And Saul and the men of Israel were gathered together, and they encamped in the Valley of Elah, and drew up in battle array against the Philistines.

The Philistines stood on a mountain on one side, and Israel stood on a mountain on the other side, with a valley between them.

And a champion went out from the camp of the Philistines, named Goliath, from Gath, whose height was six cubits and a span.
Da trat aus dem Lager der Philister ein Vorkämpfer namens Goliat aus Gat hervor. Er war sechs Ellen und eine Spanne groß.
Auf seinem Kopf hatte er einen Helm aus Bronze und er trug einen Schuppenpanzer aus Bronze, der fünftausend Schekel wog.
And he had bronze armor on his legs and a bronze javelin between his shoulders.
Er hatte bronzene Schienen an den Beinen und zwischen seinen Schultern hing ein Sichelschwert aus Bronze.
Now the staff of his spear was like a weaver’s beam, and his iron spearhead weighed six hundred shekels; and a shield-bearer went before him.
Der Schaft seines Speeres war wie ein Weberbaum und die eiserne Speerspitze wog sechshundert Schekel. Sein Schildträger ging vor ihm her.
Then he stood and cried out to the armies of Israel, and said to them, “Why have you come out to line up for battle? Am I not a Philistine, and you the servants of Saul? Choose a man for yourselves, and let him come down to me.
Goliat trat vor und rief zu den Reihen der Israeliten hinüber: Warum seid ihr ausgezogen und habt euch zum Kampf aufgestellt? Bin ich nicht ein Philister und seid ihr nicht die Knechte Sauls? Wählt euch doch einen Mann aus! Er soll zu mir herunterkommen.
If he is able to fight with me and kill me, then we will be your servants. But if I prevail against him and kill him, then you shall be our servants and serve us.”
Wenn er mich im Kampf erschlagen kann, wollen wir eure Knechte sein. Wenn ich ihm aber überlegen bin und ihn erschlage, dann sollt ihr unsere Knechte sein und uns dienen.
And the Philistine said, “I defy the armies of Israel this day; give me a man, that we may fight together.”
Und der Philister sagte weiter: Heute habe ich die Reihen Israels verhöhnt. Schickt mir doch einen Mann, damit wir gegeneinander kämpfen können!
When Saul and all Israel heard these words of the Philistine, they were dismayed and greatly afraid.
Als Saul und ganz Israel diese Worte des Philisters hörten, erschraken sie und hatten große Angst.
Now David was the son of that Ephrathite of Bethlehem Judah, whose name was Jesse, and who had eight sons. And the man was old, advanced in years, in the days of Saul.
David war der Sohn eines Efratiters namens Isai aus Betlehem in Juda, der acht Söhne hatte. Zur Zeit Sauls war Isai bereits alt und betagt.
The three oldest sons of Jesse had gone to follow Saul to the battle. The names of his three sons who went to the battle were Eliab the firstborn, next to him Abinadab, and the third Shammah.

David was the youngest. And the three oldest followed Saul.

But David occasionally went and returned from Saul to feed his father’s sheep at Bethlehem.
David kehrte öfters vom Hof Sauls nach Betlehem zurück, um die Schafe seines Vaters zu hüten.
And the Philistine drew near and presented himself forty days, morning and evening.
Der Philister kam jeden Morgen und Abend und stellte sich hin — vierzig Tage lang.
Then Jesse said to his son David, “Take now for your brothers an ephah of this dried grain and these ten loaves, and run to your brothers at the camp.
Eines Tages sagte Isai zu seinem Sohn David: Nimm für deine Brüder ein Efa von diesem gerösteten Korn und diese zehn Brote und lauf damit zu ihnen ins Lager!
And carry these ten cheeses to the captain of their thousand, and see how your brothers fare, and bring back news of them.”
Und diese zehn Käse bring dem Obersten der Tausendschaft! Sieh nach, ob es deinen Brüdern gut geht, und lass dir ein Pfand von ihnen geben!
