The Axe Head Recovered
Now the sons of the prophets said to Elisha, “Behold now, the place before you where we are living is too limited for us.

Könnten wir nicht alle zum Jordan gehen und Holz schlagen? Wenn jeder von uns einen Balken mitnimmt, können wir unsere Räume so vergrößern, dass wir alle genügend Platz haben.« »Geht nur!«, antwortete Elisa.
“Please let us go to the Jordan and each of us take from there a beam, and let us make a place there for ourselves where we may live.” So he said, “Go.”
Da bat einer von ihnen: »Bitte, Herr, tu uns doch den Gefallen und begleite uns!« Der Prophet willigte ein
Then one said, “Please be willing to go with your servants.” And he answered, “I shall go.”
und ging mit ihnen. Am Jordan fingen sie sogleich an, Bäume zu fällen.
So he went with them; and when they came to the Jordan, they cut down trees.
Dabei rutschte einem von ihnen das Eisen seiner Axt vom Stiel und fiel ins Wasser. »O nein!«, schrie er entsetzt und wandte sich an Elisa: »Herr, was soll ich machen? Diese Axt war nur geliehen!«
But as one was felling a beam, the axe head fell into the water; and he cried out and said, “Alas, my master! For it was borrowed.”
Elisa fragte: »Wohin genau ist das Eisen gefallen?« Der Mann zeigte ihm die Stelle. Der Prophet schnitt einen Zweig von einem Baum ab und warf ihn dort ins Wasser. Da tauchte das Eisen plötzlich auf und schwamm an der Wasseroberfläche.
Then the man of God said, “Where did it fall?” And when he showed him the place, he cut off a stick and threw it in there, and made the iron float.
»Willst du es nicht herausfischen?«, forderte Elisa ihn auf. Da bückte der Mann sich und holte das Eisen heraus.
He said, “Take it up for yourself.” So he put out his hand and took it.
Der König von Syrien führte Krieg gegen Israel. Nach ausführlicher Beratung mit seinen Heerführern entschied er, wo die syrischen Truppen ihr Lager aufschlagen sollten.
The Arameans Plot to Capture Elisha
Now the king of Aram was warring against Israel; and he counseled with his servants saying, “In such and such a place shall be my camp.”
Zum gleichen Zeitpunkt schickte der Prophet Elisa einen Boten nach Samaria. Er warnte König Joram von Israel davor, sein Heer an diesem Ort vorbeiziehen zu lassen, weil die Syrer dort im Hinterhalt lagen.
The man of God sent word to the king of Israel saying, “Beware that you do not pass this place, for the Arameans are coming down there.”
Daraufhin schickte Joram einen Spähtrupp in die Gegend und ließ sie sorgfältig beobachten. Dasselbe wiederholte sich mehrmals.
The king of Israel sent to the place about which the man of God had told him; thus he warned him, so that he guarded himself there, more than once or twice.
Als der König von Syrien davon erfuhr, war er äußerst beunruhigt. Er ließ seine Heerführer zu sich kommen und stellte sie zur Rede: »Einer von euch muss heimlich zu den Israeliten halten. Wer ist es?«
Now the heart of the king of Aram was enraged over this thing; and he called his servants and said to them, “Will you tell me which of us is for the king of Israel?”
»Mein König, keiner von uns ist ein Verräter!«, entgegnete einer der Heerführer. »Dieser Prophet Elisa in Israel ist an allem schuld! Er kann dem König von Israel sogar sagen, was du in deinem Schlafzimmer flüsterst.«
One of his servants said, “No, my lord, O king; but Elisha, the prophet who is in Israel, tells the king of Israel the words that you speak in your bedroom.”
Der König befahl: »Versucht auf der Stelle, diesen Mann zu finden! Dann lasse ich ihn verhaften und hierherbringen.« Der König erfuhr, dass Elisa sich in Dotan aufhielt.
So he said, “Go and see where he is, that I may send and take him.” And it was told him, saying, “Behold, he is in Dothan.”
Sogleich schickte er ein großes Heer mit vielen Pferden und Streitwagen dorthin. Es war schon dunkel, als die Truppen Dotan erreichten, und noch in derselben Nacht umzingelten sie die Stadt.
He sent horses and chariots and a great army there, and they came by night and surrounded the city.
Als Elisas Diener früh am Morgen aufstand und vor das Haus trat, da traute er seinen Augen kaum: Die Stadt war von einem Heer mit Pferden und Streitwagen eingeschlossen! »Ach, mein Herr, was sollen wir jetzt bloß tun?«, rief er.
Now when the attendant of the man of God had risen early and gone out, behold, an army with horses and chariots was circling the city. And his servant said to him, “Alas, my master! What shall we do?”
Doch Elisa beruhigte ihn: »Du brauchst keine Angst zu haben! Denn auf unserer Seite steht ein noch größeres Heer.«
So he answered, “Do not fear, for those who are with us are more than those who are with them.”
Dann betete er: »Bitte, HERR, öffne ihm die Augen!« Da öffnete der HERR Elisas Diener die Augen, und er konnte sehen, dass der ganze Berg, auf dem die Stadt stand, von Pferden und Streitwagen aus Feuer beschützt wurde.
Then Elisha prayed and said, “O LORD, I pray, open his eyes that he may see.” And the LORD opened the servant’s eyes and he saw; and behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.
Als dann die Syrer vorrückten, betete Elisa: »HERR, lass sie alle blind werden!« Gott erhörte Elisas Gebet und schlug das ganze syrische Heer mit Blindheit.
When they came down to him, Elisha prayed to the LORD and said, “Strike this people with blindness, I pray.” So He struck them with blindness according to the word of Elisha.
