The Prisoners’ Dreams

Einige Zeit später hatten zwei Beamte des ägyptischen Königs ihren Herrn verärgert: der oberste Mundschenk und der oberste Bäcker.
And Pharaoh was angry with his two officers, the chief butler and the chief baker.
Der Pharao war zornig auf sie.
So he put them in custody in the house of the captain of the guard, in the prison, the place where Joseph was confined.
Er warf sie in das Gefängnis, das dem Oberbefehlshaber der königlichen Leibwache unterstellt war und in dem auch Josef festgehalten wurde.
And the captain of the guard charged Joseph with them, and he served them; so they were in custody for a while.
Der Oberbefehlshaber beauftragte Josef damit, die neuen Gefangenen zu versorgen. Nach einiger Zeit
Then the butler and the baker of the king of Egypt, who were confined in the prison, had a dream, both of them, each man’s dream in one night and each man’s dream with its own interpretation.
hatten beide in derselben Nacht einen besonderen Traum.
Als Josef am nächsten Morgen zu ihnen kam, fielen ihm ihre niedergeschlagenen Gesichter auf.
So he asked Pharaoh’s officers who were with him in the custody of his lord’s house, saying, “Why do you look so sad today?”
»Was ist los mit euch? Warum seid ihr so bedrückt?«, fragte er.
And they said to him, “We each have had a dream, and there is no interpreter of it.”
So Joseph said to them, “Do not interpretations belong to God? Tell them to me, please.”

»Wir haben beide einen seltsamen Traum gehabt, aber hier gibt es niemanden, der uns die Träume deuten kann!«, klagten sie. »Es ist Gottes Sache, Träume zu deuten«, entgegnete Josef. »Erzählt mir doch einmal, was ihr geträumt habt!«
Then the chief butler told his dream to Joseph, and said to him, “Behold, in my dream a vine was before me,
Der Mundschenk begann: »Ich sah einen Weinstock
and in the vine were three branches; it was as though it budded, its blossoms shot forth, and its clusters brought forth ripe grapes.
mit drei Ranken. Als er Knospen trieb, waren sofort die Blüten da — und dann auch schon die reifen Trauben.
Then Pharaoh’s cup was in my hand; and I took the grapes and pressed them into Pharaoh’s cup, and placed the cup in Pharaoh’s hand.”
In meiner Hand hielt ich den Becher des Pharaos. Ich nahm die Trauben, presste ihren Saft in den Becher und gab dem König zu trinken.«
And Joseph said to him, “This is the interpretation of it: The three branches are three days.
Josef erklärte ihm, was das zu bedeuten hatte. »Die drei Ranken sind drei Tage«, sagte er.
»In drei Tagen wird der Pharao dich aus dem Gefängnis herausholen und wieder in dein Amt einsetzen. Dann wirst du ihm wie früher als oberster Mundschenk dienen.
But remember me when it is well with you, and please show kindness to me; make mention of me to Pharaoh, and get me out of this house.
Aber denk an mich, wenn es dir wieder gut geht! Erzähl dem Pharao von mir und bitte ihn, mich hier herauszuholen!
For indeed I was stolen away from the land of the Hebrews; and also I have done nothing here that they should put me into the dungeon.”
Ich wurde aus dem Land der Hebräer entführt, und auch hier in Ägypten habe ich nichts Verbotenes getan. Ich sitze unschuldig im Gefängnis!«
Als der oberste Bäcker merkte, dass der Traum des Mundschenks eine gute Bedeutung hatte, fasste er Mut. »In meinem Traum trug ich drei Brotkörbe auf dem Kopf«, erzählte er.
In the uppermost basket were all kinds of baked goods for Pharaoh, and the birds ate them out of the basket on my head.”
»Im obersten Korb lag viel feines Gebäck für den Pharao, aber Vögel kamen und fraßen alles auf.«
So Joseph answered and said, “This is the interpretation of it: The three baskets are three days.
»Die drei Körbe bedeuten drei Tage«, erklärte Josef.
»In drei Tagen wird der Pharao dich aus dem Gefängnis herausholen und an einem Baum erhängen. Die Vögel werden dein Fleisch fressen!«
Now it came to pass on the third day, which was Pharaoh’s birthday, that he made a feast for all his servants; and he lifted up the head of the chief butler and of the chief baker among his servants.
Drei Tage später hatte der Pharao Geburtstag. Er gab ein großes Fest für seine Hofbeamten und ließ den obersten Mundschenk und den obersten Bäcker aus dem Gefängnis holen.
Then he restored the chief butler to his butlership again, and he placed the cup in Pharaoh’s hand.
Vor allen Gästen setzte er den Mundschenk wieder in sein Amt ein,
But he hanged the chief baker, as Joseph had interpreted to them.
aber den Bäcker ließ er aufhängen — genau wie Josef ihre Träume gedeutet hatte.
