How thou didst drive out the heathen with thy hand, and plantedst them; how thou didst afflict the people, and cast them out.
Gott, mit unseren eigenen Ohren haben wir’s gehört; unsere Väter haben uns davon erzählt, was für große Taten du zu ihrer Zeit vollbracht hast — doch das liegt schon lange zurück!
For they got not the land in possession by their own sword, neither did their own arm save them: but thy right hand, and thine arm, and the light of thy countenance, because thou hadst a favour unto them.
Du selbst hast fremde Völker aus dem Land vertrieben und es zur Heimat unserer Vorfahren gemacht. Die Völker, die dort wohnten, hast du zerschlagen, damit unser Volk aufblühen und sich entfalten konnte.
Thou art my King, O God: command deliverances for Jacob.
Unsere Vorväter haben das Land in Besitz genommen. Aber nicht ihre Schwerter, nicht ihre eigene Kraft verhalf ihnen zum Sieg. Nein, du hast machtvoll eingegriffen und für sie gekämpft. Du hast sie durch deine Gegenwart gestärkt, denn du hattest sie lieb.
Through thee will we push down our enemies: through thy name will we tread them under that rise up against us.
Du bist mein Gott und mein König. Auf deinen Befehl erringt Israel den Sieg.
For I will not trust in my bow, neither shall my sword save me.
Mit deiner Hilfe unterwerfen wir die Feinde; in deinem Namen bezwingen wir die Gegner.
But thou hast saved us from our enemies, and hast put them to shame that hated us.
Ich verlasse mich nicht auf meinen Bogen, mein Schwert garantiert mir nicht den Sieg.
In God we boast all the day long, and praise thy name for ever. Selah.
Du allein befreist uns aus der Gewalt unserer Feinde; du lässt alle scheitern, die uns mit ihrem Hass verfolgen.
But thou hast cast off, and put us to shame; and goest not forth with our armies.
Wir sind stolz auf unseren Gott. Darum hören wir nicht auf, dir zu danken, Herr.
Thou makest us to turn back from the enemy: and they which hate us spoil for themselves.
Und dennoch hast du uns jetzt verstoßen: Mit einer Niederlage hast du Schande über uns gebracht. Als unsere Truppen zum Kampf ausrückten, zogst du nicht mit.
Thou hast given us like sheep appointed for meat; and hast scattered us among the heathen.
Du sorgtest dafür, dass unsere Feinde uns in die Flucht schlugen — ohne jeden Widerstand plünderten sie uns in ihrem Hass aus.
Thou sellest thy people for nought, and dost not increase thy wealth by their price.
Du selbst hast uns ans Messer geliefert; sie haben uns abgeschlachtet wie Schafe. Wer mit dem Leben davonkam, wurde unter fremde Völker zerstreut.
Thou makest us a reproach to our neighbours, a scorn and a derision to them that are round about us.
Du hast dein Volk zu einem Spottpreis verkauft, und was hast du nun davon? Nichts!
Thou makest us a byword among the heathen, a shaking of the head among the people.
Du lässt unsere Nachbarvölker uns verhöhnen, nur noch Verachtung haben sie für uns übrig.
My confusion is continually before me, and the shame of my face hath covered me,
Unter den fremden Völkern ist unsere Niederlage schon sprichwörtlich, sie schütteln den Kopf über uns.
For the voice of him that reproacheth and blasphemeth; by reason of the enemy and avenger.
Täglich habe ich meine Schande vor Augen. Die Schamröte steigt mir ins Gesicht,
All this is come upon us; yet have we not forgotten thee, neither have we dealt falsely in thy covenant.
wenn ich höre, wie uns die Feinde demütigen, ja, wie diese Rachgierigen über uns lästern.
Our heart is not turned back, neither have our steps declined from thy way;
Das Unglück ist über uns gekommen, obwohl wir dich nicht vergessen haben, nie haben wir deinen Bund mit uns gebrochen!
Though thou hast sore broken us in the place of dragons, and covered us with the shadow of death.
Niemals sind wir dir untreu geworden, auch deine Gebote haben wir befolgt.
If we have forgotten the name of our God, or stretched out our hands to a strange god;
Und doch hast du uns zerschlagen, wie Schakale hausen wir in Ruinen, in tiefer Dunkelheit hältst du uns gefangen.
Shall not God search this out? for he knoweth the secrets of the heart.
Hätten wir dich, unseren Gott, vergessen und fremde Götter angebetet,
Yea, for thy sake are we killed all the day long; we are counted as sheep for the slaughter.
dann hättest du es ja sofort bemerkt. Denn du kennst unsere geheimsten Gedanken!
Awake, why sleepest thou, O Lord? arise, cast us not off for ever.
Aber unser Unglück hat einen anderen Grund: Weil wir zu dir gehören, werden wir überall verfolgt und getötet — wie Schafe, die zum Schlachten bestimmt sind!
Wherefore hidest thou thy face, and forgettest our affliction and our oppression?
Wach auf, Herr! Warum schläfst du? Wach auf und verstoße uns nicht für immer!
For our soul is bowed down to the dust: our belly cleaveth unto the earth.
Warum verbirgst du dich vor uns? Hast du unsere Not und unser Elend vergessen?
