Fair Treatment of Slaves
“These are the regulations you must present to Israel.

Wenn du einen hebräischen Sklaven kaufst, soll er sechs Jahre Sklave bleiben, im siebten Jahr soll er ohne Entgelt als freier Mann entlassen werden.
“If you buy a Hebrew slave, he may serve for no more than six years. Set him free in the seventh year, and he will owe you nothing for his freedom.
Ist er allein gekommen, soll er allein gehen. War er verheiratet, soll seine Frau mitgehen.
If he was single when he became your slave, he shall leave single. But if he was married before he became a slave, then his wife must be freed with him.
Hat ihm sein Herr eine Frau gegeben und hat sie ihm Söhne oder Töchter geboren, dann gehören Frau und Kinder ihrem Herrn und er muss allein gehen.
“If his master gave him a wife while he was a slave and they had sons or daughters, then only the man will be free in the seventh year, but his wife and children will still belong to his master.
Erklärt aber der Sklave: Ich liebe meinen Herrn, meine Frau und meine Kinder und will nicht als freier Mann fortgehen,
But the slave may declare, ‘I love my master, my wife, and my children. I don’t want to go free.’
dann soll ihn sein Herr vor Gott bringen, er soll ihn an die Tür oder an den Torpfosten bringen und ihm das Ohr mit einem Pfriem durchbohren; dann bleibt er für immer sein Sklave.
Wenn einer seine Tochter als Sklavin verkauft hat, soll sie nicht wie andere Sklaven entlassen werden.
“When a man sells his daughter as a slave, she will not be freed at the end of six years as the men are.
Mag sie der Herr nicht mehr, der sie für sich selbst bestimmt hat, dann soll er sie zurückkaufen lassen. Er hat nicht das Recht, sie an Fremde zu verkaufen, da er seine Zusage nicht eingehalten hat.
If she does not satisfy her owner, he must allow her to be bought back again. But he is not allowed to sell her to foreigners, since he is the one who broke the contract with her.
Hat er sie für seinen Sohn bestimmt, verfahre er mit ihr nach dem Recht, das für Töchter gilt.
But if the slave’s owner arranges for her to marry his son, he may no longer treat her as a slave but as a daughter.
Nimmt er sich noch eine andere Frau, darf er sie in Nahrung, Kleidung und Beischlaf nicht benachteiligen.
“If a man who has married a slave wife takes another wife for himself, he must not neglect the rights of the first wife to food, clothing, and sexual intimacy.

