Darum wollen wir beiseitelassen, was man zuerst von Christus verkünden muss, und uns dem Vollkommeneren zuwenden; wir wollen nicht noch einmal den Grund legen mit der Abkehr von toten Werken und dem Glauben an Gott,
You don’t need further instruction about baptisms, the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment.
mit der Lehre über die Taufen und die Handauflegung, über die Auferstehung der Toten und das ewige Gericht;
And so, God willing, we will move forward to further understanding.
das wollen wir dann tun, wenn Gott es zulässt.
For it is impossible to bring back to repentance those who were once enlightened — those who have experienced the good things of heaven and shared in the Holy Spirit,
Denn es ist unmöglich, jene, die einmal erleuchtet worden sind, die von der himmlischen Gabe genossen und Anteil am Heiligen Geist empfangen haben,
who have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the power of the age to come —
die das gute Wort Gottes und die Kräfte der kommenden Weltzeit gekostet haben,
and who then turn away from God. It is impossible to bring such people back to repentance; by rejecting the Son of God, they themselves are nailing him to the cross once again and holding him up to public shame.
dann aber abgefallen sind, erneut zur Umkehr zu bringen; da sie den Sohn Gottes noch einmal für sich ans Kreuz schlagen und zum Gespött machen.
When the ground soaks up the falling rain and bears a good crop for the farmer, it has God’s blessing.
Wenn ein Boden den häufig herabströmenden Regen trinkt und denen, für die er bebaut wird, nützliche Gewächse hervorbringt, empfängt er Segen von Gott;
But if a field bears thorns and thistles, it is useless. The farmer will soon condemn that field and burn it.
trägt er aber Dornen und Disteln, so ist er nutzlos und vom Fluch bedroht; am Ende wird er verbrannt.
Dear friends, even though we are talking this way, we really don’t believe it applies to you. We are confident that you are meant for better things, things that come with salvation.
Bei euch aber, Geliebte, sind wir trotz des Gesagten vom Besseren überzeugt und davon, dass ihr am Heil teilhabt.
Denn Gott ist nicht so ungerecht, euer Tun zu vergessen und die Liebe, die ihr seinem Namen bewiesen habt, indem ihr den Heiligen gedient habt und noch dient.
Our great desire is that you will keep on loving others as long as life lasts, in order to make certain that what you hope for will come true.
Wir wünschen aber, dass jeder von euch im Blick auf den Reichtum unserer Hoffnung bis zum Ende den gleichen Eifer zeigt,
Then you will not become spiritually dull and indifferent. Instead, you will follow the example of those who are going to inherit God’s promises because of their faith and endurance.
damit ihr nicht träge werdet, sondern Nachahmer derer seid, die durch Glauben und Geduld Erben der Verheißungen sind.
God’s Promises Bring Hope
For example, there was God’s promise to Abraham. Since there was no one greater to swear by, God took an oath in his own name, saying:
Denn als Gott dem Abraham die Verheißung gab, schwor er bei sich selbst, da er bei keinem Höheren schwören konnte,
und sprach: Fürwahr, ich will dir Segen schenken in Fülle und deine Nachkommen überaus zahlreich machen.
Then Abraham waited patiently, and he received what God had promised.
So erlangte Abraham durch seine Ausdauer die Verheißung.
Now when people take an oath, they call on someone greater than themselves to hold them to it. And without any question that oath is binding.
Menschen nämlich schwören bei dem Höheren; der Eid dient ihnen zur Bekräftigung und schließt jeden weiteren Einwand aus;
God also bound himself with an oath, so that those who received the promise could be perfectly sure that he would never change his mind.
deshalb hat Gott, weil er den Erben der Verheißung ausdrücklich zeigen wollte, dass sein Entschluss unabänderlich ist, sich mit einem Eid verbürgt.
So God has given both his promise and his oath. These two things are unchangeable because it is impossible for God to lie. Therefore, we who have fled to him for refuge can have great confidence as we hold to the hope that lies before us.
So sollten wir durch zwei unwiderrufliche Taten, bei denen Gott unmöglich täuschen konnte, einen kräftigen Ansporn haben, wir, die wir unsere Zuflucht dazu genommen haben, die dargebotene Hoffnung zu ergreifen.
This hope is a strong and trustworthy anchor for our souls. It leads us through the curtain into God’s inner sanctuary.
In ihr haben wir einen sicheren und festen Anker der Seele, der hineinreicht in das Innere hinter dem Vorhang;