Now Saul and they and all the men of Israel were in the Valley of Elah, fighting with the Philistines.
Saul ist mit ihnen und all den anderen Israeliten im Terebinthental und sie kämpfen gegen die Philister.
So David rose early in the morning, left the sheep with a keeper, and took the things and went as Jesse had commanded him. And he came to the camp as the army was going out to the fight and shouting for the battle.
David brach früh am Morgen auf, überließ die Herde einem Wächter, lud die Sachen auf und ging, wie es ihm Isai befohlen hatte. Als er zur Wagenburg kam, rückte das Heer gerade in Schlachtordnung aus und ließ den Kampfruf erschallen.
For Israel and the Philistines had drawn up in battle array, army against army.
Israel und die Philister stellten sich, Reihe gegen Reihe, zum Kampf auf.
And David left his supplies in the hand of the supply keeper, ran to the army, and came and greeted his brothers.
David legte das Gepäck ab, überließ es dem Wächter des Trosses und lief zur Schlachtreihe. Er ging zu seinen Brüdern und fragte, wie es ihnen gehe.
Then as he talked with them, there was the champion, the Philistine of Gath, Goliath by name, coming up from the armies of the Philistines; and he spoke according to the same words. So David heard them.
Während er noch mit ihnen redete, trat gerade aus den Reihen der Philister ihr Vorkämpfer, der Philister namens Goliat aus Gat, hervor; er rief die gewohnten Worte und David hörte es.
And all the men of Israel, when they saw the man, fled from him and were dreadfully afraid.
Als alle Israeliten den Mann sahen, flohen sie vor ihm und fürchteten sich sehr.
So the men of Israel said, “Have you seen this man who has come up? Surely he has come up to defy Israel; and it shall be that the man who kills him the king will enrich with great riches, will give him his daughter, and give his father’s house exemption from taxes in Israel.”
Sie sagten: Habt ihr gesehen, wie dieser Mann daherkommt? Er kommt doch nur, um Israel zu verhöhnen. Wer ihn erschlägt, den wird der König sehr reich machen; er wird ihm seine Tochter geben und seine Familie wird er von allen Steuern in Israel befreien.
Then David spoke to the men who stood by him, saying, “What shall be done for the man who kills this Philistine and takes away the reproach from Israel? For who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?”
David fragte die Männer, die bei ihm standen: Was wird man für den Mann tun, der diesen Philister erschlägt und die Schande von Israel wegnimmt? Wer ist denn dieser unbeschnittene Philister, dass er die Schlachtreihen des lebendigen Gottes verhöhnen darf?
And the people answered him in this manner, saying, “So shall it be done for the man who kills him.”
Die Leute antworteten ihm dasselbe: Das und das wird man dem tun, der ihn erschlägt.
Now Eliab his oldest brother heard when he spoke to the men; and Eliab’s anger was aroused against David, and he said, “Why did you come down here? And with whom have you left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know your pride and the insolence of your heart, for you have come down to see the battle.”
Sein ältester Bruder Eliab hörte, wie er mit den Männern redete, und er wurde zornig auf David. Er sagte: Wozu bist du denn hergekommen? Wem hast du denn die paar Schafe in der Wüste überlassen? Ich kenne doch deine Keckheit und die Bosheit deines Herzens. Du bist nur hergekommen, um den Kampf zu sehen.
David erwiderte: Was habe ich denn jetzt wieder getan? Ich habe doch nur gefragt.
Then he turned from him toward another and said the same thing; and these people answered him as the first ones did.
Dann wandte er sich von ihm ab und einem anderen zu und fragte ihn dasselbe. Die Leute antworteten ihm wie beim ersten Mal.
Now when the words which David spoke were heard, they reported them to Saul; and he sent for him.
Als bekannt wurde, was David gesagt hatte, berichtete man davon auch in Sauls Umgebung und Saul ließ ihn holen.
