Ai Defeats the Israelites
But Israel violated the instructions about the things set apart for the LORD.a A man named Achan had stolen some of these dedicated things, so the LORD was very angry with the Israelites. Achan was the son of Carmi, a descendant of Zimrib son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah.

Und Josua sandte Männer aus von Jericho gen Ai, das bei Beth–Aven liegt, gegen Morgen vor Beth–El, und sprach zu ihnen: Gehet hinauf und erkundet das Land! Und da sie hinaufgegangen waren und Ai erkundet hatten,
Joshua sent some of his men from Jericho to spy out the town of Ai, east of Bethel, near Beth-aven.
kamen sie wieder zu Josua und sprachen zu ihm: Laß nicht das ganze Volk hinaufziehen, sondern bei 2000 oder 3000 Mann, daß sie hinaufziehen und schlagen Ai, daß nicht das ganze Volk sich daselbst bemühe; denn ihrer ist wenig.
When they returned, they told Joshua, “There’s no need for all of us to go up there; it won’t take more than two or three thousand men to attack Ai. Since there are so few of them, don’t make all our people struggle to go up there.”
Also zogen hinauf des Volks bei 3000 Mann, und sie flohen vor den Männern zu Ai.
So approximately 3,000 warriors were sent, but they were soundly defeated. The men of Ai
Und die von Ai schlugen ihrer bei 36 Mann und jagten sie vor dem Tor bis gen Sabarim und schlugen sie den Weg herab. Da ward dem Volk das Herz verzagt und ward zu Wasser.
Josua aber zerriß seine Kleider und fiel auf sein Angesicht zur Erde vor der Lade des HERRN bis auf den Abend samt den Ältesten Israels, und sie warfen Staub auf ihre Häupter.
Joshua and the elders of Israel tore their clothing in dismay, threw dust on their heads, and bowed face down to the ground before the Ark of the LORD until evening.
Und Josua sprach: Ach HERR HERR, warum hast du dies Volk über den Jordan geführt, daß du uns in die Hände der Amoriter gäbest, uns umzubringen? O, daß wir’s uns hätten gefallen lassen, jenseit des Jordans zu bleiben!
Then Joshua cried out, “Oh, Sovereign LORD, why did you bring us across the Jordan River if you are going to let the Amorites kill us? If only we had been content to stay on the other side!
Ach, mein HERR, was soll ich sagen, weil Israel seinen Feinden den Rücken kehrt?
Lord, what can I say now that Israel has fled from its enemies?
Wenn das die Kanaaniter und alle Einwohner des Landes hören, so werden sie uns umbringen und auch unsern Namen ausrotten von der Erde. Was willst du denn für deinen großen Namen tun?
For when the Canaanites and all the other people living in the land hear about it, they will surround us and wipe our name off the face of the earth. And then what will happen to the honor of your great name?”
Da sprach der HERR zu Josua: Stehe auf! Warum liegst du also auf deinem Angesicht?
But the LORD said to Joshua, “Get up! Why are you lying on your face like this?
Israel hat sich versündigt, sie haben meinen Bund übertreten, den ich ihnen geboten habe, und haben des Verbannten etwas genommen und gestohlen und es verleugnet und unter eure Geräte gelegt.
Israel has sinned and broken my covenant! They have stolen some of the things that I commanded must be set apart for me. And they have not only stolen them but have lied about it and hidden the things among their own belongings.
Die Kinder Israel können nicht stehen vor ihren Feinden, sondern müssen ihren Feinden den Rücken kehren; denn sie sind im Bann. Ich werde hinfort nicht mit euch sein, wo ihr nicht den Bann aus euch vertilget.
That is why the Israelites are running from their enemies in defeat. For now Israel itself has been set apart for destruction. I will not remain with you any longer unless you destroy the things among you that were set apart for destruction.
Stehe auf und heilige das Volk und sprich: Heiliget euch auf morgen. Denn also sagte der HERR, der Gott Israels: Es ist ein Bann unter dir Israel; darum kannst du nicht stehen vor deinen Feinden, bis daß ihr den Bann von euch tut.
“Get up! Command the people to purify themselves in preparation for tomorrow. For this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: Hidden among you, O Israel, are things set apart for the LORD. You will never defeat your enemies until you remove these things from among you.
