Judah and Simeon Conquer the Land
After the death of Joshua, the Israelites asked the LORD, “Which tribe should go first to attack the Canaanites?”

Der HERR antwortete: Juda soll hinaufziehen; siehe, ich gebe das Land in seine Hand.
The LORD answered, “Judah, for I have given them victory over the land.”
Da sagte Juda zu seinem Bruder Simeon: Zieh mit mir hinauf in das Gebiet, das mir durch das Los zugefallen ist; wir wollen gegen die Kanaaniter kämpfen. Dann werde auch ich mit dir in das Gebiet ziehen, das dir durch das Los zugefallen ist. Da ging Simeon mit ihm.
The men of Judah said to their relatives from the tribe of Simeon, “Join with us to fight against the Canaanites living in the territory allotted to us. Then we will help you conquer your territory.” So the men of Simeon went with Judah.
Juda zog hinauf und der HERR gab die Kanaaniter und die Perisiter in ihre Hand. Sie schlugen sie bei Besek, zehntausend Mann.
When the men of Judah attacked, the LORD gave them victory over the Canaanites and Perizzites, and they killed 10,000 enemy warriors at the town of Bezek.
Sie stießen bei Besek auf Adoni-Besek, kämpften mit ihm und schlugen die Kanaaniter und die Perisiter.
While at Bezek they encountered King Adoni-bezek and fought against him, and the Canaanites and Perizzites were defeated.
Adoni-Besek floh, aber sie verfolgten ihn, ergriffen ihn und hackten ihm die Daumen und die großen Zehen ab.
Adoni-bezek escaped, but the Israelites soon captured him and cut off his thumbs and big toes.
Da sagte Adoni-Besek: Siebzig Könige mit abgehackten Daumen und abgehackten großen Zehen haben unter meinem Tisch die Reste aufgelesen. Wie ich gehandelt habe, so hat mir Gott vergolten. Man brachte ihn nach Jerusalem und dort starb er.
Adoni-bezek said, “I once had seventy kings with their thumbs and big toes cut off, eating scraps from under my table. Now God has paid me back for what I did to them.” They took him to Jerusalem, and he died there.
Die Judäer kämpften gegen Jerusalem, nahmen es ein, schlugen die Stadt mit scharfem Schwert und steckten sie in Brand.
The men of Judah attacked Jerusalem and captured it, killing all its people and setting the city on fire.
Danach zogen die Judäer hinab, um gegen die Kanaaniter zu kämpfen, die im Gebirge, im Negeb und in der Schefela wohnten.
Juda zog gegen die Kanaaniter, die in Hebron wohnten — Hebron hieß früher Kirjat-Arba — , und sie schlugen Scheschai, Ahiman und Talmai.
Judah marched against the Canaanites in Hebron (formerly called Kiriath-arba), defeating the forces of Sheshai, Ahiman, and Talmai.
Von dort zogen sie weiter gegen die Einwohner von Debir. Debir hieß früher Kirjat-Sefer.
From there they went to fight against the people living in the town of Debir (formerly called Kiriath-sepher).
Da sagte Kaleb: Wer Kirjat-Sefer schlägt und einnimmt, dem gebe ich meine Tochter Achsa zur Frau.
Caleb said, “I will give my daughter Acsah in marriage to the one who attacks and captures Kiriath-sepher.”
Otniël, der Sohn des Kenas, der jüngere Bruder Kalebs, nahm die Stadt ein. Da gab ihm Kaleb seine Tochter Achsa zur Frau.
Othniel, the son of Caleb’s younger brother, Kenaz, was the one who conquered it, so Acsah became Othniel’s wife.
Als sie nun ankam, drängte sie ihn, von ihrem Vater das Stück Land zu verlangen. Da ließ sie sich vom Esel herabgleiten und Kaleb fragte sie: Was hast du?
Sie antwortete: Gib mir einen Segen! Wenn du mich schon ins Trockenland geschickt hast, dann gib mir auch Wasserstellen! Da gab Kaleb ihr die Obere und die Untere Quelle.
She said, “Let me have another gift. You have already given me land in the Negev; now please give me springs of water, too.” So Caleb gave her the upper and lower springs.
Die Söhne des Keni, des Schwiegervaters des Mose, waren mit den Judäern von der Palmenstadt zur Wüste Juda südlich von Arad hinaufgezogen; er ging hin und wohnte bei dem Volk.
When the tribe of Judah left Jericho — the city of palms — the Kenites, who were descendants of Moses’ father-in-law, traveled with them into the wilderness of Judah. They settled among the people there, near the town of Arad in the Negev.
Juda aber zog mit seinem Bruder Simeon weiter. Sie schlugen die Kanaaniter, die in Zefat wohnten, und vollzogen den Bann an ihr. Man nannte den Namen der Stadt Horma.
Juda eroberte Gaza und sein Gebiet, Aschkelon und sein Gebiet und Ekron und sein Gebiet.
In addition, Judah captured the towns of Gaza, Ashkelon, and Ekron, along with their surrounding territories.