Then David said to Saul, “Let no man’s heart fail because of him; your servant will go and fight with this Philistine.”
David sagte zu Saul: Niemand soll wegen des Philisters den Mut sinken lassen. Dein Knecht wird hingehen und mit diesem Philister kämpfen.
And Saul said to David, “You are not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him; for you are a youth, and he a man of war from his youth.”
Saul erwiderte ihm: Du kannst nicht zu diesem Philister hingehen, um mit ihm zu kämpfen; du bist zu jung, er aber ist ein Krieger seit seiner Jugend.
But David said to Saul, “Your servant used to keep his father’s sheep, and when a lion or a bear came and took a lamb out of the flock,
David sagte zu Saul: Dein Knecht hat für seinen Vater die Schafe gehütet. Wenn ein Löwe oder ein Bär kam und ein Lamm aus der Herde wegschleppte,
I went out after it and struck it, and delivered the lamb from its mouth; and when it arose against me, I caught it by its beard, and struck and killed it.
lief ich hinter ihm her, schlug auf ihn ein und riss das Tier aus seinem Maul. Und wenn er sich dann gegen mich aufrichtete, packte ich ihn an der Mähne und schlug ihn tot.
Your servant has killed both lion and bear; and this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, seeing he has defied the armies of the living God.”
Dein Knecht hat den Löwen und den Bären erschlagen und diesem unbeschnittenen Philister soll es genauso ergehen wie ihnen, weil er die Schlachtreihen des lebendigen Gottes verhöhnt hat.
Moreover David said, “The Lord, who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear, He will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine.”
And Saul said to David, “Go, and the Lord be with you!”
And Saul said to David, “Go, and the Lord be with you!”
Und David sagte weiter: Der HERR, der mich aus der Gewalt des Löwen und des Bären gerettet hat, wird mich auch aus der Gewalt dieses Philisters retten. Da antwortete Saul David: Geh, der HERR sei mit dir.
Und Saul zog David seine Rüstung an; er setzte ihm einen bronzenen Helm auf den Kopf und legte ihm seinen Panzer an
David fastened his sword to his armor and tried to walk, for he had not tested them. And David said to Saul, “I cannot walk with these, for I have not tested them.” So David took them off.
und über der Rüstung hängte er ihm sein Schwert um. David versuchte zu gehen, aber er war es nicht gewohnt. Darum sagte er zu Saul: Ich kann in diesen Sachen nicht gehen, ich bin nicht daran gewöhnt. Und er legte sie wieder ab,
Then he took his staff in his hand; and he chose for himself five smooth stones from the brook, and put them in a shepherd’s bag, in a pouch which he had, and his sling was in his hand. And he drew near to the Philistine.
nahm seinen Stock in die Hand, suchte sich fünf glatte Steine aus dem Bach und legte sie in die Hirtentasche, die er bei sich hatte, in den Vorratsbeutel. Die Schleuder in der Hand, ging er auf den Philister zu.
So the Philistine came, and began drawing near to David, and the man who bore the shield went before him.
Der Philister kam immer näher an David heran; sein Schildträger schritt vor ihm her.
Als der Philister aufblickte und David sah, verachtete er ihn, denn er war jung, rötlich und von schöner Gestalt.
So the Philistine said to David, “Am I a dog, that you come to me with sticks?” And the Philistine cursed David by his gods.
Der Philister sagte zu David: Bin ich denn ein Hund, dass du mit einem Stock zu mir kommst? Und er verfluchte David bei seinen Göttern.
And the Philistine said to David, “Come to me, and I will give your flesh to the birds of the air and the beasts of the field!”
Er rief David zu: Komm nur her zu mir, ich werde dein Fleisch den Vögeln des Himmels und den wilden Tieren geben.
Then David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword, with a spear, and with a javelin. But I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.
