Joseph’s Brothers Go to Egypt
When Jacob heard that grain was available in Egypt, he said to his sons, “Why are you standing around looking at one another?

Und er sagte: Siehe, ich habe gehört, dass es in Ägypten Getreide gibt. Zieht hinunter und kauft dort für uns Getreide, damit wir am Leben bleiben und nicht sterben müssen!
I have heard there is grain in Egypt. Go down there, and buy enough grain to keep us alive. Otherwise we’ll die.”
Zehn Brüder Josefs zogen also hinunter, um in Ägypten Getreide zu kaufen.
So Joseph’s ten older brothers went down to Egypt to buy grain.
Benjamin, den Bruder Josefs, ließ Jakob nicht mit seinen Brüdern ziehen, denn er dachte: Dass ihm nur kein Unglück zustößt!
But Jacob wouldn’t let Joseph’s younger brother, Benjamin, go with them, for fear some harm might come to him.
Die Söhne Israels kamen also mitten unter anderen, die auch gekommen waren, um Getreide zu kaufen; denn Hungersnot herrschte in Kanaan.
Josef war der Gebieter über das Land. Er war es, der allen Leuten im Lande Getreide verkaufte. So kamen Josefs Brüder und warfen sich vor ihm mit dem Gesicht zur Erde nieder.
Since Joseph was governor of all Egypt and in charge of selling grain to all the people, it was to him that his brothers came. When they arrived, they bowed before him with their faces to the ground.
Als Josef seine Brüder sah, erkannte er sie. Aber er gab sich ihnen nicht zu erkennen, sondern fuhr sie barsch an. Er fragte sie: Wo kommt ihr her? Aus Kanaan, um Brotgetreide zu kaufen, sagten sie.
Joseph recognized his brothers instantly, but he pretended to be a stranger and spoke harshly to them. “Where are you from?” he demanded.
“From the land of Canaan,” they replied. “We have come to buy food.”
“From the land of Canaan,” they replied. “We have come to buy food.”
Josef hatte seine Brüder erkannt, sie aber hatten ihn nicht erkannt.
Although Joseph recognized his brothers, they didn’t recognize him.
Josef erinnerte sich an das, was er von ihnen geträumt hatte, und sagte: Spione seid ihr. Um nachzusehen, wo das Land eine Blöße hat, seid ihr gekommen.
And he remembered the dreams he’d had about them many years before. He said to them, “You are spies! You have come to see how vulnerable our land has become.”
Sie antworteten ihm: Nein, Herr. Um Brotgetreide zu kaufen, sind deine Knechte gekommen.
“No, my lord!” they exclaimed. “Your servants have simply come to buy food.
Wir alle sind Söhne ein und desselben Vaters. Ehrliche Leute sind wir, deine Knechte sind keine Spione.
We are all brothers — members of the same family. We are honest men, sir! We are not spies!”
Er aber entgegnete ihnen: Nichts da, ihr seid nur gekommen, um nachzusehen, wo das Land eine Blöße hat.
“Yes, you are!” Joseph insisted. “You have come to see how vulnerable our land has become.”
Da sagten sie: Wir, deine Knechte, waren zwölf Brüder, Söhne ein und desselben Mannes im Land Kanaan. Der Jüngste ist gegenwärtig bei unserem Vater und einer ist nicht mehr da.
“Sir,” they said, “there are actually twelve of us. We, your servants, are all brothers, sons of a man living in the land of Canaan. Our youngest brother is back there with our father right now, and one of our brothers is no longer with us.”
Josef aber sagte zu ihnen: Es ist so, wie ich euch gesagt habe: Spione seid ihr.
But Joseph insisted, “As I said, you are spies!
So wird man euch auf die Probe stellen: Beim Leben des Pharao! Ihr sollt von hier nicht eher loskommen, bis auch euer jüngster Bruder da ist.
This is how I will test your story. I swear by the life of Pharaoh that you will never leave Egypt unless your youngest brother comes here!
Schickt einen von euch hin! Er soll euren Bruder holen; ihr anderen aber werdet in Haft genommen. So wird man eure Worte überprüfen, ob ihr die Wahrheit gesagt habt oder nicht. Beim Leben des Pharao, ja, Spione seid ihr.
One of you must go and get your brother. I’ll keep the rest of you here in prison. Then we’ll find out whether or not your story is true. By the life of Pharaoh, if it turns out that you don’t have a younger brother, then I’ll know you are spies.”
Dann ließ er sie für drei Tage in Gewahrsam nehmen.
So Joseph put them all in prison for three days.
Am dritten Tag sagte Josef zu ihnen: Tut Folgendes und ihr werdet am Leben bleiben. Ich fürchte Gott.
On the third day Joseph said to them, “I am a God-fearing man. If you do as I say, you will live.
Wenn ihr ehrliche Leute seid, soll einer von euch Brüdern in Gewahrsam zurückgehalten werden. Ihr aber geht und bringt das Getreide heim, um den Hunger eurer Familien zu stillen.
If you really are honest men, choose one of your brothers to remain in prison. The rest of you may go home with grain for your starving families.
Euren jüngsten Bruder aber schafft mir herbei, damit sich eure Worte als wahr erweisen und ihr nicht sterben müsst. So machten sie es.
But you must bring your youngest brother back to me. This will prove that you are telling the truth, and you will not die.” To this they agreed.
Sie sagten zueinander: Ach ja, wir sind an unserem Bruder schuldig geworden. Wir haben zugesehen, wie er sich um sein Leben ängstigte. Als er uns um Erbarmen anflehte, haben wir nicht auf ihn gehört. Darum ist nun diese Angst über uns gekommen.