Da ging der Prophet zu den Heerführern hinaus und sagte: »Ihr habt wohl den Weg verfehlt und seid in der falschen Stadt gelandet! Aber kommt mit, ich will euch zu dem Mann bringen, den ihr sucht.« Er führte die Syrer in die israelitische Hauptstadt Samaria.
Then Elisha said to them, “This is not the way, nor is this the city; follow me and I will bring you to the man whom you seek.” And he brought them to Samaria.
Als sie dort angekommen waren, betete Elisa: »HERR, öffne ihnen die Augen, damit sie wieder sehen können!« Da öffnete der HERR ihnen die Augen, und sie stellten voller Schrecken fest, dass sie sich mitten in Samaria befanden.
When they had come into Samaria, Elisha said, “O LORD, open the eyes of these men, that they may see.” So the LORD opened their eyes and they saw; and behold, they were in the midst of Samaria.
Als der König von Israel seine Feinde sah, fragte er Elisa: »Mein Vater, was rätst du mir? Soll ich sie alle umbringen lassen? Soll ich sie erschlagen?«
Then the king of Israel when he saw them, said to Elisha, “My father, shall I kill them? Shall I kill them?”
»Nein, das sollst du nicht!«, entgegnete der Prophet. »Du würdest doch nicht einmal Soldaten erschlagen, die du im Kampf gefangen genommen hast! Gib ihnen zu essen und zu trinken, und dann lass sie zurück zu ihrem Herrn ziehen.«
He answered, “You shall not kill them. Would you kill those you have taken captive with your sword and with your bow? Set bread and water before them, that they may eat and drink and go to their master.”
Da ließ der König den Syrern ein herrliches Festmahl auftischen. Nachdem sie gegessen und getrunken hatten, durften sie in ihr Land zurückkehren. Von da an unternahmen die syrischen Truppen keine Raubzüge mehr auf israelitisches Gebiet.
So he prepared a great feast for them; and when they had eaten and drunk he sent them away, and they went to their master. And the marauding bands of Arameans did not come again into the land of Israel.
Einige Zeit später zog König Ben-Hadad von Syrien alle seine Truppen zusammen, marschierte in Israel ein und belagerte Samaria.
The Siege of Samaria — Cannibalism
Now it came about after this, that Ben-hadad king of Aram gathered all his army and went up and besieged Samaria.
In der eingeschlossenen Stadt brach eine große Hungersnot aus. Schließlich kostete ein Eselskopf 80 Silberstücke, und für eine Handvoll Taubenmist musste man 5 Silberstücke bezahlen.
There was a great famine in Samaria; and behold, they besieged it, until a donkey’s head was sold for eighty shekels of silver, and a fourth of a kab of dove’s dung for five shekels of silver.
Als König Joram einmal auf der Stadtmauer umherging, flehte eine Frau ihn an: »Hilf mir doch, mein Herr und König!«
As the king of Israel was passing by on the wall a woman cried out to him, saying, “Help, my lord, O king!”
Er entgegnete: »Wenn schon der HERR dir nicht hilft, wie sollte dann ich dir helfen können? Kann ich dir etwa Brot oder Wein geben?
He said, “If the LORD does not help you, from where shall I help you? From the threshing floor, or from the wine press?”
Was also willst du?« Da brach es aus ihr heraus: »Diese Frau da drüben hat zu mir gesagt: ›Gib du heute deinen Sohn her, damit wir ihn essen können. Morgen essen wir dann meinen.‹
And the king said to her, “What is the matter with you?” And she answered, “This woman said to me, ‘Give your son that we may eat him today, and we will eat my son tomorrow.’
Also haben wir meinen Sohn gekocht und ihn gegessen. Doch als ich am nächsten Tag zu ihr kam und sie aufforderte, nun ihren Sohn herzugeben, da hatte sie ihn versteckt.«
“So we boiled my son and ate him; and I said to her on the next day, ‘Give your son, that we may eat him’; but she has hidden her son.”
Als der König das hörte, zerriss er erschüttert sein Obergewand. Weil er immer noch oben auf der Stadtmauer stand, konnten alle sehen, dass er auf dem bloßen Leib nur ein Bußgewand aus grobem Stoff trug.
When the king heard the words of the woman, he tore his clothes — now he was passing by on the wall — and the people looked, and behold, he had sackcloth beneath on his body.
Zornig rief er: »Gott soll mich schwer bestrafen, wenn ich nicht heute noch Elisa, den Sohn von Schafat, um einen Kopf kürzer mache!«
Then he said, “May God do so to me and more also, if the head of Elisha the son of Shaphat remains on him today.”
Er schickte einen Boten voraus und machte sich dann selbst auf den Weg zu Elisa. Elisa war zu Hause, und die führenden Männer der Stadt saßen gerade bei ihm. Noch bevor der königliche Bote angekommen war, sagte Elisa zu den Männern: »Gerade hat der König, dieser Mörder, einen Boten losgeschickt, der mir den Kopf abschlagen soll! Lasst ihn nicht herein, sondern verriegelt die Tür! Der König wird auch gleich hier sein.«
Now Elisha was sitting in his house, and the elders were sitting with him. And the king sent a man from his presence; but before the messenger came to him, he said to the elders, “Do you see how this son of a murderer has sent to take away my head? Look, when the messenger comes, shut the door and hold the door shut against him. Is not the sound of his master’s feet behind him?”
Elisa hatte noch nicht ausgeredet, da waren der Bote und gleich nach ihm der König auch schon herangeeilt. Der König fuhr Elisa an: »Der HERR hat uns in dieses Unglück gestürzt! Warum sollte ich von ihm noch Hilfe erwarten?«
While he was still talking with them, behold, the messenger came down to him and he said, “Behold, this evil is from the LORD; why should I wait for the LORD any longer?”
