The Watchman’s Duty
And the word of the LORD came to me, saying,
And the word of the LORD came to me, saying,
Wieder empfing ich eine Botschaft vom HERRN. Er sprach zu mir:
“Son of man, speak to the sons of your people and say to them, ‘If I bring a sword upon a land, and the people of the land take one man from among them and make him their watchman,
»Du Mensch, rede zu den Leuten aus deinem Volk und richte ihnen Folgendes aus: Wenn ich in einem Land Krieg ausbrechen lasse, ernennt das Volk gewöhnlich einen Wächter.
and he sees the sword coming upon the land and blows on the trumpet and warns the people,
Er bläst das Horn und warnt die Menschen, sobald er den Feind kommen sieht.
then he who hears the sound of the trumpet and does not take warning, and a sword comes and takes him away, his blood will be on his own head.
Wenn nun jemand das Horn hört, sich aber nicht darum kümmert, wird der Feind ihn überraschen und töten. Er ist dann selbst schuld an seinem Tod,
‘He heard the sound of the trumpet but did not take warning; his blood will be on himself. But had he taken warning, he would have delivered his life.
denn er hat das Alarmsignal nicht beachtet und muss die Folgen davon tragen. Lässt er sich jedoch warnen, dann rettet er sein Leben.
‘But if the watchman sees the sword coming and does not blow the trumpet and the people are not warned, and a sword comes and takes a person from them, he is taken away in his iniquity; but his blood I will require from the watchman’s hand.’
Nun stell dir vor, dass der Wächter den Feind kommen sieht, aber trotzdem nicht das Horn bläst und das Volk nicht warnt. Wenn dann jemand umgebracht wird, so ist dies zwar eine Strafe für seine eigene Schuld, aber den Wächter werde ich für seinen Tod zur Verantwortung ziehen.
“Now as for you, son of man, I have appointed you a watchman for the house of Israel; so you will hear a message from My mouth and give them warning from Me.
Dich, Mensch, habe ich zum Wächter für das Volk Israel bestimmt. Du sollst mir gut zuhören, wenn ich dir eine Botschaft gebe, und die Israeliten in meinem Auftrag warnen.
“When I say to the wicked, ‘O wicked man, you will surely die,’ and you do not speak to warn the wicked from his way, that wicked man shall die in his iniquity, but his blood I will require from your hand.
Wenn ich einem gottlosen Menschen den Tod androhe, dann sollst du ihn ermahnen und zur Umkehr bewegen. Tust du dies nicht, so wird er sterben, wie er es für seine Sünde verdient hat. Dich aber werde ich für seinen Tod zur Rechenschaft ziehen.
“But if you on your part warn a wicked man to turn from his way and he does not turn from his way, he will die in his iniquity, but you have delivered your life.
Wenn er sich jedoch trotz deiner Warnung nicht von seinen falschen Wegen abbringen lässt, dann ist er selbst schuld an seinem Tod. Du aber hast dein Leben gerettet.«
“Now as for you, son of man, say to the house of Israel, ‘Thus you have spoken, saying, “Surely our transgressions and our sins are upon us, and we are rotting away in them; how then can we survive?”’
»Du Mensch, sprich zu den Israeliten: Ihr klagt: ›Unsere Schuld lastet schwer auf uns, wegen unserer Sünden siechen wir dahin. Wie sollen wir jetzt noch weiterleben?‹
“Say to them, ‘As I live!’ declares the Lord GOD, ‘I take no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but rather that the wicked turn from his way and live. Turn back, turn back from your evil ways! Why then will you die, O house of Israel?’
Doch ich, Gott, der HERR, schwöre, so wahr ich lebe: Mir macht es keine Freude, wenn ein Gottloser sterben muss. Nein, ich freue mich, wenn er von seinen falschen Wegen umkehrt und am Leben bleibt. Kehrt um, verlasst die alten Wege! Warum wollt ihr sterben, ihr Israeliten?
