I will say unto God, Do not condemn me; shew me wherefore thou contendest with me.
Gott, stell mich nicht als schuldig hin! Erklär mir doch, warum du mich anklagst!
Is it good unto thee that thou shouldest oppress, that thou shouldest despise the work of thine hands, and shine upon the counsel of the wicked?
Gefällt es dir, dass du mich unterdrückst? Warum verachtest du mich, den du selbst so kunstvoll gebildet hast? Die Pläne gewissenloser Menschen aber führst du zum Erfolg.
Hast thou eyes of flesh? or seest thou as man seeth?
Hast du denn Menschenaugen? Siehst du die Dinge nur von außen, so wie wir?
Are thy days as the days of man? are thy years as man's days,
Sind deine Lebenstage auch begrenzt, deine Jahre rasch vergangen so wie unsere?
That thou inquirest after mine iniquity, and searchest after my sin?
Warum suchst du dann nach meiner Schuld und hast es eilig, jede Sünde aufzuspüren?
Thou knowest that I am not wicked; and there is none that can deliver out of thine hand.
Du weißt doch genau, dass ich unschuldig bin und dass es keinen gibt, der mich aus deiner Hand befreit.
Thine hands have made me and fashioned me together round about; yet thou dost destroy me.
Deine Hände haben mich gebildet und geformt. Willst du dich jetzt von mir abwenden und mich zerstören?
Remember, I beseech thee, that thou hast made me as the clay; and wilt thou bring me into dust again?
Bedenke doch, dass du mich wie Ton gestaltet hast! Lässt du mich jetzt wieder zu Staub zerfallen?
Hast thou not poured me out as milk, and curdled me like cheese?
Dir verdanke ich mein Leben: dass mein Vater mich zeugte und ich im Mutterleib Gestalt annahm.
Thou hast clothed me with skin and flesh, and hast fenced me with bones and sinews.
Mit Knochen und Sehnen hast du mich durchwoben, mit Muskeln und Haut mich bekleidet.
Thou hast granted me life and favour, and thy visitation hath preserved my spirit.
Ja, du hast mir das Leben geschenkt und mir deine Güte erwiesen; deine Fürsorge hat mich stets bewahrt.
And these things hast thou hid in thine heart: I know that this is with thee.
Aber tief in deinem Herzen denkst du anders; in Wirklichkeit hast du dies beschlossen:
If I sin, then thou markest me, and thou wilt not acquit me from mine iniquity.
Auf jedes Vergehen willst du mich festnageln und mich von meiner Schuld nicht mehr freisprechen.
If I be wicked, woe unto me; and if I be righteous, yet will I not lift up my head. I am full of confusion; therefore see thou mine affliction;
Habe ich mich schuldig gemacht, dann bin ich verloren! Doch auch wenn ich im Recht bin, kann ich nicht zuversichtlich sein, denn man überhäuft mich mit Schande, und mein Elend steht mir ständig vor Augen.
For it increaseth. Thou huntest me as a fierce lion: and again thou shewest thyself marvellous upon me.
Will ich mich behaupten, jagst du mich wie ein Löwe und richtest mich wieder schrecklich zu.
Thou renewest thy witnesses against me, and increasest thine indignation upon me; changes and war are against me.
Einen Zeugen nach dem anderen lässt du gegen mich auftreten, dein Zorn wird nur noch größer, auf immer neue Art greifst du mich an.
Wherefore then hast thou brought me forth out of the womb? Oh that I had given up the ghost, and no eye had seen me!
Warum hast du zugelassen, dass ich geboren wurde? Wäre ich doch gleich gestorben — kein Mensch hätte mich je gesehen!
I should have been as though I had not been; I should have been carried from the womb to the grave.
Vom Mutterleib direkt ins Grab! Ich wäre wie einer, den es nie gegeben hat.
Are not my days few? cease then, and let me alone, that I may take comfort a little,
Wie kurz ist mein Leben! Schon fast vergangen! Lass mich jetzt in Frieden, damit ich noch ein wenig Freude habe!
Before I go whence I shall not return, even to the land of darkness and the shadow of death;
