John 1

Am Anfang war das Wort. Das Wort war bei Gott, und das Wort war Gott selbst.

The Eternal Word

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

Von Anfang an war es bei Gott.

He was in the beginning with God.

Alles wurde durch das Wort geschaffen; nichts ist ohne das Wort entstanden.

All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.

In ihm war das Leben, und dieses Leben war das Licht für alle Menschen.

In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.

Es leuchtet in der Finsternis, und die Finsternis hat es nicht auslöschen können.

And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not [a]comprehend it.

Gott schickte einen Boten, einen Mann, der Johannes hieß.

John’s Witness: The True Light

There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.

Sein Auftrag war es, die Menschen auf das Licht hinzuweisen. Alle sollten durch seine Botschaft an den glauben, der das Licht ist.

This man came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all through him might believe.

Johannes selbst war nicht das Licht. Er sollte nur ein Zeuge für das kommende Licht sein.

He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light.

Das wahre Licht ist der, der in die Welt gekommen ist, um für alle Menschen das Licht zu bringen.

That[b] was the true Light which gives light to every man coming into the world.

Doch obwohl er unter ihnen lebte und die Welt durch ihn geschaffen wurde, erkannten ihn die Menschen nicht.

He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him.

Er kam in seine Welt, aber die Menschen wiesen ihn ab.

He came to His [c]own, and His [d]own did not receive Him.

Die ihn aber aufnahmen und an ihn glaubten, denen gab er das Recht, Kinder Gottes zu werden.

But as many as received Him, to them He gave the [e]right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name:

Das wurden sie nicht, weil sie zu einem auserwählten Volk gehörten, auch nicht durch menschliche Zeugung und Geburt. Dieses neue Leben gab ihnen allein Gott.

who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

Das Wort wurde Mensch und lebte unter uns. Wir selbst haben seine göttliche Herrlichkeit gesehen, eine Herrlichkeit, wie sie Gott nur seinem einzigen Sohn gibt. In ihm sind Gottes Gnade und Wahrheit zu uns gekommen.

The Word Becomes Flesh

And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.

Johannes wies immer wieder auf ihn hin. »Diesen habe ich gemeint«, rief er, »wenn ich sagte: ›Nach mir wird einer kommen, der weit über mir steht. Denn er war schon da, bevor ich geboren wurde!‹«

John bore witness of Him and cried out, saying, “This was He of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me [f]is preferred before me, for He was before me.’ ”

Aus seinem göttlichen Reichtum hat er uns immer wieder mit seiner grenzenlosen Liebe beschenkt.

[g]And of His fullness we have all received, and grace for grace.

Durch Mose gab uns Gott das Gesetz mit seinen Forderungen, aber nun ist uns durch Jesus Christus seine Gnade und Wahrheit begegnet.

For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

Kein Mensch hat jemals Gott gesehen. Doch sein einziger Sohn, der selbst Gott ist und in enger Gemeinschaft mit dem Vater lebt, hat ihn uns gezeigt.

No one has seen God at any time. The only begotten [h]Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, He has declared Him.

Die führenden Männer der Juden in Jerusalem schickten einige Priester und Leviten zu Johannes. Sie fragten ihn: »Wer bist du?« Da nutzte Johannes die Gelegenheit, um sie auf Jesus Christus hinzuweisen.

A Voice in the Wilderness

Now this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?”

Er bekannte und ließ keinen Zweifel offen: »Ich bin nicht der Christus, der von Gott versprochene Retter.«

He confessed, and did not deny, but confessed, “I am not the Christ.”

»Wer bist du dann?«, fragten sie weiter. »Bist du Elia?« Johannes verneinte auch das. »Bist du der Prophet, den Mose uns angekündigt hat?« »Nein!«, entgegnete Johannes.

And they asked him, “What then? Are you Elijah?”
He said, “I am not.”
“Are you the Prophet?”
And he answered, “No.”

»Dann sag uns doch, wer du bist. Welche Antwort sollen wir denen geben, die uns hergeschickt haben?«

Then they said to him, “Who are you, that we may give an answer to those who sent us? What do you say about yourself?”

Da sagte Johannes: »Ich bin die Stimme, die in der Wüste ruft: ›Macht den Weg frei für den Herrn!‹ So hat es der Prophet Jesaja schon angekündigt.«

He said: “I am
‘The voice of one crying in the wilderness:
“Make straight the way of the Lord,” ’
as the prophet Isaiah said.”

Unter den Abgesandten waren auch Pharisäer.

Now those who were sent were from the Pharisees.

Sie fragten Johannes nun: »Wenn du nicht der Christus, nicht Elia und auch nicht der von Mose angekündigte Prophet bist, mit welchem Recht taufst du dann?«

And they asked him, saying, “Why then do you baptize if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?”

Darauf erwiderte Johannes: »Ich taufe mit Wasser. Aber mitten unter euch lebt schon der, auf den wir warten. Ihr kennt ihn nur noch nicht.

John answered them, saying, “I baptize with water, but there stands One among you whom you do not know.

Er kommt nach mir — und ich bin nicht einmal würdig, ihm die Schuhe auszuziehen.«

It is He who, coming after me, [i]is preferred before me, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to loose.”

Dieses Gespräch führten sie in Betanien, einem Dorf östlich des Jordan, wo Johannes taufte.

These things were done in [j]Bethabara beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing.

Am nächsten Tag bemerkte Johannes, dass Jesus zu ihm kam. Da rief er: »Seht, das ist Gottes Opferlamm, das die Sünde der Menschen wegnimmt.

The Lamb of God

The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!