Der HERR war mit Juda, sodass es das Bergland in Besitz nehmen konnte. Aber die Bewohner der Ebene waren nicht zu vertreiben, weil sie eiserne Kampfwagen hatten.
Israel Fails to Conquer the Land
The LORD was with the people of Judah, and they took possession of the hill country. But they failed to drive out the people living in the plains, who had iron chariots.
Dem Kaleb gab man Hebron, wie Mose es angeordnet hatte; er vertrieb von dort die drei Söhne Anaks.
The town of Hebron was given to Caleb as Moses had promised. And Caleb drove out the people living there, who were descendants of the three sons of Anak.
Die Benjaminiter vertrieben die Jebusiter, die in Jerusalem wohnten, nicht und so blieben die Jebusiter bei den Benjaminitern in Jerusalem wohnen bis auf den heutigen Tag.
The tribe of Benjamin, however, failed to drive out the Jebusites, who were living in Jerusalem. So to this day the Jebusites live in Jerusalem among the people of Benjamin.
Das Haus Josef zog seinerseits hinauf nach Bet-El. Und der HERR war mit ihnen.
The descendants of Joseph attacked the town of Bethel, and the LORD was with them.
Das Haus Josef ließ Bet-El auskundschaften. Die Stadt hieß früher Lus.
They sent men to scout out Bethel (formerly known as Luz).
Als die Wächter einen Mann aus der Stadt herauskommen sahen, sagten sie zu ihm: Zeig uns den Zugang zur Stadt, dann werden wir dir unser Wohlwollen beweisen.
They confronted a man coming out of the town and said to him, “Show us a way into the town, and we will have mercy on you.”
Er zeigte ihnen den Zugang zur Stadt und sie schlugen die Stadt mit scharfem Schwert. Den Mann aber und seine ganze Sippe ließen sie gehen.
So he showed them a way in, and they killed everyone in the town except that man and his family.
Der Mann ging in das Land der Hetiter, erbaute eine Stadt und nannte sie Lus. Das ist ihr Name bis auf den heutigen Tag.
Later the man moved to the land of the Hittites, where he built a town. He named it Luz, which is its name to this day.
Manasse vertrieb nicht Bet-Schean und seine Tochterstädte sowie Taanach und seine Tochterstädte, die Einwohner von Dor und seine Tochterstädte, die Einwohner von Jibleam und seine Tochterstädte und die Einwohner von Megiddo und seine Tochterstädte. So gelang es den Kanaanitern, in dieser Gegend zu bleiben.
Als Israel stark geworden war, zwang es die Kanaaniter zur Fron, aber sie hatten sie nicht vertrieben.
When the Israelites grew stronger, they forced the Canaanites to work as slaves, but they never did drive them completely out of the land.
Efraim vertrieb die Kanaaniter nicht, die in Geser wohnten. Darum blieben die Kanaaniter mitten unter ihnen in Geser wohnen.
The tribe of Ephraim failed to drive out the Canaanites living in Gezer, so the Canaanites continued to live there among them.
Sebulon vertrieb die Einwohner von Kitron und die Einwohner von Nahalol nicht. Darum blieben die Kanaaniter mitten unter ihnen wohnen, aber sie wurden Fronarbeiter.
The tribe of Zebulun failed to drive out the residents of Kitron and Nahalol, so the Canaanites continued to live among them. But the Canaanites were forced to work as slaves for the people of Zebulun.
Ascher vertrieb die Einwohner von Akko und die Einwohner von Sidon nicht, auch nicht von Achlab, Achsib, Helba, Afek und Roheb.
The tribe of Asher failed to drive out the residents of Acco, Sidon, Ahlab, Aczib, Helbah, Aphik, and Rehob.
Darum wohnten die Ascheriter mitten unter den Kanaanitern, die in der Gegend wohnen blieben, weil sie diese nicht vertrieben hatten.
Instead, the people of Asher moved in among the Canaanites, who controlled the land, for they failed to drive them out.
Naftali vertrieb die Einwohner von Bet-Schemesch und die Einwohner von Bet-Anat nicht und wohnte deshalb mitten unter den Kanaanitern, die in der Gegend wohnen blieben. Die Einwohner von Bet-Schemesch und Bet-Anat aber wurden Fronarbeiter.
Likewise, the tribe of Naphtali failed to drive out the residents of Beth-shemesh and Beth-anath. Instead, they moved in among the Canaanites, who controlled the land. Nevertheless, the people of Beth-shemesh and Beth-anath were forced to work as slaves for the people of Naphtali.
Die Amoriter drängten die Daniter ins Bergland ab, denn sie ließen sie nicht in die Ebene herabkommen.
As for the tribe of Dan, the Amorites forced them back into the hill country and would not let them come down into the plains.
Es gelang den Amoritern, in Har-Heres, Ajalon und Schaalbim zu bleiben. Die Hand des Hauses Josef lag aber schwer auf ihnen und sie wurden Fronarbeiter.
The Amorites were determined to stay in Mount Heres, Aijalon, and Shaalbim, but when the descendants of Joseph became stronger, they forced the Amorites to work as slaves.
