Absalom’s Conspiracy

Und es begab sich darnach, daß Absalom ließ sich machen einen Wagen und Rosse und 50 Mann, die seine Trabanten waren.
He would get up early and stand by the side of the road leading to the city gate. Whenever anyone came with a complaint to be placed before the king for a decision, Absalom would call out to him, “What town are you from?” He would answer, “Your servant is from one of the tribes of Israel.”
Auch machte sich Absalom des Morgens früh auf und trat an den Weg bei dem Tor. Und wenn jemand einen Handel hatte, daß er zum König vor Gericht kommen sollte, rief ihn Absalom zu sich und sprach: Aus welcher Stadt bist du? Wenn dann der sprach: Dein Knecht ist aus der Stämme Israels einem,
Then Absalom would say to him, “Look, your claims are valid and proper, but there is no representative of the king to hear you.”
so sprach Absalom zu ihm: Siehe, deine Sache ist recht und schlecht; aber du hast keinen, der dich hört, beim König.
And Absalom would add, “If only I were appointed judge in the land! Then everyone who has a complaint or case could come to me and I would see that they receive justice.”
Und Absalom sprach: O, wer setzt mich zum Richter im Lande, daß jedermann zu mir käme, der eine Sache und Gerichtshandel hat, daß ich ihm zum Recht hülfe!
Also, whenever anyone approached him to bow down before him, Absalom would reach out his hand, take hold of him and kiss him.
Und wenn jemand sich zu ihm tat, daß er wollte vor ihm niederfallen, so reckte er seine Hand aus und ergriff ihn und küßte ihn.
Absalom behaved in this way toward all the Israelites who came to the king asking for justice, and so he stole the hearts of the people of Israel.
Auf diese Weise tat Absalom dem ganzen Israel, wenn sie kamen vor Gericht zum König, und stahl also das Herz der Männer Israels.
Nach 40 Jahren sprach Absalom zum König: Ich will hingehen und mein Gelübde zu Hebron ausrichten, das ich dem HERRN gelobt habe.
Denn dein Knecht tat ein Gelübde, da ich zu Gessur in Syrien wohnte, und sprach: Wenn mich der HERR wieder gen Jerusalem bringt, so will ich dem HERRN einen Gottesdienst tun.
The king said to him, “Go in peace.” So he went to Hebron.
Der König sprach zu ihm: Gehe hin mit Frieden. Und er machte sich auf und ging gen Hebron.
Then Absalom sent secret messengers throughout the tribes of Israel to say, “As soon as you hear the sound of the trumpets, then say, ‘Absalom is king in Hebron.’ ”
Absalom aber hatte Kundschafter ausgesandt in alle Stämme Israels und lassen sagen: Wenn ihr der Posaune Schall hören werdet, so sprecht: Absalom ist König geworden zu Hebron.
Two hundred men from Jerusalem had accompanied Absalom. They had been invited as guests and went quite innocently, knowing nothing about the matter.
Es gingen aber mit Absalom 200 Mann von Jerusalem, die geladen waren; aber sie gingen in ihrer Einfalt und wußten nichts um die Sache.
While Absalom was offering sacrifices, he also sent for Ahithophel the Gilonite, David’s counselor, to come from Giloh, his hometown. And so the conspiracy gained strength, and Absalom’s following kept on increasing.
Absalom aber sandte auch nach Ahithophel, dem Giloniten, Davids Rat, aus seiner Stadt Gilo. Da er nun die Opfer tat, ward der Bund stark, und das Volk lief zu und mehrte sich mit Absalom.
David Flees
A messenger came and told David, “The hearts of the people of Israel are with Absalom.”

Da kam einer, der sagte es David an und sprach: Das Herz jedermanns in Israel folgt Absalom nach.
Then David said to all his officials who were with him in Jerusalem, “Come! We must flee, or none of us will escape from Absalom. We must leave immediately, or he will move quickly to overtake us and bring ruin on us and put the city to the sword.”
David sprach aber zu allen seinen Knechten, die bei ihm waren zu Jerusalem: Auf, laßt uns fliehen! denn hier wird kein Entrinnen sein vor Absalom; eilet, daß wir gehen, daß er uns nicht übereile und ergreife uns und treibe ein Unglück auf uns und schlage die Stadt mit der Schärfe des Schwerts.
The king’s officials answered him, “Your servants are ready to do whatever our lord the king chooses.”
Da sprachen die Knechte des Königs zu ihm: Was mein Herr, der König, erwählt, siehe, hier sind deine Knechte.
The king set out, with his entire household following him; but he left ten concubines to take care of the palace.
Und der König zog hinaus und sein ganzes Haus ihm nach. Er ließ aber zehn Kebsweiber zurück, das Haus zu bewahren.
So the king set out, with all the people following him, and they halted at the edge of the city.
Und da der König und alles Volk, das ihm nachfolgte, hinauskamen, blieben sie stehen am äußersten Hause.
All his men marched past him, along with all the Kerethites and Pelethites; and all the six hundred Gittites who had accompanied him from Gath marched before the king.
Und alle seine Knechte gingen an ihm vorüber; dazu alle Krether und Plether und alle Gathiter, 600 Mann, die von Gath ihm nachgefolgt waren, gingen an dem König vorüber.
The king said to Ittai the Gittite, “Why should you come along with us? Go back and stay with King Absalom. You are a foreigner, an exile from your homeland.