Speaking among themselves, they said, “Clearly we are being punished because of what we did to Joseph long ago. We saw his anguish when he pleaded for his life, but we wouldn’t listen. That’s why we’re in this trouble.”
Ruben entgegnete ihnen: Habe ich euch nicht gesagt: Versündigt euch nicht an dem Kind! Ihr aber habt nicht gehört. Seht, nun wird sein Blut von uns gefordert.
“Didn’t I tell you not to sin against the boy?” Reuben asked. “But you wouldn’t listen. And now we have to answer for his blood!”
Sie aber wussten nicht, dass Josef zuhörte, denn zwischen ihnen vermittelte ein Dolmetscher.
Of course, they didn’t know that Joseph understood them, for he had been speaking to them through an interpreter.
Er wandte sich von ihnen ab und weinte. Als er zu ihnen zurückkehrte und mit ihnen redete, ließ er aus ihrer Mitte Simeon festnehmen und vor ihren Augen fesseln.
Now he turned away from them and began to weep. When he regained his composure, he spoke to them again. Then he chose Simeon from among them and had him tied up right before their eyes.
Josef befahl dann, ihre Behälter mit Getreide zu füllen, einem jeden von ihnen das Geld wieder in den Sack zurückzulegen und ihnen für die Reise Verpflegung mitzugeben. So machte er es mit ihnen.
Joseph then ordered his servants to fill the men’s sacks with grain, but he also gave secret instructions to return each brother’s payment at the top of his sack. He also gave them supplies for their journey home.
Sie luden ihr Getreide auf ihre Esel und zogen fort.
So the brothers loaded their donkeys with the grain and headed for home.
Als einer seinen Sack öffnete, um in der Herberge seinen Esel zu füttern, sah er sein Geld. Siehe, es lag in seinem Getreidesack ganz oben.
But when they stopped for the night and one of them opened his sack to get grain for his donkey, he found his money in the top of his sack.
Er sagte zu seinen Brüdern: Man hat mir mein Geld zurückgegeben. Siehe, hier ist es in meinem Getreidesack. Da verließ sie der Mut und sie sagten zitternd zueinander: Was hat uns Gott da angetan?
“Look!” he exclaimed to his brothers. “My money has been returned; it’s here in my sack!” Then their hearts sank. Trembling, they said to each other, “What has God done to us?”
Sie kamen zu ihrem Vater Jakob ins Land Kanaan und berichteten ihm alles, was ihnen zugestoßen war:
When the brothers came to their father, Jacob, in the land of Canaan, they told him everything that had happened to them.
Jener Mann, der Herr des Landes, hat uns barsch angefahren und uns für Leute gehalten, die das Land ausspionieren.
“The man who is governor of the land spoke very harshly to us,” they told him. “He accused us of being spies scouting the land.
Wir sagten ihm: Ehrliche Leute sind wir und keine Spione.
But we said, ‘We are honest men, not spies.
Wir waren zwölf Brüder, Söhne ein und desselben Vaters. Einer ist nicht mehr und der Jüngste ist gegenwärtig bei unserem Vater im Land Kanaan.
We are twelve brothers, sons of one father. One brother is no longer with us, and the youngest is at home with our father in the land of Canaan.’
Jener Mann aber, der Herr des Landes, sagte zu uns: Daran will ich erkennen, ob ihr ehrliche Leute seid: Lasst einen von euch Brüdern bei mir zurück, nehmt das Getreide, das den Hunger eurer Familien stillen soll, geht
“Then the man who is governor of the land told us, ‘This is how I will find out if you are honest men. Leave one of your brothers here with me, and take grain for your starving families and go on home.
und schafft mir euren jüngsten Bruder herbei! So werde ich erfahren, dass ihr keine Spione, sondern ehrliche Leute seid. Ich gebe euch dann euren Bruder heraus und ihr dürft euch frei im Land bewegen.
But you must bring your youngest brother back to me. Then I will know you are honest men and not spies. Then I will give you back your brother, and you may trade freely in the land.’”
Während sie nun ihre Säcke leerten, da war tatsächlich der Geldbeutel eines jeden in seinem Sack. Als sie und ihr Vater ihre Geldbeutel sahen, fürchteten sie sich.
As they emptied out their sacks, there in each man’s sack was the bag of money he had paid for the grain! The brothers and their father were terrified when they saw the bags of money.
Ihr Vater Jakob sagte zu ihnen: Ihr bringt mich um meine Kinder. Josef ist nicht mehr, Simeon ist nicht mehr und Benjamin wollt ihr mir auch noch nehmen. Nichts bleibt mir erspart.
Jacob exclaimed, “You are robbing me of my children! Joseph is gone! Simeon is gone! And now you want to take Benjamin, too. Everything is going against me!”
Da sagte Ruben zu seinem Vater: Meine beiden Söhne magst du umbringen, wenn ich ihn dir nicht zurückbringe. Vertrau ihn meiner Hand an; ich bringe ihn dir wieder zurück.
Then Reuben said to his father, “You may kill my two sons if I don’t bring Benjamin back to you. I’ll be responsible for him, and I promise to bring him back.”
Er sagte: Mein Sohn wird nicht mit euch hinunterziehen. Denn sein Bruder ist schon tot, nur er allein ist noch da. Stößt ihm auf dem Weg, den ihr geht, ein Unglück zu, dann bringt ihr mein graues Haar vor Kummer in die Unterwelt.
