Am 24. Tag desselben Monats kamen die Israeliten zu einem Fastentag zusammen. Sie zogen Bußgewänder an und streuten sich als Zeichen ihrer Trauer Erde auf den Kopf.
The People Confess Their Sins
Now in the twenty and fourth day of this month the children of Israel were assembled with fasting, and with sackclothes, and earth upon them.

Von allen, die nicht zum Volk Israel gehörten, hatten sie sich getrennt und versammelten sich nun, um die Sünden zu bekennen, die sie und ihre Vorfahren begangen hatten.
And the seed of Israel separated themselves from all strangers, and stood and confessed their sins, and the iniquities of their fathers.
Drei Stunden lang hörten sie im Stehen zu, was aus dem Gesetzbuch des HERRN, ihres Gottes, vorgelesen wurde. Dann warfen sie sich vor dem HERRN, ihrem Gott, nieder und bekannten ihm drei Stunden lang ihre Schuld.
And they stood up in their place, and read in the book of the law of the LORD their God one fourth part of the day; and another fourth part they confessed, and worshipped the LORD their God.
Auf einer Plattform standen die Leviten Jeschua, Bani, Kadmiël, Schebanja, Bunni, Scherebja, Bani und Kenani. Mit lauter Stimme beteten sie zum HERRN, ihrem Gott.
Then stood up upon the stairs, of the Levites, Jeshua, and Bani, Kadmiel, Shebaniah, Bunni, Sherebiah, Bani, and Chenani, and cried with a loud voice unto the LORD their God.
Die Leviten Jeschua, Kadmiël, Bani, Haschabneja, Scherebja, Hodija, Schebanja und Petachja riefen: »Steht auf, preist den HERRN, euren Gott, bis in alle Ewigkeit! Rühmt seinen herrlichen Namen, denn unser Gott ist groß und mächtig; selbst mit unseren Lobliedern können wir ihn nicht beschreiben!«
Then the Levites, Jeshua, and Kadmiel, Bani, Hashabniah, Sherebiah, Hodijah, Shebaniah, and Pethahiah, said, Stand up and bless the LORD your God for ever and ever: and blessed be thy glorious name, which is exalted above all blessing and praise.
Dann betete Esra: »Du bist der HERR, du allein! Du hast den Himmel geschaffen mit all seinen Sternen! Die Erde und das Meer sind dein Werk mit allen Geschöpfen, die es dort gibt. Du hast ihnen das Leben geschenkt; die Mächte des Himmels beten dich an.
Thou, even thou, art LORD alone; thou hast made heaven, the heaven of heavens, with all their host, the earth, and all things that are therein, the seas, and all that is therein, and thou preservest them all; and the host of heaven worshippeth thee.
Du, o HERR, bist der Gott, der Abram erwählte; du führtest ihn aus Ur im Land der Chaldäer und gabst ihm den Namen Abraham.
Thou art the LORD the God, who didst choose Abram, and broughtest him forth out of Ur of the Chaldees, and gavest him the name of Abraham;
Du sahst, dass er dir treu war, und hast einen Bund mit ihm geschlossen. Du versprachst, seinen Nachkommen eine Heimat zu geben: das Land der Kanaaniter und Hetiter, der Amoriter und Perisiter, der Jebusiter und Girgaschiter. Du hast dein Wort gehalten, denn du bist zuverlässig und gerecht!
And foundest his heart faithful before thee, and madest a covenant with him to give the land of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Jebusites, and the Girgashites, to give it, I say, to his seed, and hast performed thy words; for thou art righteous:
Als unsere Vorfahren in Ägypten unterdrückt wurden, hast du dich über sie erbarmt. Am Schilfmeer schrien sie um Hilfe, und du hast sie erhört.
