Der Zorn des HERRN entbrannte noch einmal gegen Israel und er reizte David gegen das Volk auf und sagte: Geh, zähl Israel und Juda!
Der König befahl Joab, dem Obersten des Heeres, der bei ihm war: Durchstreift alle Stämme Israels von Dan bis Beerscheba und mustert das Volk, damit ich die Zahl des Volkes kenne!
So the king said to Joab the commander of the army who was with him, “Now go throughout all the tribes of Israel, from Dan to Beersheba, and count the people, that I may know the number of the people.”
Joab aber sagte zum König: Der HERR, dein Gott, möge das Volk vermehren, hundertmal mehr, als es jetzt ist, und mein Herr, der König, möge es mit eigenen Augen sehen. Warum aber hat mein Herr, der König, Gefallen an einer solchen Sache?
And Joab said to the king, “Now may the Lord your God add to the people a hundred times more than there are, and may the eyes of my lord the king see it. But why does my lord the king desire this thing?”
Doch der König beharrte gegenüber Joab und den Anführern des Heeres auf seinem Befehl und Joab und die Anführer des Heeres verließen den König, um das Volk Israel zu mustern.
Sie überschritten den Jordan und begannen bei Aroër, rechts von der Stadt, die mitten im Tal liegt. Dann gingen sie auf Gad und Jaser zu
And they crossed over the Jordan and camped in Aroer, on the right side of the town which is in the midst of the ravine of Gad, and toward Jazer.

Then they came to Gilead and to the land of Tahtim Hodshi; they came to Dan Jaan and around to Sidon;
Dann kamen sie zur Festung Tyrus und zu all den Städten der Hiwiter und der Kanaaniter. Darauf zogen sie in den Negeb von Juda hinab nach Beerscheba.
and they came to the stronghold of Tyre and to all the cities of the Hivites and the Canaanites. Then they went out to South Judah as far as Beersheba.
So durchstreiften sie das ganze Land und kamen nach neun Monaten und zwanzig Tagen wieder nach Jerusalem zurück.
So when they had gone through all the land, they came to Jerusalem at the end of nine months and twenty days.
Und Joab gab dem König das Ergebnis der Volkszählung bekannt: Israel zählte achthunderttausend Krieger, die mit dem Schwert kämpfen konnten, und Juda fünfhunderttausend.
Then Joab gave the sum of the number of the people to the king. And there were in Israel eight hundred thousand valiant men who drew the sword, and the men of Judah were five hundred thousand men.
Dann aber schlug David das Gewissen, nachdem er das Volk gezählt hatte, und er sagte zum HERRN: Ich habe schwer gesündigt, weil ich das getan habe. Doch vergib deinem Knecht seine Schuld, HERR; denn ich habe sehr unvernünftig gehandelt.
The Judgment on David’s Sin
And David’s heart condemned him after he had numbered the people. So David said to the Lord, “I have sinned greatly in what I have done; but now, I pray, O Lord, take away the iniquity of Your servant, for I have done very foolishly.”

Als David am Morgen aufstand, war bereits folgendes Wort des HERRN an den Propheten Gad, den Seher Davids, ergangen:
Now when David arose in the morning, the word of the Lord came to the prophet Gad, David’s seer, saying,
Geh und sag zu David: So spricht der HERR: Dreierlei lege ich dir vor. Wähl dir eines davon! Das werde ich dir antun.
“Go and tell David, ‘Thus says the Lord: “I offer you three things; choose one of them for yourself, that I may do it to you.” ’ ”
Gad kam zu David, teilte ihm das Wort mit und sagte: Was soll über dich kommen? Sieben Jahre Hungersnot in deinem Land? Oder drei Monate Flucht vor deinen Feinden, die dich verfolgen? Oder drei Tage Pest in deinem Land? Überleg dir sehr genau, was ich dem, der mich gesandt hat, als Antwort überbringen soll!
So Gad came to David and told him; and he said to him, “Shall seven[c] years of famine come to you in your land? Or shall you flee three months before your enemies, while they pursue you? Or shall there be three days’ plague in your land? Now consider and see what answer I should take back to Him who sent me.”
Da sagte David zu Gad: Ich habe große Angst. Wir wollen lieber in die Hand des HERRN fallen, denn seine Barmherzigkeit ist groß; den Menschen aber möchte ich nicht in die Hand fallen.
