    Misery Turned to Hope

    How miserable I am!
    I feel like the fruit picker after the harvest
    who can find nothing to eat.
    Not a cluster of grapes or a single early fig
    can be found to satisfy my hunger.

    Weh mir! Es geht mir wie nach der Obsternte, wie bei der Nachlese im Weinberg: Keine Traube ist da zum Essen, keine Frühfeige, die mein Herz begehrt.

    The godly people have all disappeared;
    not one honest person is left on the earth.
    They are all murderers,
    setting traps even for their own brothers.

    Verschwunden sind die Treuen im Land, kein Redlicher ist mehr unter den Menschen. Alle lauern auf Blut, jeder macht Jagd auf den andern mit dem Netz.

    Both their hands are equally skilled at doing evil!
    Officials and judges alike demand bribes.
    The people with influence get what they want,
    and together they scheme to twist justice.

    Sie tun das Böse und lassen sich’s gut gehen: Der Beamte — er fordert und der Richter — um Bezahlung. Und der Große entscheidet nach seiner Habgier. So verdrehen sie das Recht.

    Even the best of them is like a brier;
    the most honest is as dangerous as a hedge of thorns.
    But your judgment day is coming swiftly now.
    Your time of punishment is here, a time of confusion.

    Noch der Beste unter ihnen ist wie ein Dornstrauch, der Redlichste ist schlimmer als Dornengestrüpp. Der Tag deiner Späher, deine Heimsuchung ist gekommen; jetzt ergreift sie Bestürzung.

    Don’t trust anyone —
    not your best friend or even your wife!

    Traut dem Nachbarn nicht, verlasst euch nicht auf den Freund! Vor ihr, die an deiner Brust liegt, hüte die Pforten deines Mundes!

    For the son despises his father.
    The daughter defies her mother.
    The daughter-in-law defies her mother-in-law.
    Your enemies are right in your own household!

    Denn der Sohn verachtet den Vater, die Tochter stellt sich gegen die Mutter, die Schwiegertochter gegen die Schwiegermutter; jeder hat die eigenen Hausgenossen zum Feind.

    As for me, I look to the LORD for help.
    I wait confidently for God to save me,
    and my God will certainly hear me.

    Ich aber schaue aus nach dem HERRN, ich warte voll Vertrauen auf den Gott meiner Rettung. Mein Gott wird mich erhören.

    Do not gloat over me, my enemies!
    For though I fall, I will rise again.
    Though I sit in darkness,
    the LORD will be my light.

    Freu dich nicht über mich, meine Feindin! Zwar liege ich am Boden, doch ich stehe wieder auf. Zwar sitze ich in der Finsternis, aber der HERR ist mein Licht.

    I will be patient as the LORD punishes me,
    for I have sinned against him.
    But after that, he will take up my case
    and give me justice for all I have suffered from my enemies.
    The LORD will bring me into the light,
    and I will see his righteousness.

    Den Zorn des HERRN muss ich tragen, denn ich habe gegen ihn gesündigt; bis er meinen Rechtsstreit vertritt und mir Recht verschafft. Er wird mich hinausführen ins Licht, ich werde seine Gerechtigkeit schauen.

    Then my enemies will see that the LORD is on my side.
    They will be ashamed that they taunted me, saying,
    “So where is the LORD —
    that God of yours?”
    With my own eyes I will see their downfall;
    they will be trampled like mud in the streets.

    Meine Feindin wird es sehen und Scham wird sie bedecken, sie, die zu mir spricht: Wo ist der HERR, dein Gott? Meine Augen werden auf sie schauen. Nun wird sie zertreten, wie Gassenkot.

    In that day, Israel, your cities will be rebuilt,
    and your borders will be extended.

    Es kommt der Tag, an dem man deine Mauern wieder aufbaut, der Tag, an dem deine Grenzen sich weiten.

    People from many lands will come and honor you —
    from Assyria all the way to the towns of Egypt,
    from Egypt all the way to the Euphrates River,a
    and from distant seas and mountains.

    An jenem Tag wird man zu dir kommen, von Assur bis Ägypten und von Ägypten bis zum Eufrat, von einem Meer zum andern und von einem Gebirge zum andern.

    But the landb will become empty and desolate
    because of the wickedness of those who live there.

    Die Erde aber wird zur Öde wegen ihrer Bewohner als Frucht ihrer Taten.

    O LORD, protect your people with your shepherd’s staff;
    lead your flock, your special possession.
    Though they live alone in a thicket
    on the heights of Mount Carmel,c
    let them graze in the fertile pastures of Bashan and Gilead
    as they did long ago.

    Weide dein Volk mit deinem Stab, die Herde, die dein Erb- besitz ist, die einsam im Wald wohnt mitten im fruchtbaren Land! Sie sollen wieder im Baschan und in Gilead weiden wie in den Tagen der Vorzeit.

    “Yes,” says the LORD,
    “I will do mighty miracles for you,
    like those I did when I rescued you
    from slavery in Egypt.”

    Wie in den Tagen, als du aus dem Land Ägypten auszogst, lass uns deine Wunder schauen!

    All the nations of the world will stand amazed
    at what the LORD will do for you.
    They will be embarrassed
    at their feeble power.
    They will cover their mouths in silent awe,
    deaf to everything around them.

    Die Nationen werden es sehen und zuschanden werden in ihrer Macht. Sie werden die Hand auf den Mund legen, ihre Ohren werden taub werden.

    Like snakes crawling from their holes,
    they will come out to meet the LORD our God.
    They will fear him greatly,
    trembling in terror at his presence.

    Sie werden Staub lecken wie die Schlange, wie die Kriechtiere auf dem Erdboden. Sie werden zitternd hervorkommen aus ihren Verliesen; an den HERRN, unseren Gott, werden sie bebend sich wenden und dich fürchten.

    Where is another God like you,
    who pardons the guilt of the remnant,
    overlooking the sins of his special people?
    You will not stay angry with your people forever,
    because you delight in showing unfailing love.

    Wer ist Gott wie du, der Schuld verzeiht und an der Verfehlung vorübergeht für den Rest seines Erbteils! Nicht hält er auf ewig fest an seinem Zorn, denn er hat Wohlgefallen daran, gütig zu sein.

    Once again you will have compassion on us.
    You will trample our sins under your feet
    and throw them into the depths of the ocean!

    Er wird sich unser wieder erbarmen, er wird niedertreten unsere Schuld. Ja, du wirst in die Tiefen des Meeres werfen alle ihre Sünden.

    You will show us your faithfulness and unfailing love
    as you promised to our ancestors Abraham and Jacob long ago.

    Du wirst Jakob Treue und Abraham Liebe erweisen, wie du unseren Vätern geschworen hast in den Tagen der Vorzeit.
