Du Menschenkind, predige den Kindern deines Volks und sprich zu ihnen: Wenn ich ein Schwert über das Land führen würde, und das Volk im Lande nähme einen Mann unter ihnen und machten ihn zu ihrem Wächter,
“Son of man, speak to your people and say to them, If I bring the sword upon a land, and the people of the land take a man from among them, and make him their watchman,
und er sähe das Schwert kommen über das Land und bliese die Drommete und warnte das Volk;
and if he sees the sword coming upon the land and blows the trumpet and warns the people,
wer nun der Drommete Hall hörte und wollte sich nicht warnen lassen, und das Schwert käme und nähme ihn weg: desselben Blut sei auf seinem Kopf;
then if anyone who hears the sound of the trumpet does not take warning, and the sword comes and takes him away, his blood shall be upon his own head.
denn er hat der Drommete Hall gehört und hat sich dennoch nicht warnen lassen; darum sei sein Blut auf ihm. Wer sich aber warnen läßt, der wird sein Leben davonbringen.
He heard the sound of the trumpet and did not take warning; his blood shall be upon himself. But if he had taken warning, he would have saved his life.
Wo aber der Wächter sähe das Schwert kommen und die Drommete nicht bliese noch sein Volk warnte, und das Schwert käme und nähme etliche weg: dieselben würden wohl um ihrer Sünden willen weggenommen; aber ihr Blut will ich von des Wächters Hand fordern.
But if the watchman sees the sword coming and does not blow the trumpet, so that the people are not warned, and the sword comes and takes any one of them, that person is taken away in his iniquity, but his blood I will require at the watchman’s hand.
Und nun, du Menschenkind, ich habe dich zu einem Wächter gesetzt über das Haus Israel, wenn du etwas aus meinem Munde hörst, daß du sie von meinetwegen warnen sollst.
“So you, son of man, I have made a watchman for the house of Israel. Whenever you hear a word from my mouth, you shall give them warning from me.
Wenn ich nun zu dem Gottlosen sage: Du Gottloser mußt des Todes sterben! und du sagst ihm solches nicht, daß sich der Gottlose warnen lasse vor seinem Wesen, so wird wohl der Gottlose um seines gottlosen Wesens willen sterben; aber sein Blut will ich von deiner Hand fordern.
If I say to the wicked, O wicked one, you shall surely die, and you do not speak to warn the wicked to turn from his way, that wicked person shall die in his iniquity, but his blood I will require at your hand.
Warnest du aber den Gottlosen vor seinem Wesen, daß er sich davon bekehre, und er will sich nicht von seinem Wesen bekehren, so wird er um seiner Sünde willen sterben, und du hast deine Seele errettet.
But if you warn the wicked to turn from his way, and he does not turn from his way, that person shall die in his iniquity, but you will have delivered your soul.
Darum, du Menschenkind, sage dem Hause Israel: Ihr sprecht also: Unsre Sünden und Missetaten liegen auf uns, daß wir darunter vergehen; wie können wir denn leben?
Why Will You Die, Israel?
“And you, son of man, say to the house of Israel, Thus have you said: ‘Surely our transgressions and our sins are upon us, and we rot away because of them. How then can we live?’
“And you, son of man, say to the house of Israel, Thus have you said: ‘Surely our transgressions and our sins are upon us, and we rot away because of them. How then can we live?’
So sprich zu ihnen: So wahr als ich lebe, spricht der HERR HERR, ich habe keinen Gefallen am Tode des Gottlosen, sondern daß sich der Gottlose bekehre von seinem Wesen und lebe. So bekehret euch doch nun von eurem bösen Wesen. Warum wollt ihr sterben, ihr vom Hause Israel?
Say to them, As I live, declares the Lord God, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked turn from his way and live; turn back, turn back from your evil ways, for why will you die, O house of Israel?
Und du, Menschenkind, sprich zu deinem Volk: Wenn ein Gerechter Böses tut, so wird’s ihm nicht helfen, daß er fromm gewesen ist; und wenn ein Gottloser fromm wird, so soll’s ihm nicht schaden, daß er gottlos gewesen ist. So kann auch der Gerechte nicht leben, wenn er sündigt.
“And you, son of man, say to your people, The righteousness of the righteous shall not deliver him when he transgresses, and as for the wickedness of the wicked, he shall not fall by it when he turns from his wickedness, and the righteous shall not be able to live by his righteousnessa when he sins.
Denn wo ich zu dem Gerechten spreche, er soll leben, und er verläßt sich auf seine Gerechtigkeit und tut Böses, so soll aller seiner Frömmigkeit nicht gedacht werden; sondern er soll sterben in seiner Bosheit, die er tut.
Though I say to the righteous that he shall surely live, yet if he trusts in his righteousness and does injustice, none of his righteous deeds shall be remembered, but in his injustice that he has done he shall die.