Und der König sprach zu Itthai, dem Gathiter: Warum gehst du auch mit uns? Kehre um und bleibe bei dem König; denn du bist hier fremd und von deinem Ort gezogen hierher.
Gestern bist du gekommen, und heute sollte ich dich mit uns hin und her ziehen lassen? Denn ich will gehen, wohin ich gehen kann. Kehre um und deine Brüder mit dir; dir widerfahre Barmherzigkeit und Treue.
But Ittai replied to the king, “As surely as the Lord lives, and as my lord the king lives, wherever my lord the king may be, whether it means life or death, there will your servant be.”
Itthai antwortete und sprach: So wahr der HERR lebt, und so wahr mein Herr König lebt, an welchem Ort mein Herr, der König, sein wird, es gerate zum Tod oder zum Leben, da wird dein Knecht auch sein.
David said to Ittai, “Go ahead, march on.” So Ittai the Gittite marched on with all his men and the families that were with him.
David sprach zu Itthai: So komm und gehe mit. Also ging Itthai, der Gathiter, und alle seine Männer und der ganze Haufe Kinder, die mit ihm waren.
The whole countryside wept aloud as all the people passed by. The king also crossed the Kidron Valley, and all the people moved on toward the wilderness.
Und das ganze Land weinte mit lauter Stimme, und alles Volk ging mit. Und der König ging über den Bach Kidron, und alles Volk ging vor auf dem Wege, der zur Wüste geht.
Zadok was there, too, and all the Levites who were with him were carrying the ark of the covenant of God. They set down the ark of God, and Abiathar offered sacrifices until all the people had finished leaving the city.
Und siehe, Zadok war auch da und alle Leviten, die bei ihm waren, und trugen die Lade des Bundes Gottes und stellten sie dahin. Und Abjathar trat empor, bis daß alles Volk zur Stadt hinauskam.
Then the king said to Zadok, “Take the ark of God back into the city. If I find favor in the Lord’s eyes, he will bring me back and let me see it and his dwelling place again.
Aber der König sprach zu Zadok: Bringe die Lade Gottes wieder in die Stadt. Werde ich Gnade finden vor dem HERRN, so wird er mich wieder holen und wird mich sie sehen lassen und sein Haus.
But if he says, ‘I am not pleased with you,’ then I am ready; let him do to me whatever seems good to him.”
Spricht er aber also: Ich habe nicht Lust zu dir, siehe, hier bin ich. Er mache es mit mir, wie es ihm wohl gefällt.
The king also said to Zadok the priest, “Do you understand? Go back to the city with my blessing. Take your son Ahimaaz with you, and also Abiathar’s son Jonathan. You and Abiathar return with your two sons.
Und der König sprach zu dem Priester Zadok: O du Seher, kehre um wieder in die Stadt mit Frieden und mit euch eure beiden Söhne, Ahimaaz, dein Sohn, und Jonathan, der Sohn Abjathars!
I will wait at the fords in the wilderness until word comes from you to inform me.”
Siehe ich will verziehen auf dem blachen Felde in der Wüste, bis daß Botschaft von euch komme, und sage mir an.
So Zadok and Abiathar took the ark of God back to Jerusalem and stayed there.
Also brachten Zadok und Abjathar die Lade Gottes wieder gen Jerusalem und blieben daselbst.
But David continued up the Mount of Olives, weeping as he went; his head was covered and he was barefoot. All the people with him covered their heads too and were weeping as they went up.
David aber ging den Ölberg hinan und weinte, und sein Haupt war verhüllt, und er ging barfuß. Dazu alles Volk, das bei ihm war, hatte ein jeglicher sein Haupt verhüllt und gingen hinan und weinten.
Now David had been told, “Ahithophel is among the conspirators with Absalom.” So David prayed, “Lord, turn Ahithophel’s counsel into foolishness.”
Und da es David angesagt ward, daß Ahithophel im Bund mit Absalom war, sprach er: HERR, mache den Ratschlag Ahithophels zur Narrheit!
When David arrived at the summit, where people used to worship God, Hushai the Arkite was there to meet him, his robe torn and dust on his head.
Und da David auf die Höhe kam, da man Gott pflegt anzubeten, siehe, da begegnete ihm Husai, der Arachiter, mit zerrissenem Rock und Erde auf seinem Haupt.
David said to him, “If you go with me, you will be a burden to me.
Und David sprach zu ihm: Wenn du mit mir gehst, wirst du mir eine Last sein.
But if you return to the city and say to Absalom, ‘Your Majesty, I will be your servant; I was your father’s servant in the past, but now I will be your servant,’ then you can help me by frustrating Ahithophel’s advice.
Wenn du aber wieder in die Stadt gingest und sprächest zu Absalom: Ich bin dein Knecht, ich will des Königs sein; der ich deines Vaters Knecht war zu der Zeit, will nun dein Knecht sein: So würdest du mir zugut den Ratschlag Ahithophels zunichte machen.
Won’t the priests Zadok and Abiathar be there with you? Tell them anything you hear in the king’s palace.
Auch sind Zadok und Abjathar, die Priester, mit dir. Alles, was du hörtest aus des Königs Haus, würdest du ansagen den Priestern Zadok und Abjathar.
Their two sons, Ahimaaz son of Zadok and Jonathan son of Abiathar, are there with them. Send them to me with anything you hear.”
Siehe, es sind bei ihnen ihre zwei Söhne: Ahimaaz, Zadoks, und Jonathan, Abjathars Sohn. Durch die kannst du mir entbieten, was du hören wirst.
