Folgende Worte stammen von König Lemuel; seine Mutter gab sie ihm mit auf den Weg.
What, my son? and what, the son of my womb? and what, the son of my vows?
Sie sagte: »Du bist mein geliebter Sohn, die Antwort auf meine Gebete! Was soll ich dir raten?
Give not thy strength unto women, nor thy ways to that which destroyeth kings.
Lass nicht deine ganze Kraft bei den Frauen, das hat schon viele Könige zu Fall gebracht!
It is not for kings, O Lemuel, it is not for kings to drink wine; nor for princes strong drink:
Höre, Lemuel, ein König soll sich nicht betrinken und dem Wein nicht ergeben sein!
Lest they drink, and forget the law, and pervert the judgment of any of the afflicted.
Er könnte sonst im Rausch das Recht vernachlässigen und die Not der Bedürftigen vergessen.
Give strong drink unto him that is ready to perish, and wine unto those that be of heavy hearts.
Gebt den Wein lieber denen, die dahinsiechen und verbittert sind!
Let him drink, and forget his poverty, and remember his misery no more.
Lasst sie trinken und im Rausch ihre Armut und Mühsal vergessen!
Open thy mouth for the dumb in the cause of all such as are appointed to destruction.
Du aber tritt für die Leute ein, die sich selbst nicht verteidigen können! Schütze das Recht der Hilflosen!
