Pharaoh’s Dream
Now it happened at the end of two full years that Pharaoh had a dream, and behold, he was standing by the Nile.

Zwei Jahre später hatte der Pharao einen Traum: Siehe, er stand am Nil.
And lo, from the Nile there came up seven cows, sleek and fat; and they grazed in the marsh grass.
Siehe, aus dem Nil stiegen sieben Kühe von schönem Aussehen und fett im Fleisch und weideten im Riedgras.
Then behold, seven other cows came up after them from the Nile, ugly and gaunt, and they stood by the other cows on the bank of the Nile.
Nach ihnen stiegen sieben andere Kühe aus dem Nil; sie waren von hässlichem Aussehen und mager im Fleisch. Sie stellten sich neben die Kühe am Ufer des Nils.
The ugly and gaunt cows ate up the seven sleek and fat cows. Then Pharaoh awoke.
Und die hässlichen, mageren Kühe fraßen die sieben schön aussehenden und fetten Kühe auf. Dann erwachte der Pharao.
He fell asleep and dreamed a second time; and behold, seven ears of grain came up on a single stalk, plump and good.
Er schlief aber wieder ein und träumte ein zweites Mal: Siehe, an einem einzigen Halm wuchsen sieben Ähren, prall und schön.
Then behold, seven ears, thin and scorched by the east wind, sprouted up after them.
Doch siehe: Nach ihnen wuchsen sieben kümmerliche, vom Ostwind ausgedörrte Ähren.
The thin ears swallowed up the seven plump and full ears. Then Pharaoh awoke, and behold, it was a dream.
Die kümmerlichen Ähren verschlangen die sieben prallen, vollen Ähren. Der Pharao wachte auf: Siehe, es war ein Traum.
Now in the morning his spirit was troubled, so he sent and called for all the magicians of Egypt, and all its wise men. And Pharaoh told them his dreams, but there was no one who could interpret them to Pharaoh.
Am Morgen fühlte er sich beunruhigt; er schickte hin und ließ alle Wahrsager und Weisen Ägyptens rufen. Der Pharao erzählte ihnen seine Träume, doch keiner war da, der sie ihm deuten konnte.
Then the chief cupbearer spoke to Pharaoh, saying, “I would make mention today of my own offenses.
Da sagte der Obermundschenk zum Pharao: Heute muss ich an meine Verfehlungen erinnern:
“Pharaoh was furious with his servants, and he put me in confinement in the house of the captain of the bodyguard, both me and the chief baker.
Als der Pharao über seine Diener zornig war, gab er mich ins Haus des Obersten der Leibwache in Haft, mich und den Oberbäcker.
“We had a dream on the same night, he and I; each of us dreamed according to the interpretation of his own dream.
Da hatten wir, ich und er, in derselben Nacht einen Traum. Ein jeder von uns träumte entsprechend der Deutung seinen Traum.
“Now a Hebrew youth was with us there, a servant of the captain of the bodyguard, and we related them to him, and he interpreted our dreams for us. To each one he interpreted according to his own dream.
Dort war mit uns zusammen ein junger Hebräer, ein Sklave des Obersten der Leibwache. Wir erzählten es ihm und er deutete uns unsere Träume. Den Traum eines jeden deutete er.
“And just as he interpreted for us, so it happened; he restored me in my office, but he hanged him.”
Wie er es uns gedeutet hatte, so geschah es: Mich setzte man wieder in mein Amt ein, jenen aber hängte man auf.
Joseph Interprets
Then Pharaoh sent and called for Joseph, and they hurriedly brought him out of the dungeon; and when he had shaved himself and changed his clothes, he came to Pharaoh.
Da schickte der Pharao hin und ließ Josef rufen. Man holte ihn schnell aus der Grube, schor ihm die Haare, er wechselte seine Obergewänder und kam zum Pharao.
Pharaoh said to Joseph, “I have had a dream, but no one can interpret it; and I have heard it said about you, that when you hear a dream you can interpret it.”
Der Pharao sagte zu Josef: Ich hatte einen Traum, doch keiner kann ihn deuten. Von dir habe ich aber gehört, du brauchst einen Traum nur zu hören, dann kannst du ihn deuten.
Joseph then answered Pharaoh, saying, “It is not in me; God will give Pharaoh a favorable answer.”
Josef antwortete dem Pharao: Nicht ich, sondern Gott wird zum Wohl des Pharao eine Antwort geben.
So Pharaoh spoke to Joseph, “In my dream, behold, I was standing on the bank of the Nile;
Da sagte der Pharao zu Josef: In meinem Traum, siehe, da stand ich am Nilufer.
and behold, seven cows, fat and sleek came up out of the Nile, and they grazed in the marsh grass.
Siehe, aus dem Nil stiegen sieben Kühe, fett im Fleisch und von schönem Aussehen, und weideten im Riedgras.