And David said to Gad, “I am in great distress. Please let us fall into the hand of the Lord, for His mercies are great; but do not let me fall into the hand of man.”
Da ließ der HERR über Israel eine Pest kommen; sie dauerte von jenem Morgen an bis zu dem festgesetzten Zeitpunkt und es starben zwischen Dan und Beerscheba siebzigtausend Mann im Volk.
So the Lord sent a plague upon Israel from the morning till the appointed time. From Dan to Beersheba seventy thousand men of the people died.
Als der Engel seine Hand gegen Jerusalem ausstreckte, um es ins Verderben zu stürzen, reute den HERRN das Unheil und er sagte zu dem Engel, der das Volk ins Verderben stürzte: Es ist jetzt genug, lass deine Hand sinken! Der Engel war gerade bei der Tenne des Jebusiters Arauna.
Als David den Engel sah, der das Volk schlug, sagte er zum HERRN: Ich bin es doch, der gesündigt hat; ich bin es, der sich vergangen hat. Aber diese, die Herde, was haben denn sie getan? Erheb deine Hand gegen mich und gegen das Haus meines Vaters!
Then David spoke to the Lord when he saw the angel who was striking the people, and said, “Surely I have sinned, and I have done wickedly; but these sheep, what have they done? Let Your hand, I pray, be against me and against my father’s house.”
Am gleichen Tag kam Gad zu David und sagte zu ihm: Geh hinauf und errichte dem HERRN auf der Tenne des Jebusiters Arauna einen Altar!
The Altar on the Threshing Floor
And Gad came that day to David and said to him, “Go up, erect an altar to the Lord on the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite.”
And Gad came that day to David and said to him, “Go up, erect an altar to the Lord on the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite.”
David ging hinauf, wie es Gad gesagt und der HERR befohlen hatte.
So David, according to the word of Gad, went up as the Lord commanded.
Arauna hielt gerade Ausschau und sah den König mit seinen Dienern kommen. Er ging hinaus, warf sich vor dem König mit dem Gesicht zur Erde nieder
Now Araunah looked, and saw the king and his servants coming toward him. So Araunah went out and bowed before the king with his face to the ground.
und sagte: Warum kommt mein Herr, der König, zu seinem Knecht? David antwortete: Um von dir die Tenne zu kaufen und dem HERRN einen Altar zu errichten, damit die Plage im Volk aufhört.
Then Araunah said, “Why has my lord the king come to his servant?”
And David said, “To buy the threshing floor from you, to build an altar to the Lord, that the plague may be withdrawn from the people.”
And David said, “To buy the threshing floor from you, to build an altar to the Lord, that the plague may be withdrawn from the people.”
Arauna antwortete David: Mein Herr, der König, möge alles nehmen, was er für gut findet, und es als Brandopfer darbringen. Sieh her, hier sind die Rinder für das Brandopfer und die Dreschschlitten und das Geschirr der Rinder als Brennholz.
Now Araunah said to David, “Let my lord the king take and offer up whatever seems good to him. Look, here are oxen for burnt sacrifice, and threshing implements and the yokes of the oxen for wood.
Das alles gab König Arauna dem König. Dann sagte Arauna zum König: Der HERR, dein Gott, sei dir gnädig.
All these, O king, Araunah has given to the king.”
And Araunah said to the king, “May the Lord your God accept you.”
And Araunah said to the king, “May the Lord your God accept you.”
Der König erwiderte Arauna: Nein, ich will es dir gegen Bezahlung abkaufen; ich will dem HERRN, meinem Gott, keine unbezahlten Brandopfer darbringen. David kaufte also die Tenne und die Rinder für fünfzig Silberschekel.
Then the king said to Araunah, “No, but I will surely buy it from you for a price; nor will I offer burnt offerings to the Lord my God with that which costs me nothing.” So David bought the threshing floor and the oxen for fifty shekels of silver.
Und er baute dort einen Altar für den HERRN und brachte Brandopfer und Heilsopfer dar; der HERR aber ließ sich um des Landes willen erbitten und die Plage hörte auf in Israel.
And David built there an altar to the Lord, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings. So the Lord heeded the prayers for the land, and the plague was withdrawn from Israel.
