I know it is so of a truth: but how should man be just with God?

If he will contend with him, he cannot answer him one of a thousand.
Wenn er dich vor Gericht zieht und Anklage erhebt, weißt du auf tausend Fragen keine Antwort.
He is wise in heart, and mighty in strength: who hath hardened himself against him, and hath prospered?
Gott ist weise, stark und mächtig! Wer hat sich je erfolgreich gegen ihn gestellt?
Which removeth the mountains, and they know not: which overturneth them in his anger.
Ohne Vorwarnung verrückt er Berge, und wenn er zornig wird, zerstört er sie.
Which shaketh the earth out of her place, and the pillars thereof tremble.
Er lässt die Erde zittern und beben, so dass ihre Säulen wanken.
Which commandeth the sun, and it riseth not; and sealeth up the stars.
Er spricht nur ein Wort — schon verfinstert sich die Sonne, die Sterne dürfen nicht mehr leuchten.
Which alone spreadeth out the heavens, and treadeth upon the waves of the sea.
Er allein hat den Himmel ausgebreitet, ist über die Wogen der Meere geschritten.
Which maketh Arcturus, Orion, and Pleiades, and the chambers of the south.
Den Großen Wagen hat er geschaffen, den Orion, das Siebengestirn und auch die Sternbilder des Südens.
Which doeth great things past finding out; yea, and wonders without number.
Er vollbringt gewaltige Taten; unzählbar sind seine Wunder, kein Mensch kann sie begreifen!
Lo, he goeth by me, and I see him not: he passeth on also, but I perceive him not.
Unbemerkt zieht er an mir vorüber; er geht vorbei, er streift mich, und ich nehme es gar nicht wahr!
Behold, he taketh away, who can hinder him? who will say unto him, What doest thou?
Niemand kann ihn hindern, wenn er etwas aus der Welt rafft. Wer wagt es, ihn zu fragen: ›Halt! Was tust du da?‹
If God will not withdraw his anger, the proud helpers do stoop under him.
Gott lässt seinem Zorn freien Lauf; er unterwarf sich seine Feinde, die dem Meeresungeheuer halfen, als es sich ihm widersetzte.
How much less shall I answer him, and choose out my words to reason with him?
Und ich? Was kann ich denn erwidern, mit welchen Worten ihm entgegentreten?
Whom, though I were righteous, yet would I not answer, but I would make supplication to my judge.
Auch wenn ich schuldlos wäre, könnte ich ihm nichts entgegnen, nein, ich müsste ihn als meinen Richter noch um Gnade anflehen!
If I had called, and he had answered me; yet would I not believe that he had hearkened unto my voice.
Selbst wenn ich darauf drängte, dass er mir endlich eine Antwort gibt, würde er mich kaum beachten.
For he breaketh me with a tempest, and multiplieth my wounds without cause.
Im Gegenteil: Er würde im Orkan mich packen und grundlos meine Qual vermehren.
He will not suffer me to take my breath, but filleth me with bitterness.
Er gönnt mir keine Atempause und sättigt mich mit Bitterkeit.
If I speak of strength, lo, he is strong: and if of judgment, who shall set me a time to plead?
Wollte ich meine Kraft mit ihm messen — er ist der Stärkere! Aber es geht ums Recht! Warum lädt er mich nicht vor, damit ich mich verteidigen kann?
If I justify myself, mine own mouth shall condemn me: if I say, I am perfect, it shall also prove me perverse.
Selbst wenn ich recht hätte, würde Gott mich zum Geständnis zwingen; ich müsste mich vor ihm für schuldig erklären, auch wenn ich schuldlos wäre.
Though I were perfect, yet would I not know my soul: I would despise my life.
Ja, ich bin unschuldig! Aber es ist mir völlig gleichgültig, so sehr hasse ich mein Leben!
This is one thing, therefore I said it, He destroyeth the perfect and the wicked.
Es ist alles einerlei; deshalb sage ich: Egal ob du gottlos bist oder fromm — er bringt dich doch um!
If the scourge slay suddenly, he will laugh at the trial of the innocent.
Und wenn sein Schlag plötzlich Unschuldige trifft, dann spottet er noch über ihren Schmerz!
The earth is given into the hand of the wicked: he covereth the faces of the judges thereof; if not, where, and who is he?
Fällt ein Land Tyrannen in die Hände und werden alle Richter blind für das Recht, so hat Gott das getan! Wenn nicht er — wer sonst?
Now my days are swifter than a post: they flee away, they see no good.
Meine Jahre sind vorbeigeeilt, schneller als ein Läufer, verschwunden sind sie ohne eine Spur von Glück.
They are passed away as the swift ships: as the eagle that hasteth to the prey.
Sie gleiten dahin, geschwind wie ein Boot, sie fliegen rascher als ein Adler, der sich auf die Beute stürzt.
If I say, I will forget my complaint, I will leave off my heaviness, and comfort myself:
Wenn ich mir sage: Jetzt will ich mein Klagen vergessen, will glücklich sein und mich freuen,
I am afraid of all my sorrows, I know that thou wilt not hold me innocent.
dann packt mich doch die Angst, dass meine Schmerzen wiederkommen. O Gott, ich weiß es: Du hältst mich für schuldig!
If I be wicked, why then labour I in vain?
Ich bin ja schon verurteilt — wozu soll ich mich noch abmühen?
If I wash myself with snow water, and make my hands never so clean;
Wenn ich meine Hände mit Schneewasser wüsche oder mit Lauge reinigte, als Zeichen meiner Unschuld,
Yet shalt thou plunge me in the ditch, and mine own clothes shall abhor me.
dann würdest du mich doch in eine Jauchegrube tauchen, dass sich selbst meine Kleider vor mir ekelten!
For he is not a man, as I am, that I should answer him, and we should come together in judgment.
Wärst du ein Mensch wie ich, dann könnte ich dir antworten! Wir würden beide vor Gericht gehen, damit der Streit entschieden wird.
Neither is there any daysman betwixt us, that might lay his hand upon us both.
Aber es gibt keinen, der zwischen dir und mir entscheidet und für Recht sorgt.
Let him take his rod away from me, and let not his fear terrify me:
Hör auf, mich zu bestrafen! Halte deine Schrecken von mir fern!
