Der HERR sandte den Propheten Nathan zu David. Als Nathan vor dem König stand, sagte er zu ihm: »Ich muss dir etwas erzählen: Ein reicher und ein armer Mann lebten in derselben Stadt.

Eines Tages bekam der reiche Mann Besuch. Er wollte seinem Gast, der einen weiten Weg hinter sich hatte, etwas zu essen anbieten. David wurde vom Zorn gepackt und brauste auf: »So wahr der HERR lebt: Dieser Mann hat den Tod verdient!
Then David’s anger burned greatly against the man, and he said to Nathan, “As the LORD lives, surely the man who has done this deserves to die.
Dem Armen soll er vier Lämmer geben für das eine, das er ihm rücksichtslos weggenommen hat.«
“He must make restitution for the lamb fourfold, because he did this thing and had no compassion.”
Da sagte Nathan zu David: »Du bist dieser Mann! Der HERR, der Gott Israels, lässt dir sagen: ›Ich habe dich zum König von Israel erwählt und dich beschützt, als Saul dich umbringen wollte.
Nathan then said to David, “You are the man! Thus says the LORD God of Israel, ‘It is I who anointed you king over Israel and it is I who delivered you from the hand of Saul.
Den gesamten Reichtum Sauls und auch seine Frauen habe ich dir gegeben. Ganz Israel und Juda gehören dir. Und sollte dir das noch zu wenig sein, würde ich dir sogar noch mehr schenken.
‘I also gave you your master’s house and your master’s wives into your care, and I gave you the house of Israel and Judah; and if that had been too little, I would have added to you many more things like these!
Warum also missachtest du meinen Willen? Warum hast du getan, was ich verabscheue? Den Hetiter Uria hast du ermordet und dann seine Frau geheiratet. Ja, du, David, bist der Mörder Urias, denn du hast angeordnet, dass Uria im Kampf gegen die Ammoniter fallen sollte!
‘Why have you despised the word of the LORD by doing evil in His sight? You have struck down Uriah the Hittite with the sword, have taken his wife to be your wife, and have killed him with the sword of the sons of Ammon.
Du hast dich mir widersetzt und Uria die Frau weggenommen. Darum soll dein Königshaus von nun an immer wieder das Schwert zu spüren bekommen.
‘Now therefore, the sword shall never depart from your house, because you have despised Me and have taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your wife.’
Ich, der HERR, sage dir: Jemand aus deiner eigenen Familie wird dich ins Unglück stürzen. Ich selbst werde dafür sorgen. Du musst erleben, wie ein Mann, der dir sehr nahesteht, dir deine Frauen wegnimmt und in aller Öffentlichkeit mit ihnen schläft.
“Thus says the LORD, ‘Behold, I will raise up evil against you from your own household; I will even take your wives before your eyes and give them to your companion, and he will lie with your wives in broad daylight.
Was du, David, heimlich getan hast, das lasse ich am helllichten Tag geschehen. Ganz Israel soll Zeuge sein.‹«

Da bekannte David: »Ich habe gegen den HERRN gesündigt.« Nathan erwiderte: »Der HERR hat dir vergeben, du wirst nicht sterben.
Then David said to Nathan, “I have sinned against the LORD.” And Nathan said to David, “The LORD also has taken away your sin; you shall not die.
Doch wegen deiner Tat spotten die Feinde Gottes noch mehr über ihn. Darum muss der Sohn, den Batseba dir geboren hat, sterben.«
“However, because by this deed you have given occasion to the enemies of the LORD to blaspheme, the child also that is born to you shall surely die.”
Nach diesen Worten ging Nathan wieder nach Hause. Der HERR ließ das Kind, das Urias Frau geboren hatte, todkrank werden.

