König David war sehr alt geworden. Obwohl seine Diener ihn in viele Decken hüllten, fror er ständig.

Abishag Cares for David

Now king David was old and stricken in years; and they covered him with clothes, but he gat no heat.

Da schlugen sie ihm vor: »Gestatte uns, dass wir für unseren Herrn, den König, eine junge, unberührte Frau suchen. Sie soll immer bei ihm sein und ihn liebevoll pflegen. Bestimmt wird dem König wieder warm, wenn sie in seinen Armen liegt.«

Wherefore his servants said unto him, Let there be sought for my lord the king a young virgin: and let her stand before the king, and let her cherish him, and let her lie in thy bosom, that my lord the king may get heat.

So suchte man in ganz Israel nach einem schönen Mädchen. Schließlich wurde Abischag, eine sehr schöne junge Frau aus Schunem, ausgewählt und zum König gebracht.

So they sought for a fair damsel throughout all the coasts of Israel, and found Abishag a Shunammite, and brought her to the king.

Abischag blieb von nun an immer bei ihm und pflegte ihn. Doch David schlief nicht mit ihr.

And the damsel was very fair, and cherished the king, and ministered to him: but the king knew her not.

Von seiner Frau Haggit hatte David einen Sohn namens Adonija. Er war ein Halbbruder von Absalom und nach dessen Tod Davids ältester Sohn. Er war ein schöner junger Mann. Von Kind auf hatte sein Vater ihn nie getadelt oder zurechtgewiesen. So war Adonija stolz und überheblich geworden, und er beschloss: »Ich werde der nächste König sein — ich und kein anderer!« Er beschaffte sich einen Wagen mit Pferden und eine fünfzig Mann starke Leibwache.

Adonijah Usurps the Kingdom

Then Adonijah the son of Haggith exalted himself, saying, I will be king: and he prepared him chariots and horsemen, and fifty men to run before him.

Es gelang ihm, Joab, den Sohn von Davids Schwester Zeruja, und den Priester Abjatar für seine Pläne zu gewinnen, und die beiden unterstützten ihn.

And he conferred with Joab the son of Zeruiah, and with Abiathar the priest: and they following Adonijah helped him.

And Adonijah slew sheep and oxen and fat cattle by the stone of Zoheleth, which is by Enrogel, and called all his brethren the king's sons, and all the men of Judah the king's servants:

aber nicht seinen Bruder Salomo, den Propheten Nathan, Benaja und die Elitesoldaten von David.

But Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah, and the mighty men, and Solomon his brother, he called not.

Da eilte Nathan zu Salomos Mutter Batseba und fragte sie: »Hast du schon gehört? Adonija, der Sohn von Haggit, ist König geworden! Und David, unser Herr, weiß es nicht einmal!

Nathan and Bathsheba Before David

Wherefore Nathan spake unto Bathsheba the mother of Solomon, saying, Hast thou not heard that Adonijah the son of Haggith doth reign, and David our lord knoweth it not?

Dein Leben ist in Gefahr und auch das deines Sohnes Salomo. Darum folge jetzt meinem Rat:

Now therefore come, let me, I pray thee, give thee counsel, that thou mayest save thine own life, and the life of thy son Solomon.

Geh zu König David und sag ihm: ›Mein Herr und König, du hast mir doch geschworen, dass mein Sohn Salomo dein Nachfolger wird. Du hast gesagt: Ich will, dass er einmal auf meinem Königsthron sitzt! Aber warum ist Adonija nun König geworden?‹

Go and get thee in unto king David, and say unto him, Didst not thou, my lord, O king, swear unto thine handmaid, saying, Assuredly Solomon thy son shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne? why then doth Adonijah reign?

Und dann, während du noch mit dem König sprichst, komme ich dazu und bestätige deine Worte.«

Behold, while thou yet talkest there with the king, I also will come in after thee, and confirm thy words.

Sofort ging Batseba zum König, der sich jetzt meistens im innersten Zimmer des Palasts aufhielt. Er war ja inzwischen sehr alt geworden, und Abischag aus Schunem pflegte ihn.

And Bathsheba went in unto the king into the chamber: and the king was very old; and Abishag the Shunammite ministered unto the king.

