Israel’s Labor Increased
And afterward Moses and Aaron came and said to Pharaoh, “Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel, ‘Let My people go that they may celebrate a feast to Me in the wilderness.’”

Mose und Aaron gingen zum König von Ägypten und sagten: »So spricht der HERR, der Gott Israels: Lass mein Volk ziehen! Es soll mir zu Ehren ein Fest in der Wüste feiern!«
But Pharaoh said, “Who is the LORD that I should obey His voice to let Israel go? I do not know the LORD, and besides, I will not let Israel go.”
»Wer ist denn dieser ›HERR‹?«, fragte der Pharao. »Weshalb sollte ich ihm gehorchen und Israel gehen lassen? Ich kenne den HERRN nicht und lasse sein Volk bestimmt nicht frei!«
Then they said, “The God of the Hebrews has met with us. Please, let us go a three days’ journey into the wilderness that we may sacrifice to the LORD our God, otherwise He will fall upon us with pestilence or with the sword.”
Mose und Aaron erwiderten: »Der Herr ist der Gott der Hebräer. Er ist uns begegnet. Bitte erlaube uns doch, dass wir drei Tagereisen weit in die Wüste ziehen und dort dem HERRN, unserem Gott, Opfer darbringen! Sonst straft er uns mit Seuchen oder Krieg.«
But the king of Egypt said to them, “Moses and Aaron, why do you draw the people away from their work? Get back to your labors!”
Doch der ägyptische König blieb unnachgiebig: »Warum wollt ihr beide, Mose und Aaron, das Volk von seinen Pflichten abhalten? Was soll das? Geht zurück an die Arbeit!
Again Pharaoh said, “Look, the people of the land are now many, and you would have them cease from their labors!”
In meinem Land gibt es sowieso schon genug von euch Israeliten. Es kommt gar nicht in Frage, dass ihr sie jetzt auch noch von ihren Aufgaben abhaltet!«
So the same day Pharaoh commanded the taskmasters over the people and their foremen, saying,
Noch am selben Tag gab der Pharao den ägyptischen Aufsehern und ihren israelitischen Vorarbeitern folgenden Befehl:
“You are no longer to give the people straw to make brick as previously; let them go and gather straw for themselves.
»Ab sofort wird den Israeliten kein Stroh mehr für die Herstellung von Lehmziegeln geliefert! Schickt sie los, sie sollen selber Stroh sammeln!
“But the quota of bricks which they were making previously, you shall impose on them; you are not to reduce any of it. Because they are lazy, therefore they cry out, ‘Let us go and sacrifice to our God.’
Trotzdem müssen sie täglich genauso viele Ziegel abliefern wie bisher. Diese Leute sind faul geworden, nur deshalb jammern sie nach einem Opferfest für ihren Gott!
“Let the labor be heavier on the men, and let them work at it so that they will pay no attention to false words.”
Lasst sie noch härter arbeiten und haltet sie auf Trab! Dann haben sie keine Zeit mehr, auf falsche Versprechungen zu hören.«
So the taskmasters of the people and their foremen went out and spoke to the people, saying, “Thus says Pharaoh, ‘I am not going to give you any straw.
Die Aufseher und ihre israelitischen Vorarbeiter gingen zu den Israeliten und gaben den Erlass des Pharaos bekannt: »Ihr erhaltet ab sofort kein Stroh mehr.
‘You go and get straw for yourselves wherever you can find it, but none of your labor will be reduced.’”
Zieht selber los und seht zu, wo ihr es herbekommt! Aber lasst euch ja nicht einfallen, heute Abend weniger Ziegel abzuliefern!«
So the people scattered through all the land of Egypt to gather stubble for straw.
Daraufhin zogen die Israeliten durch das ganze Land, um Stroh für die Herstellung von Ziegeln zu sammeln.
The taskmasters pressed them, saying, “Complete your work quota, your daily amount, just as when you had straw.”
Die Aufseher trieben sie unerbittlich an: »Beeilt euch, denn ihr müsst genauso viele Ziegel abliefern wie früher, als ihr noch Stroh bekommen habt!«
Moreover, the foremen of the sons of Israel, whom Pharaoh’s taskmasters had set over them, were beaten and were asked, “Why have you not completed your required amount either yesterday or today in making brick as previously?”
Die ägyptischen Aufseher prügelten die israelitischen Vorarbeiter, die sie eingesetzt hatten, und schrien sie an: »Warum habt ihr gestern und heute nicht genug Ziegel hergestellt?«
Then the foremen of the sons of Israel came and cried out to Pharaoh, saying, “Why do you deal this way with your servants?
Darauf gingen die israelitischen Vorarbeiter zum Pharao und beschwerten sich: »Herr, weshalb behandelst du uns so?
“There is no straw given to your servants, yet they keep saying to us, ‘Make bricks!’ And behold, your servants are being beaten; but it is the fault of your own people.”
Wir bekommen kein Stroh mehr geliefert, und gleichzeitig verlangt man von uns die gleiche Menge an Ziegeln wie früher! Das schaffen wir nicht und werden zur Strafe auch noch geschlagen. Dein Volk tut uns großes Unrecht!«
But he said, “You are lazy, very lazy; therefore you say, ‘Let us go and sacrifice to the LORD.’
Der Pharao aber rief: »Faul seid ihr, nichts als faul! Nur deshalb wollt ihr wegziehen und dem HERRN Opfer darbringen!
“So go now and work; for you will be given no straw, yet you must deliver the quota of bricks.”
Und jetzt geht wieder an die Arbeit! Alles bleibt, wie es ist: Ihr bekommt kein Stroh mehr und müsst trotzdem so viele Lehmziegel abliefern wie früher.«
The foremen of the sons of Israel saw that they were in trouble because they were told, “You must not reduce your daily amount of bricks.”
Da merkten die israelitischen Vorarbeiter, in welcher ausweglosen Lage sie sich befanden: Die Arbeit wurde ihnen nicht erleichtert, sie mussten Tag für Tag die frühere Menge an Ziegeln herstellen.
When they left Pharaoh’s presence, they met Moses and Aaron as they were waiting for them.
Als sie den Königspalast verließen, trafen sie Mose und Aaron, die draußen auf sie warteten.
They said to them, “May the LORD look upon you and judge you, for you have made us odious in Pharaoh’s sight and in the sight of his servants, to put a sword in their hand to kill us.”
»Das soll euch der HERR heimzahlen!«, schimpften die Vorarbeiter. »Ihr habt den Pharao und seine Beamten gegen uns aufgebracht. Ihr habt ihnen das Schwert in die Hand gegeben, mit dem sie uns töten werden!«
Then Moses returned to the LORD and said, “O Lord, why have You brought harm to this people? Why did You ever send me?
Da rief Mose zum HERRN: »Ach, Herr, warum hast du deinem Volk das angetan? Und warum hast du mich überhaupt hierhergesandt?