If he fails in any of these three obligations, she may leave as a free woman without making any payment.
Wer einen Menschen so schlägt, dass er stirbt, hat den Tod verdient.
Cases of Personal Injury
“Anyone who assaults and kills another person must be put to death.
Wenn er ihm aber nicht aufgelauert hat, sondern Gott es durch seine Hand geschehen ließ, werde ich dir einen Ort festsetzen, an den er fliehen kann.
But if it was simply an accident permitted by God, I will appoint a place of refuge where the slayer can run for safety.
Hat einer vorsätzlich gehandelt und seinen Mitbürger aus dem Hinterhalt umgebracht, sollst du ihn von meinem Altar wegholen, damit er stirbt.
However, if someone deliberately kills another person, then the slayer must be dragged even from my altar and be put to death.
Wer seinen Vater oder seine Mutter schlägt, hat den Tod verdient.
“Anyone who strikes father or mother must be put to death.
Wer einen Menschen raubt, gleichgültig, ob er ihn verkauft hat oder ob man ihn noch in seiner Hand vorfindet, hat den Tod verdient.
“Kidnappers must be put to death, whether they are caught in possession of their victims or have already sold them as slaves.
Wer seinen Vater oder seine Mutter verflucht, hat den Tod verdient.
Wenn Männer in Streit geraten und einer den andern mit einem Stein oder einer Hacke verletzt, sodass er zwar nicht stirbt, aber bettlägerig wird,
“Now suppose two men quarrel, and one hits the other with a stone or fist, and the injured person does not die but is confined to bed.
später wieder aufstehen und mit Krücken draußen umhergehen kann, so ist der freizusprechen, der geschlagen hat; nur für die Arbeitsunfähigkeit des Geschädigten muss er Ersatz leisten und er muss für die Heilung aufkommen.
If he is later able to walk outside again, even with a crutch, the assailant will not be punished but must compensate his victim for lost wages and provide for his full recovery.
Wenn einer seinen Sklaven oder seine Sklavin mit dem Stock so schlägt, dass er unter seiner Hand stirbt, dann muss er unbedingt gerächt werden.
“If a man beats his male or female slave with a club and the slave dies as a result, the owner must be punished.
Wenn er noch einen oder zwei Tage am Leben bleibt, dann soll den Täter keine Rache treffen; es geht ja um sein eigenes Geld.
But if the slave recovers within a day or two, then the owner shall not be punished, since the slave is his property.
Wenn Männer miteinander raufen und dabei eine schwangere Frau treffen, sodass ihre Kinder abgehen, ohne dass ein weiterer Schaden entsteht, dann muss der Täter eine Buße zahlen, die ihm der Ehemann der Frau auferlegt; er muss die Zahlung nach dem Urteil von Schiedsrichtern leisten.
Ist weiterer Schaden entstanden, dann musst du geben: Leben für Leben,
But if there is further injury, the punishment must match the injury: a life for a life,

Wenn einer seinem Sklaven oder seiner Sklavin ein Auge ausschlägt, soll er ihn für das ausgeschlagene Auge freilassen.
“If a man hits his male or female slave in the eye and the eye is blinded, he must let the slave go free to compensate for the eye.
Wenn er seinem Sklaven oder seiner Sklavin einen Zahn ausschlägt, soll er ihn für den ausgeschlagenen Zahn freilassen.
And if a man knocks out the tooth of his male or female slave, he must let the slave go free to compensate for the tooth.
Wenn ein Rind einen Mann oder eine Frau so stößt, dass der Betreffende stirbt, dann muss man das Rind steinigen und sein Fleisch darf man nicht essen; der Eigentümer des Rinds aber bleibt straffrei.
Hat das Rind aber schon früher gestoßen und hat der Eigentümer, obwohl man ihn darauf aufmerksam gemacht hat, auf das Tier nicht aufgepasst, sodass es einen Mann oder eine Frau getötet hat, dann soll man das Rind steinigen und auch sein Eigentümer muss sterben.
But suppose the ox had a reputation for goring, and the owner had been informed but failed to keep it under control. If the ox then kills someone, it must be stoned, and the owner must also be put to death.
Will man ihm stattdessen eine Sühneleistung auferlegen, soll er als Lösegeld für sein Leben so viel geben, wie man von ihm fordert.
However, the dead person’s relatives may accept payment to compensate for the loss of life. The owner of the ox may redeem his life by paying whatever is demanded.
Stößt das Rind einen Sohn oder eine Tochter, verfahre man nach dem gleichen Recht.
“The same regulation applies if the ox gores a boy or a girl.
Stößt das Rind einen Sklaven oder eine Sklavin, soll der Eigentümer dem Herrn dreißig Silberschekel zahlen; das Rind aber soll gesteinigt werden.
Wenn jemand einen Brunnen offen lässt oder einen Brunnen gräbt, ohne ihn abzudecken, und es fällt ein Rind oder ein Esel hinein,
“Suppose someone digs or uncovers a pit and fails to cover it, and then an ox or a donkey falls into it.

The owner of the pit must pay full compensation to the owner of the animal, but then he gets to keep the dead animal.

“If someone’s ox injures a neighbor’s ox and the injured ox dies, then the two owners must sell the live ox and divide the price equally between them. They must also divide the dead animal.