Batseba betrat den Raum, verneigte sich und warf sich vor dem König zu Boden. Er fragte sie: »Was hast du auf dem Herzen?«

And Bathsheba bowed, and did obeisance unto the king. And the king said, What wouldest thou?

Da brachte sie ihr Anliegen vor: »Mein Herr, du selbst hast mir doch beim HERRN, deinem Gott, geschworen, dass mein Sohn Salomo dein Nachfolger wird. Du hast gesagt: ›Ich will, dass er einmal auf meinem Königsthron sitzt!‹

And she said unto him, My lord, thou swarest by the LORD thy God unto thine handmaid, saying, Assuredly Solomon thy son shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne.

Aber was ist nun geschehen? Adonija ist König geworden, und du, mein Herr und König, weißt es nicht einmal!

And now, behold, Adonijah reigneth; and now, my lord the king, thou knowest it not:

Er ließ sehr viele Stiere, gemästete Kälber und Schafe schlachten und hat alle Königssöhne zu einem Fest eingeladen. Auch der Priester Abjatar und dein Heerführer Joab sind dabei, nicht aber dein Sohn Salomo, der treu zu dir steht.

And he hath slain oxen and fat cattle and sheep in abundance, and hath called all the sons of the king, and Abiathar the priest, and Joab the captain of the host: but Solomon thy servant hath he not called.

Und nun, mein Herr und König, wartet ganz Israel gespannt darauf, dass du öffentlich deinen Nachfolger bestimmst.

And thou, my lord, O king, the eyes of all Israel are upon thee, that thou shouldest tell them who shall sit on the throne of my lord the king after him.

Wenn du jetzt nichts unternimmst, dann werden mein Sohn Salomo und ich als Hochverräter behandelt werden, sobald du gestorben bist. Denn der neue König wird seine Herrschaft durch uns bedroht sehen.«

Otherwise it shall come to pass, when my lord the king shall sleep with his fathers, that I and my son Solomon shall be counted offenders.

Während Batseba noch mit David sprach, meldete man dem König den Besuch des Propheten Nathan. Der Prophet betrat den Raum und verneigte sich vor dem König, bis sein Gesicht den Boden berührte.

And, lo, while she yet talked with the king, Nathan the prophet also came in.

Dann sagte er: »Mein Herr und König, du hast nun wohl entschieden, wer dein Nachfolger wird. Sicher hast du angeordnet, dass Adonija auf deinem Königsthron sitzen soll!

And Nathan said, My lord, O king, hast thou said, Adonijah shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne?

Auf jeden Fall ist er heute zur Quelle Rogel hinuntergegangen und ließ dort sehr viele Stiere, gemästete Kälber und Schafe schlachten. Er hat alle Prinzen, alle Heerführer und den Priester Abjatar zu einem Opferfest eingeladen. Und nun feiern sie dort ein rauschendes Fest. Sie essen und trinken und rufen: ›Hoch lebe König Adonija!‹

For he is gone down this day, and hath slain oxen and fat cattle and sheep in abundance, and hath called all the king's sons, and the captains of the host, and Abiathar the priest; and, behold, they eat and drink before him, and say, God save king Adonijah.

Mich aber, deinen ergebenen Knecht, Priester Zadok, Benaja, den Sohn von Jojada, und deinen Sohn Salomo, der treu zu dir hält, hat er nicht eingeladen.

But me, even me thy servant, and Zadok the priest, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and thy servant Solomon, hath he not called.

Hast du, mein Herr und König, das wirklich so befohlen? Hast du über die Köpfe deiner engsten Vertrauten hinweg deinen Nachfolger bestimmt?«

Is this thing done by my lord the king, and thou hast not shewed it unto thy servant, who should sit on the throne of my lord the king after him?

Bevor der König antwortete, ließ er Batseba wieder hereinrufen. Sie kam und trat vor den König.

David Renews his Oath to Bathsheba

Then king David answered and said, Call me Bathsheba. And she came into the king's presence, and stood before the king.

