Nach Abimelechs Tod befreite Tola, der Sohn von Puwa, Israel von seinen Feinden. Er war ein Nachkomme von Dodo aus dem Stamm Issachar und wohnte in der Stadt Schamir im Gebirge Ephraim.
Oppression of Philistines and Ammonites
Now after Abimelech died, Tola the son of Puah, the son of Dodo, a man of Issachar, arose to save Israel; and he lived in Shamir in the hill country of Ephraim.

Dreiundzwanzig Jahre war er Richter in Israel. Dann starb er und wurde in Schamir begraben.
He judged Israel twenty-three years. Then he died and was buried in Shamir.
Nach ihm führte Jaïr, ein Mann aus Gilead, Israel zweiundzwanzig Jahre lang.
After him, Jair the Gileadite arose and judged Israel twenty-two years.
Er hatte dreißig Söhne, die dreißig Esel besaßen und denen dreißig Ortschaften im Gebiet von Gilead gehörten. Noch heute nennt man diese Ortschaften die »Dörfer Jaïrs«.
He had thirty sons who rode on thirty donkeys, and they had thirty cities in the land of Gilead that are called Havvoth-jair to this day.
Nach Jaïrs Tod taten die Israeliten wieder, was dem HERRN missfiel. Sie verehrten Baal und Astarte, ebenso die Götter der Syrer und Sidonier, der Moabiter, Ammoniter und Philister. Vom HERRN wollten sie nichts wissen und dienten ihm nicht mehr.
Then the sons of Israel again did evil in the sight of the LORD, served the Baals and the Ashtaroth, the gods of Aram, the gods of Sidon, the gods of Moab, the gods of the sons of Ammon, and the gods of the Philistines; thus they forsook the LORD and did not serve Him.
Da wurde er zornig und lieferte sie den Philistern und Ammonitern aus.
The anger of the LORD burned against Israel, and He sold them into the hands of the Philistines and into the hands of the sons of Ammon.
Noch im selben Jahr eroberten die Ammoniter das Gebiet der Israeliten in Gilead östlich des Jordan, wo früher die Amoriter gelebt hatten. Achtzehn Jahre lang unterdrückten und verfolgten sie die Israeliten.
They afflicted and crushed the sons of Israel that year; for eighteen years they afflicted all the sons of Israel who were beyond the Jordan in Gilead in the land of the Amorites.
Schließlich überquerten sie den Jordan und griffen auch noch die Stämme Juda, Benjamin und Ephraim an. So gerieten die Israeliten in große Not.
The sons of Ammon crossed the Jordan to fight also against Judah, Benjamin, and the house of Ephraim, so that Israel was greatly distressed.
Sie schrien zum HERRN und bekannten: »Wir haben gegen dich gesündigt! Wir haben dich verlassen und anderen Göttern gedient!«
Then the sons of Israel cried out to the LORD, saying, “We have sinned against You, for indeed, we have forsaken our God and served the Baals.”
Der HERR antwortete ihnen: »Von so vielen Feinden habe ich euch schon befreit: von den Ägyptern, den Amoritern, den Ammonitern und den Philistern.
The LORD said to the sons of Israel, “Did I not deliver you from the Egyptians, the Amorites, the sons of Ammon, and the Philistines?
Ich habe euch auch geholfen, als die Sidonier, die Amalekiter und die Maoniter euch aus eurem Land verdrängen wollten und ihr zu mir um Hilfe rieft.
“Also when the Sidonians, the Amalekites and the Maonites oppressed you, you cried out to Me, and I delivered you from their hands.
Trotzdem habt ihr mir immer wieder den Rücken gekehrt und andere Götter verehrt! Darum werde ich euch jetzt nicht mehr helfen!
“Yet you have forsaken Me and served other gods; therefore I will no longer deliver you.
Warum fleht ihr nicht die Götter an, die ihr euch selbst ausgesucht habt? Sollen sie euch doch retten aus eurer Not!«
“Go and cry out to the gods which you have chosen; let them deliver you in the time of your distress.”
Aber die Israeliten gaben nicht auf; sie beteten zum HERRN: »Wir sind schuldig! Du kannst mit uns tun, was du für richtig hältst. Nur rette uns doch heute vor unseren Feinden!«
The sons of Israel said to the LORD, “We have sinned, do to us whatever seems good to You; only please deliver us this day.”
Sie beseitigten die fremden Götter und dienten wieder dem HERRN. Da konnte er ihr Elend nicht länger ertragen.
So they put away the foreign gods from among them and served the LORD; and He could bear the misery of Israel no longer.
Die Ammoniter zogen ihre Truppen zusammen und schlugen ihr Lager im Gebiet von Gilead auf. Darauf versammelten sich auch die Israeliten, die dort lebten, und lagerten in Mizpa.
Then the sons of Ammon were summoned and they camped in Gilead. And the sons of Israel gathered together and camped in Mizpah.
Ihre führenden Männer überlegten: »Wir brauchen jemanden, der unserem Heer voran in den Kampf zieht. Wer es tut, den ernennen wir zum Oberhaupt aller Bewohner von Gilead.«
The people, the leaders of Gilead, said to one another, “Who is the man who will begin to fight against the sons of Ammon? He shall become head over all the inhabitants of Gilead.”
