Und doch: Ihr Glück liegt nicht in ihrer Hand. Von ihren üblen Reden halte ich mich fern! —
Wie oft geschieht’s denn, dass ihr Licht verlöscht, das Licht der Menschen, die Gott verachten? Wie oft holt sie das Unheil ein? Wann trifft sie jemals Gottes Zorn?

Mit eigenen Augen sollen Übeltäter ihr Verderben sehen, vom Zorn des Allmächtigen bis zur bitteren Neige kosten!

Denn was kümmert sie das Schicksal ihrer Kinder, wenn ihr eigenes Leben abgelaufen ist?

Gott richtet selbst die höchsten Engel. Wer unter uns will ihn da noch belehren?

Der eine stirbt, noch voll bei Kräften, hat sicher und sorglos gelebt.
Seine Melkeimer flossen stets über von frischer Milch; er selbst war gesund und wohlgenährt.

Der andere stirbt einsam und verbittert, er hat sein Leben lang nicht eine Spur von Glück gesehen.

Ich weiß genau, was ihr jetzt denkt, mit welchen Vorurteilen ihr mir unrecht tut!

Ihr sagt: ›Wo ist es geblieben, das Haus des Tyrannen? Von der Bleibe der Gottlosen ist nichts mehr zu sehen!‹

Doch habt ihr noch nie mit Reisenden gesprochen, die weit herumgekommen sind, und noch nie gehört, was sie erzählten:

dass der Böse verschont wird, wenn Gott in seinem Zorn Gericht hält? Er kommt mit heiler Haut davon!

Wer sagt ihm ins Gesicht, was er getan hat? Wer bestraft ihn, wie er es verdient? Keiner!