Und wenn ich zum Gottlosen spreche, er soll sterben und er bekehrt sich von seiner Sünde und tut, was recht und gut ist,
Again, though I say to the wicked, ‘You shall surely die,’ yet if he turns from his sin and does what is just and right,
also daß der Gottlose das Pfand wiedergibt und bezahlt, was er geraubt hat, und nach dem Wort des Lebens wandelt, daß er kein Böses tut: so soll er leben und nicht sterben,
if the wicked restores the pledge, gives back what he has taken by robbery, and walks in the statutes of life, not doing injustice, he shall surely live; he shall not die.
und aller seiner Sünden, die er getan hat, soll nicht gedacht werden; denn er tut nun, was recht und gut ist; darum soll er leben.
None of the sins that he has committed shall be remembered against him. He has done what is just and right; he shall surely live.
Aber dein Volk spricht: Der HERR urteilt nicht recht, so doch sie unrecht haben.
“Yet your people say, ‘The way of the Lord is not just,’ when it is their own way that is not just.
Denn wo der Gerechte sich kehrt von seiner Gerechtigkeit und tut Böses, so stirbt er ja billig darum.
When the righteous turns from his righteousness and does injustice, he shall die for it.
Und wo sich der Gottlose bekehrt von seinem gottlosen Wesen und tut, was recht und gut ist, so soll er ja billig leben.
And when the wicked turns from his wickedness and does what is just and right, he shall live by this.
Doch sprecht ihr: Der HERR urteilt nicht recht, so ich doch euch vom Hause Israel einen jeglichen nach seinem Wesen richte.
Yet you say, ‘The way of the Lord is not just.’ O house of Israel, I will judge each of you according to his ways.”
Und es begab sich im zwölften Jahr unserer Gefangenschaft, am fünften Tage des zehnten Monats, kam zu mir ein Entronnener von Jerusalem und sprach: Die Stadt ist geschlagen.
Jerusalem Struck Down
In the twelfth year of our exile, in the tenth month, on the fifth day of the month, a fugitive from Jerusalem came to me and said, “The city has been struck down.”

Und die Hand des HERRN war über mir des Abends, ehe der Entronnene kam, und tat mir meinen Mund auf, bis er zu mir kam des Morgens; und tat mir meinen Mund auf, also daß ich nicht mehr schweigen mußte.
Now the hand of the Lord had been upon me the evening before the fugitive came; and he had opened my mouth by the time the man came to me in the morning, so my mouth was opened, and I was no longer mute.
Du Menschenkind, die Einwohner dieser Wüsten im Lande Israel sprechen also: Abraham war ein einziger Mann und erbte dies Land; unser aber sind viele, desto billiger gehört das Land uns zu.
“Son of man, the inhabitants of these waste places in the land of Israel keep saying, ‘Abraham was only one man, yet he got possession of the land; but we are many; the land is surely given us to possess.’
Darum sprich zu ihnen: So spricht der HERR HERR: Ihr habt Blutiges gegessen und eure Augen zu den Götzen aufgehoben und Blut vergossen; und ihr meint, ihr wollt das Land besitzen?
Therefore say to them, Thus says the Lord God: You eat flesh with the blood and lift up your eyes to your idols and shed blood; shall you then possess the land?
Ja, ihr fahret immer fort mit Morden und übet Greuel, und einer schändet dem andern sein Weib; und ihr meint, ihr wollt das Land besitzen?
You rely on the sword, you commit abominations, and each of you defiles his neighbor’s wife; shall you then possess the land?
So sprich zu ihnen: So spricht der HERR HERR: So wahr ich lebe, sollen alle, so in den Wüsten wohnen, durchs Schwert fallen; und die auf dem Felde sind, will ich den Tieren zu fressen geben; und die in den Festungen und Höhlen sind, sollen an der Pestilenz sterben.
Say this to them, Thus says the Lord God: As I live, surely those who are in the waste places shall fall by the sword, and whoever is in the open field I will give to the beasts to be devoured, and those who are in strongholds and in caves shall die by pestilence.
Denn ich will das Land ganz verwüsten und seiner Hoffart und Macht ein Ende machen, daß das Gebirge Israel so wüst werde, daß niemand dadurchgehe.
And I will make the land a desolation and a waste, and her proud might shall come to an end, and the mountains of Israel shall be so desolate that none will pass through.
Und sie sollen erfahren, daß ich der HERR bin, wenn ich das Land ganz verwüstet habe um aller ihrer Greuel willen, die sie üben.
Then they will know that I am the Lord, when I have made the land a desolation and a waste because of all their abominations that they have committed.
Und du, Menschenkind, dein Volk redet über dich an den Wänden und unter den Haustüren, und einer spricht zum andern: Kommt doch und laßt uns hören, was der HERR sage!
“As for you, son of man, your people who talk together about you by the walls and at the doors of the houses, say to one another, each to his brother, ‘Come, and hear what the word is that comes from the Lord.’
Und sie werden zu dir kommen in die Versammlung und vor dir sitzen als mein Volk und werden deine Worte hören, aber nicht darnach tun; sondern sie werden sie gern in ihrem Munde haben, und gleichwohl fortleben in ihrem Geiz.
And they come to you as people come, and they sit before you as my people, and they hear what you say but they will not do it; for with lustful talk in their mouths they act; their heart is set on their gain.
Und siehe, du mußt ihnen sein wie ein liebliches Liedlein, wie einer, der eine schöne Stimme hat und wohl spielen kann. Also werden sie deine Worte hören, und nicht darnach tun.