Und sollt euch früh herzumachen, ein Stamm nach dem andern; und welchen Stamm der HERR treffen wird, der soll sich herzumachen, ein Geschlecht nach dem andern; und welch Geschlecht der HERR treffen wird, das soll sich herzumachen, ein Haus nach dem andern; und welch Haus der HERR treffen wird, das soll sich herzumachen, ein Hauswirt nach dem andern.
“In the morning you must present yourselves by tribes, and the LORD will point out the tribe to which the guilty man belongs. That tribe must come forward with its clans, and the LORD will point out the guilty clan. That clan will then come forward, and the LORD will point out the guilty family. Finally, each member of the guilty family must come forward one by one.
Und welcher gefunden wird im Bann, den soll man mit Feuer verbrennen mit allem, was er hat, darum daß er den Bund des HERRN übertreten und eine Torheit in Israel begangen hat.
The one who has stolen what was set apart for destruction will himself be burned with fire, along with everything he has, for he has broken the covenant of the LORD and has done a horrible thing in Israel.”
Da machte sich Josua des Morgens früh auf und brachte Israel herzu, einen Stamm nach dem andern; und es ward getroffen der Stamm Juda.
Achan’s Sin
Early the next morning Joshua brought the tribes of Israel before the LORD, and the tribe of Judah was singled out.
Und da er die Geschlechter in Juda herzubrachte, ward getroffen das Geschlecht der Serahiter. Und da er das Geschlecht der Serahiter herzubrachte, einen Hauswirt nach dem andern, ward Sabdi getroffen.
Then the clans of Judah came forward, and the clan of Zerah was singled out. Then the families of Zerah came forward, and the family of Zimri was singled out.
Und da er sein Haus herzubrachte, einen Wirt nach dem andern, ward getroffen Achan, der Sohn Charmis, des Sohnes Sabdis, des Sohnes Serahs, aus dem Stamm Juda.
Every member of Zimri’s family was brought forward person by person, and Achan was singled out.
Und Josua sprach zu Achan: Mein Sohn, gib dem HERRN, dem Gott Israels, die Ehre und gib ihm das Lob und sage mir an: Was hast du getan? und leugne mir nichts.
Then Joshua said to Achan, “My son, give glory to the LORD, the God of Israel, by telling the truth. Make your confession and tell me what you have done. Don’t hide it from me.”
Da antwortete Achan Josua und sprach: Wahrlich, ich habe mich versündigt an dem HERRN, dem Gott Israels. Also und also habe ich getan:
Achan replied, “It is true! I have sinned against the LORD, the God of Israel.
ich sah unter dem Raub einen köstlichen babylonischen Mantel und 200 Silberlinge und eine goldene Stange, 50 Lot am Gewicht; des gelüstete mich, und ich nahm es. Und siehe es ist verscharrt in die Erde in meiner Hütte und das Silber darunter.
Da sandte Josua Boten hin, die liefen zur Hütte; und siehe, es war verscharrt in seiner Hütte und das Silber darunter.
So Joshua sent some men to make a search. They ran to the tent and found the stolen goods hidden there, just as Achan had said, with the silver buried beneath the rest.
Und sie nahmen’s aus der Hütte und brachten’s zu Josua und zu allen Kindern Israel und schütteten es vor den HERRN.
They took the things from the tent and brought them to Joshua and all the Israelites. Then they laid them on the ground in the presence of the LORD.
Da nahm Josua und das ganze Israel mit ihm Achan, den Sohn Serahs, samt dem Silber, Mantel und der goldenen Stange, seine Söhne und Töchter, seine Ochsen und Esel und Schafe, seine Hütte und alles, was er hatte, und führten sie hinauf ins Tal Achor.
Then Joshua and all the Israelites took Achan, the silver, the robe, the bar of gold, his sons, daughters, cattle, donkeys, sheep, goats, tent, and everything he had, and they brought them to the valley of Achor.
Und Josua sprach: Weil du uns betrübt hast, so betrübe dich der HERR an diesem Tage. Und das ganze Israel steinigte ihn und verbrannte sie mit Feuer. Und da sie sie gesteinigt hatten,
Then Joshua said to Achan, “Why have you brought trouble on us? The LORD will now bring trouble on you.” And all the Israelites stoned Achan and his family and burned their bodies.
machten sie über sie einen großen Steinhaufen, der bleibt bis auf diesen Tag. Also kehrte sich der HERR von dem Grimm seines Zorns. Daher heißt derselbe Ort das Tal Achor bis auf diesen Tag.