“And you, son of man, say to your fellow citizens, ‘The righteousness of a righteous man will not deliver him in the day of his transgression, and as for the wickedness of the wicked, he will not stumble because of it in the day when he turns from his wickedness; whereas a righteous man will not be able to live by his righteousness on the day when he commits sin.’
Weiter sollst du, Mensch, den Leuten aus deinem Volk sagen: Wenn jemand stets getan hat, was in meinen Augen gut und richtig ist, sich aber dann von mir abwendet, so nützt ihm seine frühere Rechtschaffenheit nichts — sie wird ihm nicht das Leben retten. Und wenn ein Mensch, der von mir nie etwas wissen wollte, von seinen falschen Wegen umkehrt, so wird er nicht durch sie zu Fall kommen.
“When I say to the righteous he will surely live, and he so trusts in his righteousness that he commits iniquity, none of his righteous deeds will be remembered; but in that same iniquity of his which he has committed he will die.
Wenn jemand mir gehorcht und ich ihm Leben verheiße, dann soll er sich also nicht in falscher Sicherheit wiegen und meinen, dass er nun ungestraft Böses tun kann. Wenn er sich dem Unrecht zuwendet, dann soll alles Gute, was er bisher getan hat, vor mir nichts mehr gelten. Weil er Schuld auf sich geladen hat, wird er sterben.
“But when I say to the wicked, ‘You will surely die,’ and he turns from his sin and practices justice and righteousness,
Anders ist es jedoch, wenn ich einem Menschen, der mich verachtet, den Tod androhe, und er sich von seinen Sünden abwendet. Wenn er von da an das Rechte tut,
if a wicked man restores a pledge, pays back what he has taken by robbery, walks by the statutes which ensure life without committing iniquity, he shall surely live; he shall not die.
seinem Schuldner das Pfand zurückgibt, erstattet, was er gestohlen hat, und kein Unrecht mehr begeht, sondern die Gebote befolgt, die zum Leben führen — dann muss er nicht sterben.
“None of his sins that he has committed will be remembered against him. He has practiced justice and righteousness; he shall surely live.
Die Schuld, die er früher auf sich geladen hat, rechne ich ihm nicht mehr an. Weil er nun für Recht und Gerechtigkeit eintritt, wird er am Leben bleiben.
“Yet your fellow citizens say, ‘The way of the Lord is not right,’ when it is their own way that is not right.
Ihr Israeliten aber sagt: ›Was der Herr tut, ist nicht gerecht!‹ Dabei seid ihr es, die Unrecht begehen!
“When the righteous turns from his righteousness and commits iniquity, then he shall die in it.
Wenn ein rechtschaffener Mensch nichts mehr von mir wissen will und Unrecht tut, dann muss er wegen seiner Schuld sterben.
“But when the wicked turns from his wickedness and practices justice and righteousness, he will live by them.
Wenn aber ein Mensch, der mich verachtet hat, sich von seinem gottlosen Leben abwendet und von nun an für Recht und Gerechtigkeit eintritt, dann rettet er sein Leben.
“Yet you say, ‘The way of the Lord is not right.’ O house of Israel, I will judge each of you according to his ways.”
Und da behauptet ihr Israeliten: ›Der Herr handelt nicht gerecht!‹ Verlasst euch darauf: Wenn ich mit euch ins Gericht gehe, ihr vom Volk Israel, dann spreche ich jedem Einzelnen das Urteil, das er verdient hat.«
Word of Jerusalem’s Capture
Now in the twelfth year of our exile, on the fifth of the tenth month, the refugees from Jerusalem came to me, saying, “The city has been taken.”
Im 12. Jahr unserer Verbannung, am 5. Tag des 10. Monats, kam ein Mann zu mir, der aus Jerusalem geflohen war, und berichtete: »Jerusalem ist erobert worden!«
Now the hand of the LORD had been upon me in the evening, before the refugees came. And He opened my mouth at the time they came to me in the morning; so my mouth was opened and I was no longer speechless.