And didst see the affliction of our fathers in Egypt, and heardest their cry by the Red sea;
Der Pharao, seine obersten Beamten und sein Volk haben unsere Vorfahren verspottet und gedemütigt. Doch du hast ihnen Einhalt geboten mit großen Wundern und mit Zeichen deiner Macht. So hast du deinen Namen in aller Welt bekannt gemacht, noch heute spricht man von deinen Taten.
And shewedst signs and wonders upon Pharaoh, and on all his servants, and on all the people of his land: for thou knewest that they dealt proudly against them. So didst thou get thee a name, as it is this day.
Vor den Augen deines Volkes teiltest du das Meer, trockenen Fußes zogen sie mitten hindurch. Doch ihre Verfolger stürztest du in die Wogen, wie Steine sanken sie in die Tiefe.
And thou didst divide the sea before them, so that they went through the midst of the sea on the dry land; and their persecutors thou threwest into the deeps, as a stone into the mighty waters.
Mit einer Wolkensäule führtest du dein Volk bei Tag, in der Nacht mit einer Feuersäule. So zeigtest du ihnen den Weg.
Moreover thou leddest them in the day by a cloudy pillar; and in the night by a pillar of fire, to give them light in the way wherein they should go.
Du stiegst vom Himmel herab auf den Berg Sinai und sprachst zu deinem Volk. Du gabst ihnen klare Bestimmungen, Weisungen, auf die man sich verlassen kann, gute Ordnungen und Gebote.
Thou camest down also upon mount Sinai, and spakest with them from heaven, and gavest them right judgments, and true laws, good statutes and commandments:
Du lehrtest sie, den Sabbat als einen Tag zu achten, der dir allein gehört. Durch Mose, deinen Diener, hast du ihnen Gebote, Ordnungen und ein Gesetz gegeben.
And madest known unto them thy holy sabbath, and commandedst them precepts, statutes, and laws, by the hand of Moses thy servant:
Als der Hunger sie quälte, gabst du ihnen Brot vom Himmel; als sie Durst litten, ließest du Wasser aus dem Felsen fließen. Du befahlst ihnen, das Land einzunehmen, das du ihnen zugesagt hattest.
And gavest them bread from heaven for their hunger, and broughtest forth water for them out of the rock for their thirst, and promisedst them that they should go in to possess the land which thou hadst sworn to give them.
Aber unsere Vorfahren waren hochmütig, sie widersetzten sich dir und schlugen deine Weisungen in den Wind.
But they and our fathers dealt proudly, and hardened their necks, and hearkened not to thy commandments,
Sie wollten dir nicht gehorchen und vergaßen deine großen Wunder, mit denen du ihnen geholfen hattest. Eigensinnig und widerspenstig, wie sie waren, wollten sie selbst einen Anführer berufen, der sie in die Sklaverei nach Ägypten zurückbringen sollte. Du aber bist ein Gott, der vergibt, du bist gnädig und barmherzig; deine Geduld ist groß, und deine Liebe kennt kein Ende. Du hast unsere Vorfahren nicht verlassen,
And refused to obey, neither were mindful of thy wonders that thou didst among them; but hardened their necks, and in their rebellion appointed a captain to return to their bondage: but thou art a God ready to pardon, gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and forsookest them not.
auch nicht, als sie sich eine Stierfigur gossen und sagten: ›Das ist unser Gott, der uns aus Ägypten geführt hat!‹ Wie sehr haben sie dich damit beleidigt!
Yea, when they had made them a molten calf, and said, This is thy God that brought thee up out of Egypt, and had wrought great provocations;
Du aber hast sie in der Wüste nicht im Stich gelassen, denn du bist barmherzig. Am Tag zeigte die Wolkensäule, wohin sie gehen sollten, und in der Nacht erleuchtete die Feuersäule ihren Weg.
Yet thou in thy manifold mercies forsookest them not in the wilderness: the pillar of the cloud departed not from them by day, to lead them in the way; neither the pillar of fire by night, to shew them light, and the way wherein they should go.
