When you give to someone in need, don’t do as the hypocrites do — blowing trumpets in the synagogues and streets to call attention to their acts of charity! I tell you the truth, they have received all the reward they will ever get.
Wenn du Almosen gibst, posaune es nicht vor dir her, wie es die Heuchler in den Synagogen und auf den Gassen tun, um von den Leuten gelobt zu werden! Amen, ich sage euch: Sie haben ihren Lohn bereits erhalten.
But when you give to someone in need, don’t let your left hand know what your right hand is doing.
Wenn du Almosen gibst, soll deine linke Hand nicht wissen, was deine rechte tut,
Give your gifts in private, and your Father, who sees everything, will reward you.
damit dein Almosen im Verborgenen bleibt; und dein Vater, der auch das Verborgene sieht, wird es dir vergelten.
Teaching about Prayer and Fasting
“When you pray, don’t be like the hypocrites who love to pray publicly on street corners and in the synagogues where everyone can see them. I tell you the truth, that is all the reward they will ever get.
Wenn ihr betet, macht es nicht wie die Heuchler! Sie stellen sich beim Gebet gern in die Synagogen und an die Straßenecken, damit sie von den Leuten gesehen werden. Amen, ich sage euch: Sie haben ihren Lohn bereits erhalten.
But when you pray, go away by yourself, shut the door behind you, and pray to your Father in private. Then your Father, who sees everything, will reward you.
Du aber, wenn du betest, geh in deine Kammer, schließ die Tür zu; dann bete zu deinem Vater, der im Verborgenen ist! Dein Vater, der auch das Verborgene sieht, wird es dir vergelten.
“When you pray, don’t babble on and on as the Gentiles do. They think their prayers are answered merely by repeating their words again and again.
Wenn ihr betet, sollt ihr nicht plappern wie die Heiden, die meinen, sie werden nur erhört, wenn sie viele Worte machen.
Don’t be like them, for your Father knows exactly what you need even before you ask him!
Macht es nicht wie sie; denn euer Vater weiß, was ihr braucht, noch ehe ihr ihn bittet.
Pray like this:
Our Father in heaven,
may your name be kept holy.

So sollt ihr beten: Unser Vater im Himmel, geheiligt werde dein Name,

dein Reich komme, dein Wille geschehe wie im Himmel, so auf der Erde.
and forgive us our sins,
as we have forgiven those who sin against us.

Und erlass uns unsere Schulden, wie auch wir sie unseren Schuldnern erlassen haben!
Und führe uns nicht in Versuchung, sondern rette uns vor dem Bösen!
“If you forgive those who sin against you, your heavenly Father will forgive you.
Denn wenn ihr den Menschen ihre Verfehlungen vergebt, dann wird euer himmlischer Vater auch euch vergeben.
But if you refuse to forgive others, your Father will not forgive your sins.
Wenn ihr aber den Menschen nicht vergebt, dann wird euch euer Vater eure Verfehlungen auch nicht vergeben.
“And when you fast, don’t make it obvious, as the hypocrites do, for they try to look miserable and disheveled so people will admire them for their fasting. I tell you the truth, that is the only reward they will ever get.
Wenn ihr fastet, macht kein finsteres Gesicht wie die Heuchler! Sie geben sich ein trübseliges Aussehen, damit die Leute merken, dass sie fasten. Amen, ich sage euch: Sie haben ihren Lohn bereits erhalten.
Du aber, wenn du fastest, salbe dein Haupt und wasche dein Gesicht,
Then no one will notice that you are fasting, except your Father, who knows what you do in private. And your Father, who sees everything, will reward you.
damit die Leute nicht merken, dass du fastest, sondern nur dein Vater, der im Verborgenen ist; und dein Vater, der das Verborgene sieht, wird es dir vergelten.
Teaching about Money and Possessions
“Don’t store up treasures here on earth, where moths eat them and rust destroys them, and where thieves break in and steal.
Sammelt euch nicht Schätze hier auf der Erde, wo Motte und Wurm sie zerstören und wo Diebe einbrechen und sie stehlen,
Store your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal.
sondern sammelt euch Schätze im Himmel, wo weder Motte noch Wurm sie zerstören und keine Diebe einbrechen und sie stehlen!
Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be.
Denn wo dein Schatz ist, da ist auch dein Herz.
“Your eye is like a lamp that provides light for your body. When your eye is healthy, your whole body is filled with light.
Die Leuchte des Leibes ist das Auge. Wenn dein Auge gesund ist, dann wird dein ganzer Leib hell sein.
But when your eye is unhealthy, your whole body is filled with darkness. And if the light you think you have is actually darkness, how deep that darkness is!
Wenn aber dein Auge krank ist, dann wird dein ganzer Leib finster sein. Wenn nun das Licht in dir Finsternis ist, wie groß muss dann die Finsternis sein!
“No one can serve two masters. For you will hate one and love the other; you will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and be enslaved to money.
Niemand kann zwei Herren dienen; er wird entweder den einen hassen und den andern lieben oder er wird zu dem einen halten und den andern verachten. Ihr könnt nicht Gott dienen und dem Mammon.
“That is why I tell you not to worry about everyday life — whether you have enough food and drink, or enough clothes to wear. Isn’t life more than food, and your body more than clothing?
Deswegen sage ich euch: Sorgt euch nicht um euer Leben, was ihr essen oder trinken sollt, noch um euren Leib, was ihr anziehen sollt! Ist nicht das Leben mehr als die Nahrung und der Leib mehr als die Kleidung?
Look at the birds. They don’t plant or harvest or store food in barns, for your heavenly Father feeds them. And aren’t you far more valuable to him than they are?
Seht euch die Vögel des Himmels an: Sie säen nicht, sie ernten nicht und sammeln keine Vorräte in Scheunen; euer himmlischer Vater ernährt sie. Seid ihr nicht viel mehr wert als sie?
Can all your worries add a single moment to your life?
Wer von euch kann mit all seiner Sorge sein Leben auch nur um eine kleine Spanne verlängern?
“And why worry about your clothing? Look at the lilies of the field and how they grow. They don’t work or make their clothing,
Und was sorgt ihr euch um eure Kleidung? Lernt von den Lilien des Feldes, wie sie wachsen: Sie arbeiten nicht und spinnen nicht.
yet Solomon in all his glory was not dressed as beautifully as they are.
Doch ich sage euch: Selbst Salomo war in all seiner Pracht nicht gekleidet wie eine von ihnen.
And if God cares so wonderfully for wildflowers that are here today and thrown into the fire tomorrow, he will certainly care for you. Why do you have so little faith?
Wenn aber Gott schon das Gras so kleidet, das heute auf dem Feld steht und morgen in den Ofen geworfen wird, wie viel mehr dann euch, ihr Kleingläubigen!
“So don’t worry about these things, saying, ‘What will we eat? What will we drink? What will we wear?’
Macht euch also keine Sorgen und fragt nicht: Was sollen wir essen? Was sollen wir trinken? Was sollen wir anziehen?
These things dominate the thoughts of unbelievers, but your heavenly Father already knows all your needs.
Denn nach alldem streben die Heiden. Euer himmlischer Vater weiß, dass ihr das alles braucht.
Sucht aber zuerst sein Reich und seine Gerechtigkeit; dann wird euch alles andere dazugegeben.
