    Duties of the Musicians

    David and the army commanders then appointed men from the families of Asaph, Heman, and Jeduthun to proclaim God’s messages to the accompaniment of lyres, harps, and cymbals. Here is a list of their names and their work:

    Und David samt den Feldhauptleuten sonderten ab zu Ämtern die Kinder Asaphs, Hemans und Jedithuns, die Propheten mit Harfen, Psaltern und Zimbeln; und sie wurden gezählt zum Werk nach ihrem Amt.

    From the sons of Asaph, there were Zaccur, Joseph, Nethaniah, and Asarelah. They worked under the direction of their father, Asaph, who proclaimed God’s messages by the king’s orders.

    Unter den Kindern Asaphs waren: Sakkur, Joseph, Nethanja, Asarela, Kinder Asaph, unter Asaph der da weissagte bei dem König.

    From the sons of Jeduthun, there were Gedaliah, Zeri, Jeshaiah, Shimei,a Hashabiah, and Mattithiah, six in all. They worked under the direction of their father, Jeduthun, who proclaimed God’s messages to the accompaniment of the lyre, offering thanks and praise to the LORD.

    Von Jedithun: die Kinder Jedithuns waren: Gedalja, Sori, Jesaja, Hasabja, Matthithja, Simei, die sechs, unter ihrem Vater Jedithun, mit Harfen, der da weissagte, zu danken und zu loben den HERRN.

    From the sons of Heman, there were Bukkiah, Mattaniah, Uzziel, Shubael,b Jerimoth, Hananiah, Hanani, Eliathah, Giddalti, Romamti-ezer, Joshbekashah, Mallothi, Hothir, and Mahazioth.

    Von Heman: die Kinder Hemans waren: Bukkia, Matthanja, Usiel, Sebuel, Jerimoth, Hananja, Hanani, Eliatha, Giddalthi, Romamthi–Eser, Josbekasa, Mallothi, Hothir und Mahesioth.

    All these were the sons of Heman, the king’s seer, for God had honored him with fourteen sons and three daughters.

    Diese waren alle Kinder Hemans, des Schauers des Königs in den Worten Gottes, das Horn zu erheben; denn Gott hatte Heman 14 Söhne und drei Töchter gegeben.

    All these men were under the direction of their fathers as they made music at the house of the LORD. Their responsibilities included the playing of cymbals, harps, and lyres at the house of God. Asaph, Jeduthun, and Heman reported directly to the king.

    Diese waren alle unter ihren Vätern Asaph, Jedithun und Heman, zu singen im Hause des HERRN mit Zimbeln, Psaltern und Harfen, nach dem Amt im Hause Gottes bei dem König.

    They and their families were all trained in making music before the LORD, and each of them — 288 in all — was an accomplished musician.

    Und es war ihre Zahl samt ihren Brüdern, die im Gesang des HERRN gelehrt waren, allesamt Meister, 288.

    The musicians were appointed to their term of service by means of sacred lots, without regard to whether they were young or old, teacher or student.

    Und sie warfen das Los über ihre Ämter zugleich, dem Jüngeren wie dem Älteren, dem Lehrer wie dem Schüler.

    The first lot fell to Joseph of the Asaph clan and twelve of his sons and relatives.c