Dieser Mann ist es, von dem ich gesagt habe: ›Nach mir wird einer kommen, der weit über mir steht. Denn er war schon da, bevor ich geboren wurde!‹

This is He of whom I said, ‘After me comes a Man who [k]is preferred before me, for He was before me.’

Auch ich wusste vorher nicht, wer er ist. Aber damit dem Volk Israel die Augen für ihn geöffnet werden, taufe ich hier mit Wasser.«

I did not know Him; but that He should be revealed to Israel, therefore I came baptizing with water.”

Und Johannes berichtete weiter: »Ich sah den Geist Gottes wie eine Taube vom Himmel herabkommen und auf ihm bleiben.

And John bore witness, saying, “I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and He remained upon Him.

Wer er ist, wusste ich vorher noch nicht«, wiederholte Johannes, »aber Gott, der mir den Auftrag gab, mit Wasser zu taufen, sagte zu mir: ›Du wirst sehen, wie der Geist auf einen Menschen herabkommt und auf ihm bleibt. Dann weißt du, dass er es ist, der mit dem Heiligen Geist tauft.‹

I did not know Him, but He who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘Upon whom you see the Spirit descending, and remaining on Him, this is He who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’

Und weil ich das gesehen habe, kann ich bezeugen: Dieser Mann ist Gottes Sohn!«

And I have seen and testified that this is the Son of God.”

Johannes der Täufer und zwei seiner Jünger waren am nächsten Tag wieder an dieser Stelle,

The First Disciples

Again, the next day, John stood with two of his disciples.

als Jesus vorüberging. Da schaute Johannes ihn an und sagte: »Seht, dies ist Gottes Opferlamm!«

And looking at Jesus as He walked, he said, “Behold the Lamb of God!”

Als die beiden Jünger das hörten, folgten sie Jesus.

The two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus.

Jesus drehte sich zu ihnen um, sah sie kommen und fragte: »Was sucht ihr?« Sie antworteten: »Rabbi, wo wohnst du?«

Then Jesus turned, and seeing them following, said to them, “What do you seek?”
They said to Him, “Rabbi” (which is to say, when translated, Teacher), “where are You staying?”

»Kommt mit, dann werdet ihr es sehen!«, sagte Jesus. Also gingen sie mit Jesus dorthin, wo er wohnte. Es war ungefähr vier Uhr nachmittags, und sie blieben bei ihm bis zum Abend.

He said to them, “Come and see.” They came and saw where He was staying, and remained with Him that day (now it was about the tenth hour).

Einer der beiden, die Jesus auf das Wort von Johannes hin gefolgt waren, hieß Andreas. Er war der Bruder von Simon Petrus.

One of the two who heard John speak, and followed Him, was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother.

Wenig später traf er seinen Bruder Simon und erzählte ihm: »Wir haben den Messias gefunden, den von Gott versprochenen Retter!«

He first found his own brother Simon, and said to him, “We have found the [l]Messiah” (which is translated, the Christ).

Dann nahm Andreas seinen Bruder mit zu Jesus. Der sah ihn an und sagte: »Du bist Simon, der Sohn von Johannes. Von jetzt an sollst du Petrus heißen!«

And he brought him to Jesus.
Now when Jesus looked at him, He said, “You are Simon the son of [m]Jonah. You shall be called Cephas” (which is translated, [n]A Stone).

Als Jesus am nächsten Tag nach Galiläa gehen wollte, traf er unterwegs Philippus. Auch ihn forderte er auf: »Komm, folge mir nach!«

Philip and Nathanael

The following day Jesus wanted to go to Galilee, and He found Philip and said to him, “Follow Me.”

Philippus stammte wie Andreas und Petrus aus Betsaida.

Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter.

Später begegnete Philippus Nathanael und erzählte ihm: »Wir haben den gefunden, von dem Mose im Gesetz geschrieben hat und den die Propheten angekündigt haben. Es ist Jesus aus Nazareth, der Sohn von Josef.«

Philip found Nathanael and said to him, “We have found Him of whom Moses in the law, and also the prophets, wrote — Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.”

»Nazareth?«, entgegnete Nathanael. »Was kann von da schon Gutes kommen!« Doch Philippus antwortete ihm: »Komm mit und überzeuge dich selbst!«

And Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?”
Philip said to him, “Come and see.”

Als Jesus Nathanael erblickte, sagte er: »Hier kommt ein wahrer Israelit, ein ganz und gar aufrichtiger Mensch!«

Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward Him, and said of him, “Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom is no deceit!”

Nathanael staunte: »Woher kennst du mich?« Jesus erwiderte: »Noch bevor Philippus dich rief, habe ich dich unter dem Feigenbaum gesehen.«

Nathanael said to Him, “How do You know me?”
Jesus answered and said to him, “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.”

»Rabbi, du bist wirklich Gottes Sohn!«, rief Nathanael. »Du bist der König von Israel!«

Nathanael answered and said to Him, “Rabbi, You are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!”

Jesus sagte: »Das glaubst du, weil ich dir gesagt habe, dass ich dich unter dem Feigenbaum sah. Aber du wirst noch viel größere Dinge zu sehen bekommen.«

Jesus answered and said to him, “Because I said to you, ‘I saw you under the fig tree,’ do you believe? You will see greater things than these.”

Und er fuhr fort: »Ich sage euch die Wahrheit: Ihr werdet den Himmel offen und die Engel Gottes hinauf- und herabsteigen sehen zwischen Gott und dem Menschensohn!«

And He said to him, “Most assuredly, I say to you, hereafter[o] you shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man.”