Er sagte zu ihr: »Ja, ich habe dir versprochen, dass dein Sohn Salomo mein Nachfolger wird. Ich habe gesagt: Ich will, dass er einmal auf meinem Königsthron sitzt. Dies habe ich dir sogar mit einem Eid vor dem HERRN, dem Gott Israels, bekräftigt. Heute noch will ich dieses Versprechen einlösen, so wahr der HERR lebt, der mich aus jeder Not gerettet hat!«

And the king sware, and said, As the LORD liveth, that hath redeemed my soul out of all distress,

Da verneigte sich Batseba vor dem König, warf sich vor ihm nieder und berührte mit ihrem Gesicht den Boden. »Lang lebe mein Herr, der König David!«, rief sie.

Then Bathsheba bowed with her face to the earth, and did reverence to the king, and said, Let my lord king David live for ever.

Darauf befahl David: »Ruft den Priester Zadok, den Propheten Nathan und Benaja, den Sohn von Jojada, her!« Bald standen die drei vor dem König.

Solomon Anointed King

And king David said, Call me Zadok the priest, and Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada. And they came before the king.

Er sagte zu ihnen: »Nehmt meine Leibwache mit und begleitet meinen Sohn Salomo hinunter zur Quelle Gihon! Salomo soll auf meinem eigenen Maultier reiten.

The king also said unto them, Take with you the servants of your lord, and cause Solomon my son to ride upon mine own mule, and bring him down to Gihon:

Zadok und Nathan, ihr beide werdet ihn dort unten zum König über Israel salben. Und dann blast die Signalhörner und ruft: ›Hoch lebe König Salomo!‹

And let Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet anoint him there king over Israel: and blow ye with the trumpet, and say, God save king Solomon.

Danach geleitet ihn wieder zurück zum Palast! Er soll sich auf meinen Thron setzen, denn er ist mein Nachfolger. Ihn habe ich zum neuen Herrscher über Israel und Juda bestimmt.«

Then ye shall come up after him, that he may come and sit upon my throne; for he shall be king in my stead: and I have appointed him to be ruler over Israel and over Judah.

»Ja, so soll es geschehen«, antwortete Benaja, der Sohn von Jojada, »möge der HERR, der Gott unseres Königs, seinen Segen dazu geben.

And Benaiah the son of Jehoiada answered the king, and said, Amen: the LORD God of my lord the king say so too.

So wie der HERR unserem König David beigestanden hat, so möge er nun Salomo beistehen; ja, er möge ihn noch mächtiger machen als meinen Herrn, den König David!«

As the LORD hath been with my lord the king, even so be he with Solomon, and make his throne greater than the throne of my lord king David.

So geleiteten der Priester Zadok, der Prophet Nathan, Benaja, der Sohn von Jojada, und die königliche Leibgarde Salomo hinunter zur Quelle Gihon. Salomo ritt auf dem Maultier des Königs.

So Zadok the priest, and Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and the Cherethites, and the Pelethites, went down, and caused Solomon to ride upon king David's mule, and brought him to Gihon.

Vorher hatte Zadok das Horn mit Öl aus dem Heiligtum geholt. Er salbte Salomo zum neuen König. Sie bliesen die Hörner, und das Volk jubelte: »Hoch lebe König Salomo!«

And Zadok the priest took an horn of oil out of the tabernacle, and anointed Solomon. And they blew the trumpet; and all the people said, God save king Solomon.

Danach zogen sie wieder hinauf zum Palast, und viele Menschen folgten ihnen; sie spielten auf Flöten und jubelten vor Freude so laut, dass die Erde bebte.

And all the people came up after him, and the people piped with pipes, and rejoiced with great joy, so that the earth rent with the sound of them.

Adonija und seine Gäste hatten gerade ihr Festmahl beendet, da drangen auch schon die Jubelrufe aus der Stadt an ihre Ohren. Als auch noch die Hörner zu hören waren, fragte Joab erstaunt: »Was soll dieser Lärm in der Stadt?«

Adonijah Informed of Solomon's Kingship

And Adonijah and all the guests that were with him heard it as they had made an end of eating. And when Joab heard the sound of the trumpet, he said, Wherefore is this noise of the city being in an uproar?

