von Ai verfolgten die Israeliten von der Stadt bis zum Abhang von Schebarim und töteten dort 36 Soldaten. Da packte die Israeliten die Angst.
The men of Ai struck down about thirty-six of their men, and pursued them from the gate as far as Shebarim and struck them down on the descent, so the hearts of the people melted and became as water.
Josua zerriss entsetzt sein Gewand und warf sich mit den führenden Männern des Volkes vor der Bundeslade zu Boden. Voller Verzweiflung streuten sie sich Erde auf den Kopf und blieben bis zum Abend so liegen.
Then Joshua tore his clothes and fell to the earth on his face before the ark of the LORD until the evening, both he and the elders of Israel; and they put dust on their heads.
Dann betete Josua: »Ach, HERR, warum hast du uns bloß über den Jordan geführt? Etwa damit uns die Amoriter besiegen und umbringen? Wären wir doch geblieben, wo wir waren!
Joshua said, “Alas, O Lord GOD, why did You ever bring this people over the Jordan, only to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, to destroy us? If only we had been willing to dwell beyond the Jordan!
Ich frage dich, Herr: Was kann ich jetzt noch sagen, nachdem Israel vor seinen Feinden fliehen musste?
“O Lord, what can I say since Israel has turned their back before their enemies?
Die Kanaaniter und alle anderen Völker dieses Landes werden davon hören. Sie werden uns umbringen und jede Spur von uns für immer auslöschen. Wie willst du deine Ehre dann noch retten?«
“For the Canaanites and all the inhabitants of the land will hear of it, and they will surround us and cut off our name from the earth. And what will You do for Your great name?”
Der HERR antwortete: »Steh auf! Warum liegst du hier am Boden?
So the LORD said to Joshua, “Rise up! Why is it that you have fallen on your face?
Die Israeliten haben Schuld auf sich geladen und den Bund verletzt, den ich mit ihnen schloss. Sie haben etwas von dem an sich genommen, was ich zur Vernichtung bestimmt habe. Sie haben es gestohlen und heimlich bei sich versteckt.
“Israel has sinned, and they have also transgressed My covenant which I commanded them. And they have even taken some of the things under the ban and have both stolen and deceived. Moreover, they have also put them among their own things.
Deshalb seid ihr euren Feinden unterlegen und müsst vor ihnen fliehen. Ihr selbst seid jetzt dem Untergang geweiht! Ich werde euch nicht mehr helfen, wenn ihr nicht das aus eurem Volk beseitigt, worüber ich mein Urteil verhängt habe.
“Therefore the sons of Israel cannot stand before their enemies; they turn their backs before their enemies, for they have become accursed. I will not be with you anymore unless you destroy the things under the ban from your midst.
Steh jetzt auf und sprich zum Volk! Sag ihnen: ›Unter euch befindet sich etwas, worüber Gott sein Urteil gesprochen hat und was allein ihm gehört. Ihr werdet euren Feinden so lange unterlegen sein, bis ihr es entfernt habt. Der HERR, der Gott Israels, befiehlt, dass ihr euch reinigt und darauf vorbereitet, ihm morgen früh zu begegnen!
“Rise up! Consecrate the people and say, ‘Consecrate yourselves for tomorrow, for thus the LORD, the God of Israel, has said, “There are things under the ban in your midst, O Israel. You cannot stand before your enemies until you have removed the things under the ban from your midst.”
Dann sollt ihr euch nach euren Stammesverbänden geordnet versammeln. Der HERR wird uns den Schuldigen zeigen: Wir werden das Los werfen, und der Stamm, den es trifft, soll vortreten. Dann entscheidet das Los zwischen den Sippen dieses Stammes. Ist die Sippe gefunden, wird in ihr die Familie durch das Los ermittelt. Diese Familie, die der HERR uns zeigen wird, soll dann vortreten, Mann für Mann.
‘In the morning then you shall come near by your tribes. And it shall be that the tribe which the LORD takes by lot shall come near by families, and the family which the LORD takes shall come near by households, and the household which the LORD takes shall come near man by man.