“Lo, seven other cows came up after them, poor and very ugly and gaunt, such as I had never seen for ugliness in all the land of Egypt;
Doch siehe, nach ihnen stiegen sieben andere Kühe herauf, elend, von sehr hässlicher Gestalt und mager im Fleisch. Nie habe ich so etwas Hässliches in ganz Ägypten gesehen.
and the lean and ugly cows ate up the first seven fat cows.
Die mageren und hässlichen Kühe fraßen die sieben ersten, fetten Kühe auf.
“Yet when they had devoured them, it could not be detected that they had devoured them, for they were just as ugly as before. Then I awoke.
Sie verschwanden in ihrem Bauch, aber man merkte nicht, dass sie darin waren; sie sahen ebenso hässlich aus wie am Anfang. Dann wachte ich auf.
“I saw also in my dream, and behold, seven ears, full and good, came up on a single stalk;
Dann sah ich in meinem Traum: Siehe, auf einem einzigen Halm gingen sieben volle, schöne Ähren auf.
and lo, seven ears, withered, thin, and scorched by the east wind, sprouted up after them;
Doch siehe, nach ihnen wuchsen sieben taube, kümmerliche, vom Ostwind ausgedörrte Ähren.
and the thin ears swallowed the seven good ears. Then I told it to the magicians, but there was no one who could explain it to me.”
Die kümmerlichen Ähren verschlangen die sieben schönen Ähren. Ich habe das den Wahrsagern erzählt, aber keiner konnte mir Kunde geben.
Now Joseph said to Pharaoh, “Pharaoh’s dreams are one and the same; God has told to Pharaoh what He is about to do.
Darauf sagte Josef zum Pharao: Der Traum des Pharao ist ein und derselbe. Gott hat dem Pharao kundgetan, was er vorhat:
“The seven good cows are seven years; and the seven good ears are seven years; the dreams are one and the same.
Die sieben schönen Kühe sind sieben Jahre und die sieben schönen Ähren sind sieben Jahre. Es ist ein und derselbe Traum.
“The seven lean and ugly cows that came up after them are seven years, and the seven thin ears scorched by the east wind will be seven years of famine.
Die sieben mageren und hässlichen Kühe, die nachher heraufkamen, sind sieben Jahre und die sieben leeren, vom Ostwind ausgedörrten Ähren sind sieben Jahre Hungersnot.
“It is as I have spoken to Pharaoh: God has shown to Pharaoh what He is about to do.
Das ist es, was ich zum Pharao sagte: Gott ließ den Pharao sehen, was er vorhat:
“Behold, seven years of great abundance are coming in all the land of Egypt;
Siehe, sieben Jahre kommen, da wird großer Überfluss im ganzen Land Ägypten sein.
and after them seven years of famine will come, and all the abundance will be forgotten in the land of Egypt, and the famine will ravage the land.
Nach ihnen aber werden sieben Jahre Hungersnot heraufziehen: Da wird der ganze Überfluss im Land Ägypten vergessen sein und Hunger wird das Land auszehren.
“So the abundance will be unknown in the land because of that subsequent famine; for it will be very severe.
Dann wird man nichts mehr vom Überfluss im Land merken wegen des Hungers, der danach kommt; denn er wird sehr drückend sein.
“Now as for the repeating of the dream to Pharaoh twice, it means that the matter is determined by God, and God will quickly bring it about.
Dass aber der Pharao gleich zweimal träumte, bedeutet: Die Sache steht bei Gott fest und Gott wird sie bald ausführen.
“Now let Pharaoh look for a man discerning and wise, and set him over the land of Egypt.
Nun sehe sich der Pharao nach einem klugen, weisen Mann um und setze ihn über das Land Ägypten.
“Let Pharaoh take action to appoint overseers in charge of the land, and let him exact a fifth of the produce of the land of Egypt in the seven years of abundance.
Der Pharao möge handeln: Er bestelle Bevollmächtigte über das Land und besteuere das Land Ägypten mit einem Fünftel in den sieben Jahren des Überflusses.
“Then let them gather all the food of these good years that are coming, and store up the grain for food in the cities under Pharaoh’s authority, and let them guard it.
Sie sollen alles Brotgetreide der kommenden guten Jahre sammeln und unter der Hand des Pharao Getreide als Nahrungsmittel in den Städten speichern und verwahren.
“Let the food become as a reserve for the land for the seven years of famine which will occur in the land of Egypt, so that the land will not perish during the famine.”
Das Brotgetreide soll dem Land als Rücklage dienen für die sieben Jahre der Hungersnot, die über das Land Ägypten kommen werden. Dann wird das Land nicht an Hunger zugrunde gehen.
Now the proposal seemed good to Pharaoh and to all his servants.
Die Rede war gut in den Augen des Pharao und in den Augen aller seiner Diener.
Joseph Is Made a Ruler of Egypt
Then Pharaoh said to his servants, “Can we find a man like this, in whom is a divine spirit?”
Der Pharao sagte zu ihnen: Finden wir einen Mann wie diesen hier, einen, in dem der Geist Gottes ist?
So Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Since God has informed you of all this, there is no one so discerning and wise as you are.
