Abraham wohnte bei den Eichen von Mamre, da erschien ihm der HERR wieder. Es war um die heißeste Zeit des Tages, und Abraham saß gerade am Eingang seines Zeltes.
Als er aufblickte, bemerkte er plötzlich drei Männer, die ganz in der Nähe standen. Sofort sprang er auf, lief zu ihnen hinüber, verneigte sich bis zur Erde und bat:
So he lifted his eyes and looked, and behold, three men were standing by him; and when he saw them, he ran from the tent door to meet them, and bowed himself to the ground,
»Herr, bitte schenk mir deine Aufmerksamkeit und geh nicht einfach weiter! Ich lasse Wasser holen für eure Füße, ruht euch solange unter dem Baum aus; ich sorge für das Essen, damit ihr gestärkt weitergehen könnt! Ihr sollt nicht umsonst bei mir vorbeigekommen sein!« »Einverstanden«, sagten die drei, »tu, was du dir vorgenommen hast!«
and said, “My Lord, if I have now found favor in Your sight, do not pass on by Your servant.
Abraham lief ins Zelt zurück und rief Sara zu: »Schnell! Nimm 15 Kilo vom besten Mehl, das wir haben, rühr einen Teig an und backe Fladenbrote!«
So Abraham hurried into the tent to Sarah and said, “Quickly, make ready three measures of fine meal; knead it and make cakes.”
Er lief weiter zu seiner Rinderherde, wählte ein zartes, gesundes Kalb aus und befahl seinem Knecht, es so schnell wie möglich zuzubereiten.
And Abraham ran to the herd, took a tender and good calf, gave it to a young man, and he hastened to prepare it.
Den fertigen Braten bot er dann seinen Gästen mit Sauerrahm und Milch an. Sie saßen im Schatten des Baums, und während sie aßen, stand Abraham daneben und bediente sie.
So he took butter and milk and the calf which he had prepared, and set it before them; and he stood by them under the tree as they ate.
»Wo ist denn deine Frau Sara?«, fragten sie ihn. »Hier im Zelt«, antwortete Abraham.
Then they said to him, “Where is Sarah your wife?”
So he said, “Here, in the tent.”
So he said, “Here, in the tent.”
Da sagte einer der Männer: »Glaub mir, nächstes Jahr um diese Zeit komme ich wieder zu euch, und dann wird Sara einen Sohn haben.« Sara stand hinter ihnen im Zelteingang und lauschte.
And He said, “I will certainly return to you according to the time of life, and behold, Sarah your wife shall have a son.”

Sie lachte heimlich. Denn Abraham und sie waren beide hochbetagt, und Sara konnte gar keine Kinder mehr bekommen. Darum dachte sie: »Ich bin alt und verbraucht, und meinem Mann geht es genauso. Wir werden uns wohl nie mehr über ein Kind freuen können. Nein, die Zeiten sind längst vorbei!«
Da sagte der HERR zu Abraham: »Warum lacht Sara? Warum zweifelt sie an meinen Worten, dass sie noch ein Kind bekommen wird?
And the Lord said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh, saying, ‘Shall I surely bear a child, since I am old?’
Für mich ist nichts unmöglich! Nächstes Jahr um diese Zeit komme ich wieder zu euch — dann wird Sara einen Sohn haben.«
Is anything too hard for the Lord? At the appointed time I will return to you, according to the time of life, and Sarah shall have a son.”
Sara fürchtete sich und log: »Ich habe nicht gelacht!« Aber Gott erwiderte ihr: »Doch, du hast gelacht!«
But Sarah denied it, saying, “I did not laugh,” for she was afraid.
And He said, “No, but you did laugh!”
And He said, “No, but you did laugh!”
Danach brachen die drei auf, und Abraham begleitete sie noch ein Stück. Als sie auf die Stadt Sodom hinabblickten,

fragte sich der HERR: »Soll ich wirklich vor Abraham verbergen, was ich mit Sodom und Gomorra vorhabe?
And the Lord said, “Shall I hide from Abraham what I am doing,
Nein, ich will es ihm nicht vorenthalten, schließlich wird er durch mich zum Stammvater eines großen und mächtigen Volkes. Und nicht nur das, alle Völker der Erde sollen durch ihn am Segen teilhaben.
since Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him?
Ich selbst habe ihn dazu auserwählt, dass er auch seine Familie und seine Nachkommen so zu leben lehrt, wie es mir gefällt. Sie sollen das Recht achten und Gerechtigkeit üben, damit ich meine Zusage einlösen kann, die ich Abraham gegeben habe.«
For I have known him, in order that he may command his children and his household after him, that they keep the way of the Lord, to do righteousness and justice, that the Lord may bring to Abraham what He has spoken to him.”
