Purpose and Theme

The proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel:

Sprichwörter Salomos, des Sohnes Davids, des Königs von Israel:

for gaining wisdom and instruction;
for understanding words of insight;

um Weisheit und Erziehung kennenzulernen, um kundige Rede zu verstehen,

for receiving instruction in prudent behavior,
doing what is right and just and fair;

um Erziehung zur Einsicht zu erlangen: Gerechtigkeit, Rechtssinn und Redlichkeit,

for giving prudence to those who are simple,a
knowledge and discretion to the young —

um Unerfahrenen Klugheit zu verleihen, der Jugend Kenntnis und Umsicht.

let the wise listen and add to their learning,
and let the discerning get guidance —

Der Weise höre und vermehre sein Wissen, der Verständige lerne kluge Führung,

for understanding proverbs and parables,
the sayings and riddles of the wise.b

um Sprichwort und Gleichnis zu verstehen, die Worte von Weisen und ihre Rätsel.

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge,
but foolsc despise wisdom and instruction.

Die Furcht des HERRN ist Anfang der Erkenntnis, nur Toren verachten Weisheit und Erziehung.

Prologue: Exhortations to Embrace Wisdom

Warning Against the Invitation of Sinful Men

Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction
and do not forsake your mother’s teaching.

Höre, mein Sohn, auf die Mahnung des Vaters und die Unterweisung deiner Mutter verwirf nicht!

They are a garland to grace your head
and a chain to adorn your neck.

Sie sind ein schöner Kranz auf deinem Haupt und eine Kette für deinen Hals.

My son, if sinful men entice you,
do not give in to them.

Mein Sohn, wenn dich Sünder locken, dann folg ihnen nicht,

If they say, “Come along with us;
let’s lie in wait for innocent blood,
let’s ambush some harmless soul;

wenn sie sagen: Geh mit uns, wir wollen auf Blut lauern, dem Arglosen ohne Grund nachstellen;

let’s swallow them alive, like the grave,
and whole, like those who go down to the pit;

wie die Unterwelt wollen wir sie lebendig verschlingen, Menschen in ihrer Kraft, als wären sie dem Grab verfallen.

we will get all sorts of valuable things
and fill our houses with plunder;

Manch kostbares Stück werden wir finden, mit Beute unsere Häuser füllen.

cast lots with us;
we will all share the loot” —

Wirf dein Los in unserm Kreis, gemeinsam sei uns der Beutel!

my son, do not go along with them,
do not set foot on their paths;

Mein Sohn, geh nicht mit ihnen, halte deinen Fuß fern von ihrem Pfad!

for their feet rush into evil,
they are swift to shed blood.

Denn ihre Füße laufen dem Bösen nach, sie eilen, Blut zu vergießen.

How useless to spread a net
where every bird can see it!

Umsonst wird das Netz ausgespannt vor den Augen aller Vögel;

These men lie in wait for their own blood;
they ambush only themselves!

sie aber lauern auf ihr eigenes Blut, sie stellen ihrem eigenen Leben nach.

Such are the paths of all who go after ill-gotten gain;
it takes away the life of those who get it.

So sind die Wege all derer, die unrechten Gewinn machen wollen: Er nimmt seinen Besitzern das Leben.

Wisdom’s Rebuke

Out in the open wisdom calls aloud,
she raises her voice in the public square;

Die Weisheit ruft laut auf der Straße, auf den Plätzen erhebt sie ihre Stimme.

on top of the walld she cries out,
at the city gate she makes her speech:

Im größten Lärm ruft sie, an den Stadttoren hält sie ihre Reden:

“How long will you who are simple love your simple ways?
How long will mockers delight in mockery
and fools hate knowledge?

Wie lang noch, ihr Törichten, liebt ihr Betörung, gefällt den Zuchtlosen ihr dreistes Gerede, hassen die Toren Erkenntnis?

Repent at my rebuke!
Then I will pour out my thoughts to you,
I will make known to you my teachings.

Wendet euch meiner Mahnung zu! Dann will ich auf euch meinen Geist ausgießen und meine Worte euch kundtun.

But since you refuse to listen when I call
and no one pays attention when I stretch out my hand,

Als ich rief, habt ihr euch geweigert, meine drohende Hand hat keiner beachtet;

since you disregard all my advice
and do not accept my rebuke,

jeden Rat, den ich gab, habt ihr ausgeschlagen, meine Mahnung gefiel euch nicht.

I in turn will laugh when disaster strikes you;
I will mock when calamity overtakes you —

Darum werde auch ich lachen, wenn euch Unglück trifft, werde spotten, wenn Schrecken über euch kommt,

when calamity overtakes you like a storm,
when disaster sweeps over you like a whirlwind,
when distress and trouble overwhelm you.

wenn der Schrecken euch wie ein Unwetter naht und wie ein Sturm euer Unglück hereinbricht, wenn Not und Drangsal euch überfallen.

“Then they will call to me but I will not answer;
they will look for me but will not find me,

Dann werden sie nach mir rufen, doch ich antworte nicht; sie werden mich suchen, aber nicht finden.

since they hated knowledge
and did not choose to fear the Lord.

Weil sie die Einsicht hassten und nicht die Furcht des HERRN wählten,

Since they would not accept my advice
and spurned my rebuke,

meinen Rat nicht wollten, meine ganze Mahnung missachteten,

they will eat the fruit of their ways
and be filled with the fruit of their schemes.

sollen sie nun essen von der Frucht ihres Weges und von ihren Plänen sich sättigen.

For the waywardness of the simple will kill them,
and the complacency of fools will destroy them;

Denn die Abtrünnigkeit der Törichten ist ihr Tod, die Sorglosigkeit der Toren ist ihr Verderben.

but whoever listens to me will live in safety
and be at ease, without fear of harm.”

Wer aber auf mich hört, wohnt in Sicherheit, ihn stört kein böser Schrecken.