Dann sagte der Pharao zu Josef: Nachdem dich Gott all das hat wissen lassen, gibt es niemand, der so klug und weise wäre wie du.
“You shall be over my house, and according to your command all my people shall do homage; only in the throne I will be greater than you.”
Du sollst über meinem Hause stehen und deinem Wort soll sich mein ganzes Volk beugen. Nur um den Thron will ich größer sein als du.
Pharaoh said to Joseph, “See, I have set you over all the land of Egypt.”
Der Pharao sagte weiter zu Josef: Schau her, ich stelle dich über das ganze Land Ägypten.
Then Pharaoh took off his signet ring from his hand and put it on Joseph’s hand, and clothed him in garments of fine linen and put the gold necklace around his neck.
Der Pharao nahm den Siegelring von seiner Hand und steckte ihn Josef an die Hand. Er bekleidete ihn mit Byssusgewändern und legte ihm die goldene Kette um den Hals.
He had him ride in his second chariot; and they proclaimed before him, “Bow the knee!” And he set him over all the land of Egypt.
Dann ließ er ihn seinen zweiten Wagen besteigen. Man rief vor ihm aus: Achtung! So stellte er ihn über das ganze Land Ägypten.
Moreover, Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Though I am Pharaoh, yet without your permission no one shall raise his hand or foot in all the land of Egypt.”
Der Pharao sagte zu Josef: Ich bin der Pharao, aber ohne dich soll niemand seine Hand oder seinen Fuß heben im ganzen Land Ägypten.
Then Pharaoh named Joseph Zaphenath-paneah; and he gave him Asenath, the daughter of Potiphera priest of On, as his wife. And Joseph went forth over the land of Egypt.
Der Pharao gab Josef den Namen Zafenat-Paneach und gab ihm Asenat, die Tochter Potiferas, des Priesters von On, zur Frau. So wurde Josef Herr über Ägypten.
Now Joseph was thirty years old when he stood before Pharaoh, king of Egypt. And Joseph went out from the presence of Pharaoh and went through all the land of Egypt.
Josef war dreißig Jahre alt, als er vor dem Pharao, dem König von Ägypten, stand. Josef ging vom Pharao weg und durchzog das ganze Land Ägypten.
During the seven years of plenty the land brought forth abundantly.
Das Land brachte in den sieben Jahren des Überflusses überreichen Ertrag.
So he gathered all the food of these seven years which occurred in the land of Egypt and placed the food in the cities; he placed in every city the food from its own surrounding fields.
Josef ließ während der sieben Jahre, in denen es Überfluss gab, alles Brotgetreide in Ägypten sammeln und in die Städte schaffen. Das Getreide der Felder rings um jede Stadt ließ er dort hineinbringen.
Thus Joseph stored up grain in great abundance like the sand of the sea, until he stopped measuring it, for it was beyond measure.
So speicherte Josef Getreide in sehr großer Menge auf, wie Sand am Meer, bis man aufhören musste, es zu messen, weil man es nicht mehr messen konnte.
The Sons of Joseph
Now before the year of famine came, two sons were born to Joseph, whom Asenath, the daughter of Potiphera priest of On, bore to him.
Ein Jahr, bevor die Hungersnot kam, wurden Josef zwei Söhne geboren. Asenat, die Tochter Potiferas, des Priesters von On, gebar sie ihm.
Joseph named the firstborn Manasseh, “For,” he said, “God has made me forget all my trouble and all my father’s household.”
Josef gab dem Erstgeborenen den Namen Manasse — der vergessen lässt — , denn er sagte: Gott hat mich all meine Sorge und mein ganzes Vaterhaus vergessen lassen.
He named the second Ephraim, “For,” he said, “God has made me fruitful in the land of my affliction.”
Dem zweiten Sohn gab er den Namen Efraim — der Fruchtbare — , denn er sagte: Gott hat mich fruchtbar werden lassen im Lande meines Elends.
When the seven years of plenty which had been in the land of Egypt came to an end,
Die sieben Jahre des Überflusses im Land Ägypten gingen zu Ende
and the seven years of famine began to come, just as Joseph had said, then there was famine in all the lands, but in all the land of Egypt there was bread.
und es begannen die sieben Jahre der Hungersnot, wie es Josef vorausgesagt hatte. Eine Hungersnot brach über alle Länder herein, im ganzen Land Ägypten aber gab es Brot.
So when all the land of Egypt was famished, the people cried out to Pharaoh for bread; and Pharaoh said to all the Egyptians, “Go to Joseph; whatever he says to you, you shall do.”
Als das ganze Land Ägypten Hunger hatte, schrie das Volk zum Pharao nach Brot. Der Pharao aber sagte zu allen Ägyptern: Geht zu Josef! Tut, was er euch sagt!
When the famine was spread over all the face of the earth, then Joseph opened all the storehouses, and sold to the Egyptians; and the famine was severe in the land of Egypt.
Als die Hungersnot über das ganze Land gekommen war, öffnete Josef alle Speicher und verkaufte Getreide an die Ägypter. Aber der Hunger wurde immer drückender im Land Ägypten.