Derjenige, bei dem man etwas findet, das Gott gehört, muss verbrannt werden, zusammen mit seiner Familie und seinem Besitz. Denn er hat den Bund mit dem HERRN gebrochen und durch seine abscheuliche Tat Schande über Israel gebracht.‹«
‘It shall be that the one who is taken with the things under the ban shall be burned with fire, he and all that belongs to him, because he has transgressed the covenant of the LORD, and because he has committed a disgraceful thing in Israel.’”
Früh am nächsten Morgen ließ Josua das Volk nach Stammesverbänden geordnet zu sich kommen. Das Los wurde geworfen und traf den Stamm Juda.
The Sin of Achan
So Joshua arose early in the morning and brought Israel near by tribes, and the tribe of Judah was taken.
Er musste vortreten. Aus diesem Stamm wurde die Sippe Serach ermittelt, und in ihr fiel das Los auf die Familie von Sabdi.
He brought the family of Judah near, and he took the family of the Zerahites; and he brought the family of the Zerahites near man by man, and Zabdi was taken.
Unter dessen Angehörigen traf es schließlich Achan, den Sohn von Karmi und Nachkommen von Sabdi und Serach.
He brought his household near man by man; and Achan, son of Carmi, son of Zabdi, son of Zerah, from the tribe of Judah, was taken.
Josua sagte zu ihm: »Mein Sohn, beug dich vor dem HERRN, dem Gott Israels. Zeig, dass du ihn achtest, und gestehe, was du getan hast; verschweig mir nichts!«
Then Joshua said to Achan, “My son, I implore you, give glory to the LORD, the God of Israel, and give praise to Him; and tell me now what you have done. Do not hide it from me.”
Achan antwortete: »Es ist wahr, ich bin es gewesen, ich habe das Gebot des HERRN, des Gottes Israels, verletzt.
So Achan answered Joshua and said, “Truly, I have sinned against the LORD, the God of Israel, and this is what I did:
Unter der Beute sah ich einen wertvollen Mantel aus Babylonien, fast zweieinhalb Kilo Silber und einen Goldbarren, über ein Pfund schwer. Ich konnte einfach nicht widerstehen und nahm es mit. Ich habe alles im Boden meines Zeltes vergraben, das Silber zuunterst.«
when I saw among the spoil a beautiful mantle from Shinar and two hundred shekels of silver and a bar of gold fifty shekels in weight, then I coveted them and took them; and behold, they are concealed in the earth inside my tent with the silver underneath it.”
Josua schickte einige Männer zu Achans Zelt. Sie fanden das Gestohlene tatsächlich dort vergraben, das Silber zuunterst, genau wie Achan es beschrieben hatte.
So Joshua sent messengers, and they ran to the tent; and behold, it was concealed in his tent with the silver underneath it.
Sie holten alles heraus und brachten es dahin, wo Josua und das Volk warteten. Dort legten sie es vor der Bundeslade auf die Erde.
They took them from inside the tent and brought them to Joshua and to all the sons of Israel, and they poured them out before the LORD.
Josua nahm Achan von der Sippe Serach samt seinen Söhnen und Töchtern gefangen und ließ seine Rinder und Esel, seine Schafe und Ziegen, sein Zelt und seine gesamte Habe herbeiholen. Begleitet vom ganzen Volk, brachte er Achan, seine Kinder, seinen ganzen Besitz und das gestohlene Gut ins Achor-Tal.
Then Joshua and all Israel with him, took Achan the son of Zerah, the silver, the mantle, the bar of gold, his sons, his daughters, his oxen, his donkeys, his sheep, his tent and all that belonged to him; and they brought them up to the valley of Achor.
Dort sagte Josua zu ihm: »Du hast Israel ins Unglück gestürzt! Darum stürzt der HERR heute dich ins Unglück!« Das ganze Volk steinigte Achan und seine Familie, und anschließend wurden sie mit ihrem ganzen Besitz verbrannt.
Joshua said, “Why have you troubled us? The LORD will trouble you this day.” And all Israel stoned them with stones; and they burned them with fire after they had stoned them with stones.
Man begrub sie unter einem großen Steinhaufen, der sich noch immer dort befindet. Da legte sich der Zorn des HERRN. Dem Tal gaben die Israeliten den Namen Achor (»Unglück«), und so wird es noch heute genannt.
They raised over him a great heap of stones that stands to this day, and the LORD turned from the fierceness of His anger. Therefore the name of that place has been called the valley of Achor to this day.
