Warning Against the Adulteress

My son, keep my words
and treasure up my commandments with you;

Mein Sohn, achte auf meine Worte, meine Gebote verwahre bei dir!

keep my commandments and live;
keep my teaching as the apple of your eye;

Bewahre meine Gebote, damit du am Leben bleibst, hüte meine Unterweisung wie deinen Augapfel!

bind them on your fingers;
write them on the tablet of your heart.

Binde sie dir an die Finger, schreib sie auf die Tafel deines Herzens!

Say to wisdom, “You are my sister,”
and call insight your intimate friend,

Sag zur Weisheit: Du bist meine Schwester! und nenne die Klugheit deine Freundin!

to keep you from the forbiddena woman,
from the adulteressb with her smooth words.

Sie bewahrt dich vor der fremden Frau, vor der Fremden, die ihre Worte glatt macht.

For at the window of my house
I have looked out through my lattice,

Vom Fenster meines Hauses, durch das Gitter, habe ich ausgeschaut;

and I have seen among the simple,
I have perceived among the youths,
a young man lacking sense,

da sah ich bei den Unerfahrenen, da bemerkte ich bei den Burschen einen jungen Mann ohne Verstand:

passing along the street near her corner,
taking the road to her house

Er ging über die Straße nahe ihrer Ecke und nahm den Weg zu ihrem Haus,

in the twilight, in the evening,
at the time of night and darkness.

als der Tag sich neigte, in der Abenddämmerung, um die Zeit, da es dunkel wird und die Nacht kommt.

And behold, the woman meets him,
dressed as a prostitute, wily of heart.c

Da! Eine Frau kommt auf ihn zu, im Kleid der Dirnen, mit listiger Absicht;

She is loud and wayward;
her feet do not stay at home;

voll Leidenschaft ist sie und unbändig, ihre Füße blieben nicht mehr im Haus;

now in the street, now in the market,
and at every corner she lies in wait.

bald auf den Gassen, bald auf den Plätzen, an allen Straßenecken lauert sie.

She seizes him and kisses him,
and with bold face she says to him,

Nun packt sie ihn, küsst ihn, sagt zu ihm mit keckem Gesicht:

“I had to offer sacrifices,d
and today I have paid my vows;

Ich war zu Heilsopfern verpflichtet und heute erfüllte ich meine Gelübde.

so now I have come out to meet you,
to seek you eagerly, and I have found you.

Darum bin ich ausgegangen, dir entgegen, ich habe dich gesucht und gefunden.

I have spread my couch with coverings,
colored linens from Egyptian linen;

Ich habe Decken über mein Bett gebreitet, bunte Tücher aus ägyptischem Leinen;

I have perfumed my bed with myrrh,
aloes, and cinnamon.

ich habe mein Lager besprengt mit Myrrhe, Aloe und Zimt.

Come, let us take our fill of love till morning;
let us delight ourselves with love.

Komm, wir wollen bis zum Morgen in Liebe schwelgen, wir wollen die Liebeslust kosten.

For my husband is not at home;
he has gone on a long journey;

Denn der Mann ist nicht zu Hause, er ist auf Reisen, weit fort.

he took a bag of money with him;
at full moon he will come home.”

Den Geldbeutel hat er mitgenommen, erst am Vollmondstag kehrt er heim.

With much seductive speech she persuades him;
with her smooth talk she compels him.

So macht sie ihn willig mit viel Überredung, mit schmeichelnden Lippen verführt sie ihn.

All at once he follows her,
as an ox goes to the slaughter,
or as a stag is caught faste

Sofort folgt er ihr, wie ein Ochse, den man zum Schlachten führt, wie ein Hirsch, den das Fangseil umschlingt,

till an arrow pierces its liver;
as a bird rushes into a snare;
he does not know that it will cost him his life.

bis ein Pfeil ihm die Leber zerreißt; wie ein Vogel, der in das Netz fliegt und nicht merkt, dass es um sein Leben geht.

And now, O sons, listen to me,
and be attentive to the words of my mouth.

Darum, ihr Söhne, hört auf mich, achtet auf meine Reden!

Let not your heart turn aside to her ways;
do not stray into her paths,

Dein Herz schweife nicht ab auf ihre Wege, verirre dich nicht auf ihre Pfade!

for many a victim has she laid low,
and all her slain are a mighty throng.

Denn zahlreich sind die Erschlagenen, die sie gefällt hat; viele sind es, die sie getötet hat;

Her house is the way to Sheol,
going down to the chambers of death.

ihr Haus ist ein Weg zur Unterwelt, er führt zu den Kammern des Todes.