Du schenktest ihnen deinen guten Geist, um sie zur Einsicht zu bringen. Als sie hungrig und durstig waren, hast du sie mit Manna und Wasser versorgt.
Thou gavest also thy good spirit to instruct them, and withheldest not thy manna from their mouth, and gavest them water for their thirst.
Vierzig Jahre wanderten sie in der Wüste umher, und immer bekamen sie von dir, was sie brauchten. Ihre Kleider verschlissen nicht, und ihre Füße schwollen nicht an vom langen Marsch.
Yea, forty years didst thou sustain them in the wilderness, so that they lacked nothing; their clothes waxed not old, and their feet swelled not.
Königreiche und Völker gabst du in ihre Gewalt, ein Land nach dem anderen konnten sie einnehmen. Sie eroberten Heschbon, das Land von König Sihon, und Baschan, das Land von König Og.
Moreover thou gavest them kingdoms and nations, and didst divide them into corners: so they possessed the land of Sihon, and the land of the king of Heshbon, and the land of Og king of Bashan.
Du hast ihnen viele Kinder gegeben, so zahlreich wie die Sterne am Himmel. Du brachtest sie in das Land, das du ihren Vorfahren versprochen hattest.
Their children also multipliedst thou as the stars of heaven, and broughtest them into the land, concerning which thou hadst promised to their fathers, that they should go in to possess it.
Sie eroberten es und ließen sich dort nieder. Die Bewohner von Kanaan mussten sich ihnen unterwerfen; die Herrscher und das Volk gabst du in ihre Gewalt, sie mussten sich ihrem Willen beugen.
So the children went in and possessed the land, and thou subduedst before them the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, and gavest them into their hands, with their kings, and the people of the land, that they might do with them as they would.
Dein Volk eroberte die befestigten Städte und nahm fruchtbares Ackerland in Besitz, dazu reich ausgestattete Häuser, ausgehobene Zisternen, viele Weinberge, Olivengärten und Obstbäume. Nun konnten sie essen, so viel sie wollten. Es ging ihnen sehr gut, du hattest sie so reich beschenkt!
And they took strong cities, and a fat land, and possessed houses full of all goods, wells digged, vineyards, and oliveyards, and fruit trees in abundance: so they did eat, and were filled, and became fat, and delighted themselves in thy great goodness.
Doch trotz allem kehrten sie dir den Rücken und lehnten sich gegen dich auf: Von deinen Geboten wollten sie nichts mehr wissen; sie brachten deine Propheten um, die sie eindringlich ermahnt hatten, wieder zu dir zurückzukehren. Damit haben sie dich selbst beleidigt.
Nevertheless they were disobedient, and rebelled against thee, and cast thy law behind their backs, and slew thy prophets which testified against them to turn them to thee, and they wrought great provocations.
Da ließest du ihre Feinde Macht über sie gewinnen, grausam wurden sie von ihnen unterdrückt. In ihrer Not schrien sie zu dir um Hilfe, und du erhörtest sie im Himmel, weil du Erbarmen mit ihnen hattest. Du schicktest ihnen Retter, die sie von ihren Unterdrückern befreiten.
Therefore thou deliveredst them into the hand of their enemies, who vexed them: and in the time of their trouble, when they cried unto thee, thou heardest them from heaven; and according to thy manifold mercies thou gavest them saviours, who saved them out of the hand of their enemies.
Doch kaum hatten sie Ruhe vor ihnen, taten sie wieder, was du verabscheust. Erneut ließest du sie in die Hände ihrer Feinde fallen, hilflos waren sie ihnen ausgeliefert. Und wieder schrien sie zu dir, und du erhörtest sie im Himmel. Du brachtest ihnen immer wieder Rettung, weil du Erbarmen mit ihnen hattest.
