Warning Against the Adulteress

My son, keep my words
and treasure up my commandments with you;

Mein Kind, behalte meine Rede und verbirg meine Gebote bei dir.

keep my commandments and live;
keep my teaching as the apple of your eye;

Behalte meine Gebote, so wirst du leben, und mein Gesetz wie deinen Augapfel.

bind them on your fingers;
write them on the tablet of your heart.

Binde sie an deine Finger; schreibe sie auf die Tafel deines Herzens.

Say to wisdom, “You are my sister,”
and call insight your intimate friend,

Sprich zur Weisheit: »Du bist meine Schwester,« und nenne die Klugheit deine Freundin,

to keep you from the forbiddena woman,
from the adulteressb with her smooth words.

daß du behütet werdest vor dem fremden Weibe, vor einer andern, die glatte Worte gibt.

For at the window of my house
I have looked out through my lattice,

Denn am Fenster meines Hauses guckte ich durchs Gitter

and I have seen among the simple,
I have perceived among the youths,
a young man lacking sense,

und sah unter den Unverständigen und ward gewahr unter den Kindern eines törichten Jünglings,

passing along the street near her corner,
taking the road to her house

der ging auf der Gasse an einer Ecke und trat daher auf dem Wege bei ihrem Hause,

in the twilight, in the evening,
at the time of night and darkness.

in der Dämmerung, am Abend des Tages, da es Nacht ward und dunkel war.

And behold, the woman meets him,
dressed as a prostitute, wily of heart.c

Und siehe, da begegnete ihm ein Weib im Hurenschmuck, listig,

She is loud and wayward;
her feet do not stay at home;

wild und unbändig, daß ihr Füße in ihrem Hause nicht bleiben können.

now in the street, now in the market,
and at every corner she lies in wait.

Jetzt ist sie draußen, jetzt auf der Gasse, und lauert an allen Ecken.

She seizes him and kisses him,
and with bold face she says to him,

Und erwischte ihn und küßte ihn unverschämt und sprach zu ihm:

“I had to offer sacrifices,d
and today I have paid my vows;

Ich habe Dankopfer für mich heute bezahlt für meine Gelübde.

so now I have come out to meet you,
to seek you eagerly, and I have found you.

Darum bin herausgegangen, dir zu begegnen, dein Angesicht zu suchen, und habe dich gefunden.

I have spread my couch with coverings,
colored linens from Egyptian linen;

Ich habe mein Bett schön geschmückt mit bunten Teppichen aus Ägypten.

I have perfumed my bed with myrrh,
aloes, and cinnamon.

Ich habe mein Lager mit Myrrhe, Aloe und Zimt besprengt.

Come, let us take our fill of love till morning;
let us delight ourselves with love.

Komm, laß uns genug buhlen bis an den Morgen und laß uns der Liebe pflegen.

For my husband is not at home;
he has gone on a long journey;

Denn der Mann ist nicht daheim; er ist einen fernen Weg gezogen.

he took a bag of money with him;
at full moon he will come home.”

Er hat den Geldsack mit sich genommen; er wird erst aufs Fest wieder heimkommen.

With much seductive speech she persuades him;
with her smooth talk she compels him.

Sie überredete ihn mit vielen Worten und gewann ihn mit ihrem glatten Munde.

All at once he follows her,
as an ox goes to the slaughter,
or as a stag is caught faste

Er folgt ihr alsbald nach, wie ein Ochse zur Fleischbank geführt wird, und wie zur Fessel, womit man die Narren züchtigt,

till an arrow pierces its liver;
as a bird rushes into a snare;
he does not know that it will cost him his life.

bis sie ihm mit dem Pfeil die Leber spaltet; wie ein Vogel zum Strick eilt und weiß nicht, daß es ihm das Leben gilt.

And now, O sons, listen to me,
and be attentive to the words of my mouth.

So gehorchet mir nun, meine Kinder, und merket auf die Rede meines Mundes.

Let not your heart turn aside to her ways;
do not stray into her paths,

Laß dein Herz nicht weichen auf ihren Weg und laß dich nicht verführen auf ihrer Bahn.

for many a victim has she laid low,
and all her slain are a mighty throng.

Denn sie hat viele verwundet und gefällt, und sind allerlei Mächtige von ihr erwürgt.

Her house is the way to Sheol,
going down to the chambers of death.

Ihr Haus sind Wege zum Grab, da man hinunterfährt in des Todes Kammern.