Am Abend vorher hatte der HERR mich ergriffen und mir die Sprache zurückgegeben. Als nun der Mann am Morgen bei mir ankam, war meine Zunge gelöst, und ich konnte wieder frei reden.
Then the word of the LORD came to me saying,
Da gab der HERR mir noch eine Botschaft und sprach:
“Son of man, they who live in these waste places in the land of Israel are saying, ‘Abraham was only one, yet he possessed the land; so to us who are many the land has been given as a possession.’
»Du Mensch, die Leute in den zerstörten Städten Israels sagen: ›Abraham war nur ein Einzelner, und doch gab Gott ihm unser Land zum Besitz. Wir aber sind viele, darum wird uns das Land erst recht gehören!‹
“Therefore say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord GOD, “You eat meat with the blood in it, lift up your eyes to your idols as you shed blood. Should you then possess the land?
Richte ihnen meine Worte aus: Ihr esst Fleisch, das nicht ausgeblutet ist, ihr betet abscheuliche Götzen an und vergießt das Blut unschuldiger Menschen. Und da behauptet ihr, das Land würde euch gehören?
“You rely on your sword, you commit abominations and each of you defiles his neighbor’s wife. Should you then possess the land?”’
Ihr vertraut auf eure Waffen und tut, was ich verabscheue. Ihr vergeht euch an den Frauen anderer Männer. Und ausgerechnet euch sollte ich das Land geben?
“Thus you shall say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord GOD, “As I live, surely those who are in the waste places will fall by the sword, and whoever is in the open field I will give to the beasts to be devoured, and those who are in the strongholds and in the caves will die of pestilence.
Nein! Ich, Gott, der HERR, schwöre, so wahr ich lebe: Alle, die in den zerstörten Städten wohnen, werden mit dem Schwert getötet. Wer auf dem Land lebt, den werden die wilden Tiere zerreißen. Wer in Bergfestungen und Höhlen geflohen ist, der stirbt an der Pest.
“I will make the land a desolation and a waste, and the pride of her power will cease; and the mountains of Israel will be desolate so that no one will pass through.
Ich mache das Land zu einer menschenleeren Wüste, vor der es den Leuten graut. Eure Macht, auf die ihr so stolz seid, wird ein Ende haben. Die Berge Israels werden zur Wildnis, durch die niemand mehr zu gehen wagt.
“Then they will know that I am the LORD, when I make the land a desolation and a waste because of all their abominations which they have committed.”’
Weil ihr tut, was ich verabscheue, verwandle ich euer Land in eine trostlose, schreckliche Wüste. Daran sollt ihr erkennen, dass ich der HERR bin.«
“But as for you, son of man, your fellow citizens who talk about you by the walls and in the doorways of the houses, speak to one another, each to his brother, saying, ‘Come now and hear what the message is which comes forth from the LORD.’
»Du Mensch, die Israeliten reden über dich, wenn sie an den Straßenecken und vor ihren Häusern zusammenstehen. Sie fordern einander auf: ›Kommt, lasst uns zum Propheten gehen und hören, was der HERR ihm mitgeteilt hat!‹
“They come to you as people come, and sit before you as My people and hear your words, but they do not do them, for they do the lustful desires expressed by their mouth, and their heart goes after their gain.
Dann kommen sie in großen Scharen und setzen sich vor dich hin, ganz so, wie es sich für mein Volk gehört. Sie hören dann zwar, was du ihnen sagst, doch sie richten sich nicht danach. Sie tun so, als würden sie deine Worte begierig aufnehmen, aber insgeheim sind sie nur auf unrechten Gewinn aus.
“Behold, you are to them like a sensual song by one who has a beautiful voice and plays well on an instrument; for they hear your words but they do not practice them.
Du bist für sie wie einer, der Liebeslieder singt, eine schöne Stimme hat und gut musizieren kann. Sie hören deine Botschaft, aber sie handeln nicht danach.