But after they had rest, they did evil again before thee: therefore leftest thou them in the hand of their enemies, so that they had the dominion over them: yet when they returned, and cried unto thee, thou heardest them from heaven; and many times didst thou deliver them according to thy mercies;
Du riefst sie zur Besinnung, sie sollten umkehren und sich an dein Gesetz halten. Doch sie waren zu stolz und folgten deinen Weisungen nicht. Sie übertraten deine Gebote, die doch jedem, der sie befolgt, das Leben bringen. Sie wandten sich von dir ab, sie wollten nichts mehr von dir wissen und weigerten sich, dir zu gehorchen.
And testifiedst against them, that thou mightest bring them again unto thy law: yet they dealt proudly, and hearkened not unto thy commandments, but sinned against thy judgments, (which if a man do, he shall live in them;) and withdrew the shoulder, and hardened their neck, and would not hear.
Viele Jahre lang hattest du Geduld mit ihnen; du ermahntest sie durch deinen Geist und sprachst zu ihnen durch die Propheten. Doch sie stellten sich taub. Da gabst du sie in die Gewalt fremder Völker.
Yet many years didst thou forbear them, and testifiedst against them by thy spirit in thy prophets: yet would they not give ear: therefore gavest thou them into the hand of the people of the lands.
Aber weil du erneut Erbarmen mit ihnen hattest, wolltest du sie nicht völlig vernichten; du überließest sie nicht ihrem Schicksal. Denn du bist gnädig und barmherzig.
Nevertheless for thy great mercies' sake thou didst not utterly consume them, nor forsake them; for thou art a gracious and merciful God.
Unser Gott, du großer, mächtiger und ehrfurchtgebietender Herr! Du hältst dich an deinen Bund mit uns, deine Liebe hört niemals auf. Sieh doch, welches Leid uns getroffen hat! Unsere Könige und führenden Männer, unsere Priester und Propheten, ja, schon unsere Vorfahren und das ganze Volk — sie alle haben schwer gelitten seit der Zeit, als die assyrischen Könige uns unterdrückten, bis zum heutigen Tag.
Now therefore, our God, the great, the mighty, and the terrible God, who keepest covenant and mercy, let not all the trouble seem little before thee, that hath come upon us, on our kings, on our princes, and on our priests, and on our prophets, and on our fathers, and on all thy people, since the time of the kings of Assyria unto this day.
Doch du hast uns zu Recht bestraft. Du bist uns immer treu geblieben, selbst dann, wenn wir uns von dir lossagten.
Howbeit thou art just in all that is brought upon us; for thou hast done right, but we have done wickedly:
Unsere Könige und führenden Männer, unsere Priester und unsere Vorfahren, sie alle haben dein Gesetz missachtet, sie haben deine Gebote übertreten und deine Warnungen in den Wind geschlagen.
Neither have our kings, our princes, our priests, nor our fathers, kept thy law, nor hearkened unto thy commandments and thy testimonies, wherewith thou didst testify against them.
Du hattest ihnen die Herrschaft anvertraut, du hattest sie mit Gütern reich beschenkt und ihnen ein großes und fruchtbares Land gegeben. Doch sie weigerten sich, dir zu dienen und von ihren falschen Wegen umzukehren.
For they have not served thee in their kingdom, and in thy great goodness that thou gavest them, and in the large and fat land which thou gavest before them, neither turned they from their wicked works.
Und heute sind wir Sklaven in dem Land, das du unseren Vorfahren anvertraut hast, damit sie seine Früchte und seinen Reichtum genießen sollten. Wir müssen hier als Sklaven dienen!
Behold, we are servants this day, and for the land that thou gavest unto our fathers to eat the fruit thereof and the good thereof, behold, we are servants in it:
Die reiche Ernte fällt den Königen zu, die du wegen unserer Sünden über uns herrschen lässt. Nun haben sie Gewalt über uns und über unser Vieh; sie behandeln uns, wie es ihnen gerade passt. Darum sind wir in so großer Not.«
And it yieldeth much increase unto the kings whom thou hast set over us because of our sins: also they have dominion over our bodies, and over our cattle, at their pleasure, and we are in great distress.