David antwortete dem Philister: Du kommst zu mir mit Schwert, Speer und Sichelschwert, ich aber komme zu dir im Namen des HERRN der Heerscharen, des Gottes der Schlachtreihen Israels, den du verhöhnt hast.
This day the Lord will deliver you into my hand, and I will strike you and take your head from you. And this day I will give the carcasses of the camp of the Philistines to the birds of the air and the wild beasts of the earth, that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel.
Heute wird dich der HERR mir ausliefern. Ich werde dich erschlagen und dir den Kopf abhauen. Die Leichen des Heeres der Philister werde ich noch heute den Vögeln des Himmels und den wilden Tieren geben. Alle Welt soll erkennen, dass Israel einen Gott hat.
Then all this assembly shall know that the Lord does not save with sword and spear; for the battle is the Lord’s, and He will give you into our hands.”
Auch alle, die hier versammelt sind, sollen erkennen, dass der HERR nicht durch Schwert und Speer Rettung verschafft; denn es ist ein Krieg des HERRN und er wird euch in unsere Hand geben.
So it was, when the Philistine arose and came and drew near to meet David, that David hurried and ran toward the army to meet the Philistine.
Als der Philister weiter vorrückte und immer näher an David herankam, lief auch David schnell auf die Schlachtreihe zu, dem Philister entgegen.
Then David put his hand in his bag and took out a stone; and he slung it and struck the Philistine in his forehead, so that the stone sank into his forehead, and he fell on his face to the earth.
Er griff in seine Hirtentasche, nahm einen Stein heraus, schleuderte ihn ab und traf den Philister an der Stirn. Der Stein drang in die Stirn ein und der Philister fiel mit dem Gesicht zu Boden.
So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and a stone, and struck the Philistine and killed him. But there was no sword in the hand of David.
So besiegte David den Philister mit einer Schleuder und einem Stein; er traf den Philister und tötete ihn, ohne ein Schwert in der Hand zu haben.
Therefore David ran and stood over the Philistine, took his sword and drew it out of its sheath and killed him, and cut off his head with it.
And when the Philistines saw that their champion was dead, they fled.
And when the Philistines saw that their champion was dead, they fled.
Dann lief David hin und trat neben den Philister. Er ergriff sein Schwert, zog es aus der Scheide, tötete ihn und schlug ihm den Kopf ab. Als die Philister sahen, dass ihr starker Mann tot war, flohen sie.
Die Männer von Israel und Juda aber griffen an, erhoben das Kriegsgeschrei und verfolgten die Philister bis nach Gat und bis vor die Tore von Ekron. Von Schaarajim bis nach Gat und Ekron lagen die erschlagenen Philister am Weg.
Then the children of Israel returned from chasing the Philistines, and they plundered their tents.
Nach der Verfolgung kehrten die Israeliten zurück und plünderten das Lager der Philister.
And David took the head of the Philistine and brought it to Jerusalem, but he put his armor in his tent.
David nahm den Kopf des Philisters und brachte ihn nach Jerusalem. Goliats Waffen aber legte er in sein Zelt.
When Saul saw David going out against the Philistine, he said to Abner, the commander of the army, “Abner, whose son is this youth?”
And Abner said, “As your soul lives, O king, I do not know.”
And Abner said, “As your soul lives, O king, I do not know.”
Als Saul David dem Philister entgegengehen sah, sagte er zu Abner, seinem Heerführer: Abner, wessen Sohn ist der junge Mann? Abner antwortete: So wahr du lebst, König, ich weiß es nicht.
So the king said, “Inquire whose son this young man is.”
Der König sagte: Dann erkundige dich, wessen Sohn der Knabe ist.
Then, as David returned from the slaughter of the Philistine, Abner took him and brought him before Saul with the head of the Philistine in his hand.
Als David zurückkehrte, nachdem er den Philister erschlagen hatte, nahm ihn Abner mit und führte ihn zu Saul. David hatte den Kopf des Philisters noch in der Hand.
