Wieder gab Gott, der HERR, mir eine Vision. Darin zeigte er mir einen Korb mit reifem Obst.
Er fragte mich: »Amos, was siehst du?« Ich antwortete: »Einen Korb mit reifem Obst.« Da sprach der HERR zu mir: »Ja, und so ist auch mein Volk: reif für das Gericht! Von jetzt an sehe ich nicht mehr über ihre Sünden hinweg!
Wenn meine Strafe sie trifft, dann werden statt der fröhlichen Gesänge im Königspalast Trauerlieder erklingen. Alles ist voller Leichen, es herrscht Totenstille. Mein Wort gilt!«
Hear this, you who trample on the needy

Hört zu, die ihr die Armen unterdrückt und die Bedürftigen zugrunde richtet!
Ihr sagt: »Wann ist das Neumondfest endlich vorbei? Wann ist die Sabbatruhe bloß vorüber, damit wir die Kornspeicher wieder öffnen und Getreide verkaufen können? Dann treiben wir den Preis in die Höhe: Wir verkleinern das Getreidemaß und machen die Gewichte auf der Waage schwerer, wo die Käufer ihr Silbergeld abwiegen. Auch die Waage selbst stellen wir falsch ein.

Bestimmt können wir sogar noch den Getreideabfall verkaufen!« Wer euch Geld schuldet, den macht ihr zum Sklaven, ja, ihr verkauft einen Armen schon, wenn er ein Paar Schuhe nicht bezahlen kann.

Ja, ihretwegen soll die Erde beben, sie wird sich heben und senken wie der Nil in Ägypten, und die Menschen werden alle miteinander um ihre Toten trauern.

Eure Freudenfeste lasse ich zu Leichenfeiern werden und eure fröhlichen Lieder zu Totenklagen. Ich sorge dafür, dass ihr Trauergewänder anzieht und euch vor Kummer die Köpfe kahl schert. Ihr werdet so verzweifelt sein wie jemand, dessen einziger Sohn gestorben ist. Es wird ein bitterer Tag für euch sein, wenn das Ende kommt!«

»Ich, Gott, der HERR, sage euch: Es kommt die Zeit, da schicke ich euch eine Hungersnot. Aber nicht nach Brot werdet ihr hungern und nicht nach Wasser verlangen. Nein, nach einem Wort von mir werdet ihr euch sehnen!

Dann irren die Menschen ruhelos durchs Land, vom Toten Meer bis zum Mittelmeer, vom Norden bis zum Osten. Doch ihre Suche wird vergeblich sein: Ich, der HERR, antworte ihnen nicht.

shall faint for thirst.

Sie werden fallen und nicht mehr aufstehen, denn sie schwören bei dem widerlichen Götzen von Samaria und bekräftigen ihren Eid mit den Worten: ›So wahr dein Gott lebt, Heiligtum in Dan!‹ oder: ›So wahr die Wallfahrt nach Beerscheba uns Gottes Segen sichert!‹«
