Saul wählte sich dreitausend Mann aus Israel aus; zweitausend davon waren bei Saul in Michmas und auf dem Berg von Bet-El und tausend waren bei Jonatan in Gibea-Benjamin. Den Rest des Volkes entließ er, jeden zu seinem Zelt.
Now Saul chose for himself 3,000 men of Israel, of which 2,000 were with Saul in Michmash and in the hill country of Bethel, while 1,000 were with Jonathan at Gibeah of Benjamin. But he sent away the rest of the people, each to his tent.
Jonatan erschlug den Vogt der Philister, der in Geba saß; die Philister hörten davon. Saul aber ließ im ganzen Land das Widderhorn blasen und ausrufen: Die Hebräer sollen es hören.
Jonathan smote the garrison of the Philistines that was in Geba, and the Philistines heard of it. Then Saul blew the trumpet throughout the land, saying, “Let the Hebrews hear.”
Und ganz Israel hörte die Kunde: Saul hat den Vogt der Philister erschlagen und dadurch hat sich Israel bei den Philistern verhasst gemacht. Das Volk wurde aufgeboten, Saul nach Gilgal zu folgen.
All Israel heard the news that Saul had smitten the garrison of the Philistines, and also that Israel had become odious to the Philistines. The people were then summoned to Saul at Gilgal.
Die Philister versammelten sich zum Kampf gegen Israel; sie hatten dreitausend Wagen und sechstausend Wagenkämpfer und ein Heer so zahlreich wie der Sand am Ufer des Meeres. Sie zogen herauf und schlugen bei Michmas, östlich von Bet-Awen, ihr Lager auf.
Now the Philistines assembled to fight with Israel, 30,000 chariots and 6,000 horsemen, and people like the sand which is on the seashore in abundance; and they came up and camped in Michmash, east of Beth-aven.
Als die Israeliten sahen, dass sie in Gefahr gerieten und dass das Volk bedrängt wurde, versteckten sie sich in Höhlen, Schlupflöchern, Felsspalten, Gruben und Zisternen.
When the men of Israel saw that they were in a strait (for the people were hard-pressed), then the people hid themselves in caves, in thickets, in cliffs, in cellars, and in pits.
Einige Hebräer gingen über den Jordan in das Land Gad und Gilead. Saul war noch in Gilgal und das ganze Volk, das ihm gefolgt war, hatte große Angst.
Also some of the Hebrews crossed the Jordan into the land of Gad and Gilead. But as for Saul, he was still in Gilgal, and all the people followed him trembling.
Er wartete in Gilgal sieben Tage auf Samuel, wie vereinbart, aber Samuel kam nicht. Als ihm nun das Volk davonlief,
Now he waited seven days, according to the appointed time set by Samuel, but Samuel did not come to Gilgal; and the people were scattering from him.
sagte Saul: Bringt das Brandopfer und die Heilsopfer zu mir her! Und er brachte das Opfer dar.
So Saul said, “Bring to me the burnt offering and the peace offerings.” And he offered the burnt offering.
Gerade als er mit der Darbringung des Opfers fertig war, kam Samuel. Saul ging ihm entgegen, um ihn zu begrüßen.
As soon as he finished offering the burnt offering, behold, Samuel came; and Saul went out to meet him and to greet him.
Samuel aber fragte: Was hast du getan? Saul antwortete: Weil ich sah, dass mir das Volk davonlief und du nicht zu dem vereinbarten Zeitpunkt gekommen bist und die Philister sich bei Michmas versammelt haben,
But Samuel said, “What have you done?” And Saul said, “Because I saw that the people were scattering from me, and that you did not come within the appointed days, and that the Philistines were assembling at Michmash,
dachte ich: Jetzt werden die Philister gegen mich nach Gilgal herabziehen, noch ehe ich den HERRN gnädig gestimmt habe. Darum habe ich es gewagt, das Brandopfer darzubringen.
therefore I said, ‘Now the Philistines will come down against me at Gilgal, and I have not asked the favor of the LORD.’ So I forced myself and offered the burnt offering.”
Samuel erwiderte Saul: Du hast töricht gehandelt: Hättest du das Gebot bewahrt, das dir der HERR, dein Gott, gegeben hat, dann hätte er jetzt deine Herrschaft über Israel für immer gefestigt.
Samuel said to Saul, “You have acted foolishly; you have not kept the commandment of the LORD your God, which He commanded you, for now the LORD would have established your kingdom over Israel forever.
Nun aber wird deine Herrschaft keinen Bestand haben. Der HERR hat sich einen Mann nach seinem Herzen gesucht und ihn zum Fürsten seines Volkes gemacht. Denn du hast nicht bewahrt, was der HERR dir geboten hat.
“But now your kingdom shall not endure. The LORD has sought out for Himself a man after His own heart, and the LORD has appointed him as ruler over His people, because you have not kept what the LORD commanded you.”
Danach brach Samuel auf und ging von Gilgal nach Gibea-Benjamin hinauf. Saul musterte das Volk, das noch bei ihm war; es waren etwa sechshundert Mann.
Then Samuel arose and went up from Gilgal to Gibeah of Benjamin. And Saul numbered the people who were present with him, about six hundred men.
Saul, sein Sohn Jonatan und die Leute, die noch bei ihnen waren, standen bei Geba-Benjamin, während die Philister ihr Lager bei Michmas hatten.
Now Saul and his son Jonathan and the people who were present with them were staying in Geba of Benjamin while the Philistines camped at Michmash.
Da zogen aus dem Lager der Philister drei Abteilungen aus, um zu plündern. Eine Abteilung wandte sich in Richtung Ofra im Gebiet von Schual;
And the raiders came from the camp of the Philistines in three companies: one company turned toward Ophrah, to the land of Shual,
die zweite Abteilung zog in Richtung Bet-Horon und die dritte Abteilung wandte sich in Richtung auf den Hügel, der über das Hyänental weg in die Wüste hinüberschaut.
and another company turned toward Beth-horon, and another company turned toward the border which overlooks the valley of Zeboim toward the wilderness.
Damals war im ganzen Land kein Schmied zu finden. Denn die Philister hatten sich gesagt: Die Hebräer sollen sich keine Schwerter und Lanzen machen können.
Now no blacksmith could be found in all the land of Israel, for the Philistines said, “Otherwise the Hebrews will make swords or spears.”
Alle Israeliten gingen zu den Philistern hinab, wenn jemand sich eine Pflugschar, eine Hacke, eine Axt oder eine Sichel schmieden lassen wollte.
So all Israel went down to the Philistines, each to sharpen his plowshare, his mattock, his axe, and his hoe.
Der Preis für das Schärfen der Pflugscharen, der Hacken, des Dreizacks und der Äxte und das Einsetzen des Ochsenstachels betrug ein Pim.
The charge was two-thirds of a shekel for the plowshares, the mattocks, the forks, and the axes, and to fix the hoes.
Als es nun zum Krieg kam, fand sich im ganzen Volk, das bei Saul und Jonatan war, weder ein Schwert noch ein Speer. Es gab sie nur bei Saul und seinem Sohn Jonatan.
So it came about on the day of battle that neither sword nor spear was found in the hands of any of the people who were with Saul and Jonathan, but they were found with Saul and his son Jonathan.