David zog sich zurück, um für seinen Sohn zu beten. Er fastete tagelang und schlief nachts auf dem Fußboden.
David therefore inquired of God for the child; and David fasted and went and lay all night on the ground.
Seine Hofbeamten kamen und versuchten, ihn zum Aufstehen zu bewegen, doch ohne Erfolg. Auch zum Essen ließ er sich nicht überreden.
The elders of his household stood beside him in order to raise him up from the ground, but he was unwilling and would not eat food with them.
Am siebten Tag starb das Kind. Keiner der Diener wagte es, David mitzuteilen, denn sie befürchteten das Schlimmste. »Schon als das Kind noch lebte, ließ er sich durch nichts aufmuntern«, sagten sie zueinander. »Wie wird er sich erst verhalten, wenn er erfährt, dass es tot ist? Er könnte sich etwas antun!«
Then it happened on the seventh day that the child died. And the servants of David were afraid to tell him that the child was dead, for they said, “Behold, while the child was still alive, we spoke to him and he did not listen to our voice. How then can we tell him that the child is dead, since he might do himself harm!”
Doch als David merkte, wie die Hofleute miteinander flüsterten, ahnte er, was geschehen war. »Ist der Junge tot?«, fragte er, und sie antworteten: »Ja, er ist gestorben.«
But when David saw that his servants were whispering together, David perceived that the child was dead; so David said to his servants, “Is the child dead?” And they said, “He is dead.”
Da stand David auf, wusch sich, pflegte sich mit wohlriechenden Salben und zog frische Kleider an. Dann ging er ins Heiligtum und warf sich nieder, um den HERRN anzubeten. Danach kehrte er in den Palast zurück und ließ sich etwas zu essen bringen.
So David arose from the ground, washed, anointed himself, and changed his clothes; and he came into the house of the LORD and worshiped. Then he came to his own house, and when he requested, they set food before him and he ate.
»Wir verstehen dich nicht«, sagten seine Diener, »als das Kind noch lebte, hast du seinetwegen gefastet und geweint. Doch jetzt, wo es gestorben ist, stehst du auf und isst wieder.«
Then his servants said to him, “What is this thing that you have done? While the child was alive, you fasted and wept; but when the child died, you arose and ate food.”
David erwiderte: »Solange mein Sohn lebte, habe ich gefastet und geweint, weil ich dachte: Vielleicht hat der HERR Erbarmen mit mir und lässt ihn am Leben.
He said, “While the child was still alive, I fasted and wept; for I said, ‘Who knows, the LORD may be gracious to me, that the child may live.’
Doch nun ist er gestorben — warum soll ich jetzt noch fasten? Kann ich ihn damit etwa zurückholen? Nein, er kehrt nicht mehr zu mir zurück, ich aber werde eines Tages zu ihm gehen!«
“But now he has died; why should I fast? Can I bring him back again? I will go to him, but he will not return to me.”
Dann ging David zu seiner Frau Batseba und tröstete sie. Er schlief mit ihr, und sie brachte wieder einen Sohn zur Welt. David nannte ihn Salomo (»der Friedliche«). Der HERR liebte das Kind,

Then David comforted his wife Bathsheba, and went in to her and lay with her; and she gave birth to a son, and he named him Solomon. Now the LORD loved him
darum gab er dem Propheten Nathan den Auftrag, hinzugehen und dem Jungen einen zweiten Namen zu geben: Jedidja (»Liebling des Herrn«).
and sent word through Nathan the prophet, and he named him Jedidiah for the LORD’S sake.
Noch immer belagerte Joab mit dem israelitischen Heer Rabba, die Hauptstadt der Ammoniter. Es gelang ihm, einen Bezirk zu erobern, der »Königsstadt« genannt wurde.
War Again
Now Joab fought against Rabbah of the sons of Ammon and captured the royal city.
Er schickte Boten zu David und ließ ihm ausrichten: »Ich habe Rabba angegriffen und nun schon die Wasserversorgung der Stadt unter Kontrolle gebracht.
Joab sent messengers to David and said, “I have fought against Rabbah, I have even captured the city of waters.
Darum sammle jetzt den Rest deines Heeres und stürme die Stadt. Du sollst sie einnehmen, nicht ich. Sonst werde ich als Eroberer gefeiert!«
“Now therefore, gather the rest of the people together and camp against the city and capture it, or I will capture the city myself and it will be named after me.”
Da zog David mit den übrigen Soldaten nach Rabba. Er griff die Stadt an und eroberte sie.
So David gathered all the people and went to Rabbah, fought against it and captured it.
Die Israeliten machten reiche Beute und schafften sie aus Rabba fort. David nahm König Hanun die Krone ab und setzte sie selbst auf. Sie wog 35 Kilogramm, war aus reinem Gold und mit einem kostbaren Edelstein besetzt.
Then he took the crown of their king from his head; and its weight was a talent of gold, and in it was a precious stone; and it was placed on David’s head. And he brought out the spoil of the city in great amounts.
Die Einwohner von Rabba verschleppte David und verurteilte sie zur Zwangsarbeit mit Steinsägen, eisernen Pickeln und Äxten; außerdem mussten sie Ziegel brennen. Ebenso erging es den Einwohnern der anderen ammonitischen Städte. Als der Krieg vorüber war, kehrten David und sein Heer nach Jerusalem zurück.
He also brought out the people who were in it, and set them under saws, sharp iron instruments, and iron axes, and made them pass through the brickkiln. And thus he did to all the cities of the sons of Ammon. Then David and all the people returned to Jerusalem.