Joab hatte noch nicht ausgeredet, da erschien Jonatan, der Sohn des Priesters Abjatar. »Komm, setz dich zu uns!«, lud Adonija ihn ein. »Du bist ein zuverlässiger Mann; bestimmt bringst du uns gute Nachrichten!«

And while he yet spake, behold, Jonathan the son of Abiathar the priest came: and Adonijah said unto him, Come in; for thou art a valiant man, and bringest good tidings.

»Nein, leider nicht!«, entgegnete Jonatan. »Unser Herr, König David, hat Salomo als seinen Nachfolger eingesetzt!

And Jonathan answered and said to Adonijah, Verily our lord king David hath made Solomon king.

Er hat ihn auf seinem Maultier reiten lassen, und der Priester Zadok, der Prophet Nathan, Benaja, der Sohn von Jojada, und die ganze königliche Leibwache begleiteten ihn.

And the king hath sent with him Zadok the priest, and Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and the Cherethites, and the Pelethites, and they have caused him to ride upon the king's mule:

Unten bei der Quelle Gihon haben Zadok und Nathan ihn zum König gesalbt. Dann sind sie alle mit lautem Jubel wieder zum Palast hinaufgezogen. Die ganze Stadt ist auf den Beinen. Das ist der Lärm, den ihr hört.

And Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet have anointed him king in Gihon: and they are come up from thence rejoicing, so that the city rang again. This is the noise that ye have heard.

Und stellt euch vor, Salomo hat sich bereits auf den Königsthron gesetzt!

And also Solomon sitteth on the throne of the kingdom.

Alle Getreuen des Königs sind zu unserem Herrn, dem König David, hineingegangen, um ihn zu dieser Entscheidung zu beglückwünschen: ›Dein Gott mache Salomo noch berühmter als dich‹, haben sie gesagt. ›Möge er noch mächtiger werden als du!‹ Der König aber hat seinen Kopf geneigt und auf seinem Bett den Herrn angebetet.

And moreover the king's servants came to bless our lord king David, saying, God make the name of Solomon better than thy name, and make his throne greater than thy throne. And the king bowed himself upon the bed.

›Gepriesen sei der HERR, der Gott Israels!‹, hat er gerufen. ›Heute hat er einen meiner Söhne als meinen Nachfolger auf den Thron gesetzt. Dem Herrn sei Dank, dass ich diesen Augenblick noch erleben darf!‹«

And also thus said the king, Blessed be the LORD God of Israel, which hath given one to sit on my throne this day, mine eyes even seeing it.

Da packte Adonijas Gäste der Schreck. Sie sprangen auf und liefen in alle Richtungen davon.

And all the guests that were with Adonijah were afraid, and rose up, and went every man his way.

Auch Adonija bekam es mit der Angst zu tun. Er fürchtete Salomos Rache. Darum flüchtete er zum Brandopferaltar und hielt sich an dessen Hörnern fest.

And Adonijah feared because of Solomon, and arose, and went, and caught hold on the horns of the altar.

Jemand ging zu Salomo und berichtete ihm: »Adonija hat große Angst vor dem König Salomo. Darum hält er sich an den Hörnern des Altars fest und ruft: ›Hier bleibe ich, bis König Salomo mir schwört, dass er mich nicht hinrichten lässt.‹«

And it was told Solomon, saying, Behold, Adonijah feareth king Solomon: for, lo, he hath caught hold on the horns of the altar, saying, Let king Solomon swear unto me to day that he will not slay his servant with the sword.

Salomo versprach: »Solange Adonija mir treu ergeben ist, soll ihm kein Haar gekrümmt werden. Doch sobald er sich etwas zuschulden kommen lässt, wird er hingerichtet!«

And Solomon said, If he will shew himself a worthy man, there shall not an hair of him fall to the earth: but if wickedness shall be found in him, he shall die.

Darauf ließ der König Adonija vom Altar wegholen. Adonija ging sogleich zu Salomo und warf sich ihm zu Füßen. Salomo aber sagte zu ihm: »Geh jetzt nach Hause!«

So king Solomon sent, and they brought him down from the altar. And he came and bowed himself to king Solomon: and Solomon said unto him, Go to thine house.