Darum sagte der HERR zu Abraham: »Die Klagen über die Menschen von Sodom und Gomorra nehmen kein Ende; ihre Schuld schreit zum Himmel!
And the Lord said, “Because the outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and because their sin is very grave,
Ich gehe jetzt dorthin, um selbst nachzusehen. Ich will wissen, ob die Vorwürfe stimmen und die Leute es wirklich so schlimm treiben, wie ich gehört habe.«
I will go down now and see whether they have done altogether according to the outcry against it that has come to Me; and if not, I will know.”
Die beiden Begleiter gingen weiter in Richtung Sodom, nur der HERR blieb noch mit Abraham zurück.
Then the men turned away from there and went toward Sodom, but Abraham still stood before the Lord.
Abraham trat näher heran und fragte: »Willst du wirklich rechtschaffene und gottlose Menschen zusammen vernichten?
And Abraham came near and said, “Would You also destroy the righteous with the wicked?
Vielleicht findest du ja fünfzig Leute in der Stadt, die nichts Böses getan haben und dir dienen. Willst du die Stadt nicht um ihretwillen verschonen?
Suppose there were fifty righteous within the city; would You also destroy the place and not spare it for the fifty righteous that were in it?
Lass nicht zu, dass der Schuldlose genauso sterben muss wie der Schuldige! Es wäre nicht recht, beide gleich zu behandeln. Du bist der Richter der ganzen Welt und kannst doch nicht gegen die Gerechtigkeit verstoßen!«
Far be it from You to do such a thing as this, to slay the righteous with the wicked, so that the righteous should be as the wicked; far be it from You! Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?”
Da erwiderte der HERR: »Wenn ich in Sodom fünfzig Menschen finde, die so leben, wie es mir gefällt, werde ich um ihretwillen den ganzen Ort verschonen.«
So the Lord said, “If I find in Sodom fifty righteous within the city, then I will spare all the place for their sakes.”
Abraham aber ließ nicht locker: »Ich habe es nun einmal gewagt, mich einzumischen, obwohl ich nur ein vergänglicher Mensch bin, nicht viel mehr als Staub und Asche.
Then Abraham answered and said, “Indeed now, I who am but dust and ashes have taken it upon myself to speak to the Lord:
Angenommen, es gibt bloß fünfundvierzig Menschen, die kein Unrecht getan haben. Willst du wegen der fehlenden fünf die ganze Stadt zerstören?« »Nein«, bekam er zur Antwort, »wenn ich fünfundvierzig finde, verschone ich die Stadt.«
Suppose there were five less than the fifty righteous; would You destroy all of the city for lack of five?”
So He said, “If I find there forty-five, I will not destroy it.”
So He said, “If I find there forty-five, I will not destroy it.”
Abraham tastete sich noch weiter vor: »Und wenn es nur vierzig sind?« Gott versprach: »Auch dann vernichte ich die Stadt nicht.«
And he spoke to Him yet again and said, “Suppose there should be forty found there?”
So He said, “I will not do it for the sake of forty.”
So He said, “I will not do it for the sake of forty.”
»Bitte werde nicht zornig, wenn ich weiterrede«, bat Abraham, »vielleicht gibt es nur dreißig dort?« »Selbst dann werde ich es nicht tun.«
Then he said, “Let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak: Suppose thirty should be found there?”
So He said, “I will not do it if I find thirty there.”
So He said, “I will not do it if I find thirty there.”
Abraham setzte zum fünften Mal an: »Ich habe es nun einmal gewagt, Herr, mich einzumischen! Angenommen, es sind nur zwanzig?« Gott antwortete: »Dann werde ich die Stadt trotzdem verschonen.«
And he said, “Indeed now, I have taken it upon myself to speak to the Lord: Suppose twenty should be found there?”
So He said, “I will not destroy it for the sake of twenty.”
So He said, “I will not destroy it for the sake of twenty.”
»Mein Herr«, sagte Abraham, »bitte werde nicht zornig, wenn ich zum Schluss noch einmal spreche: Was wirst du tun, wenn dort nur zehn unschuldige Menschen wohnen?« Wieder versprach Gott ihm: »Die zehn werden verschont bleiben und ebenso die ganze Stadt.«
Then he said, “Let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak but once more: Suppose ten should be found there?”
And He said, “I will not destroy it for the sake of ten.”
And He said, “I will not destroy it for the sake of ten.”
