Wenn ihr in den Krieg zieht und seht, dass eure Feinde zahlreicher sind als ihr und sogar Reiter und Streitwagen besitzen, dann fürchtet euch nicht vor ihnen! Der HERR, euer Gott, der euch aus Ägypten befreit hat, steht euch bei!

“When you go out to battle against your enemies and see horses and chariots and people more numerous than you, do not be afraid of them; for the LORD your God, who brought you up from the land of Egypt, is with you.

Vor der Schlacht soll der Priester zu euren Truppen sprechen.
“When you are approaching the battle, the priest shall come near and speak to the people.
Er soll ihnen sagen: »Hört, ihr Israeliten! Ihr werdet heute gegen eure Feinde kämpfen. Habt keine Angst! Fürchtet euch nicht! Weicht nicht vor ihnen zurück und lasst euch nicht einschüchtern!
“He shall say to them, ‘Hear, O Israel, you are approaching the battle against your enemies today. Do not be fainthearted. Do not be afraid, or panic, or tremble before them,
Der HERR, euer Gott, zieht mit euch in die Schlacht! Er kämpft auf eurer Seite und gibt euch den Sieg über eure Feinde!«
for the LORD your God is the one who goes with you, to fight for you against your enemies, to save you.’
Dann sollen die Männer, die für die Aufstellung des Heeres verantwortlich sind, fragen: »Ist jemand hier, der sich gerade ein neues Haus gebaut hat und es noch nicht einweihen konnte? Er soll gehen und in das Haus einziehen. Sonst stirbt er vielleicht, und ein anderer wohnt schon bald darin.
“The officers also shall speak to the people, saying, ‘Who is the man that has built a new house and has not dedicated it? Let him depart and return to his house, otherwise he might die in the battle and another man would dedicate it.
Hat einer von euch gerade einen Weinberg angelegt, konnte aber noch nichts davon ernten? Er soll heimkehren, damit er nicht im Kampf fällt und ein anderer die Ernte bekommt.
‘Who is the man that has planted a vineyard and has not begun to use its fruit? Let him depart and return to his house, otherwise he might die in the battle and another man would begin to use its fruit.
Ist jemand verlobt, aber noch nicht verheiratet? Er darf auch nach Hause gehen, damit er nicht stirbt und ein anderer seine Verlobte heiratet.«
‘And who is the man that is engaged to a woman and has not married her? Let him depart and return to his house, otherwise he might die in the battle and another man would marry her.’
Weiter sollen die Männer eure Soldaten auffordern: »Jeder, der sich fürchtet und mutlos ist, soll umkehren. Sonst steckt er bloß die anderen mit seiner Angst an.«
“Then the officers shall speak further to the people and say, ‘Who is the man that is afraid and fainthearted? Let him depart and return to his house, so that he might not make his brothers’ hearts melt like his heart.’
Danach sollen die Befehlshaber bestimmt werden, die eure Truppen in die Schlacht führen.
“When the officers have finished speaking to the people, they shall appoint commanders of armies at the head of the people.
Bevor ihr eine Stadt angreift, fordert ihre Einwohner auf, sich kampflos zu ergeben!
“When you approach a city to fight against it, you shall offer it terms of peace.
Gehen sie darauf ein und öffnen euch die Tore, dann müssen sie sich allesamt unterwerfen und für euch arbeiten.
“If it agrees to make peace with you and opens to you, then all the people who are found in it shall become your forced labor and shall serve you.
Wollen sie aber keinen Frieden schließen, sondern Krieg mit euch führen, so belagert sie.
“However, if it does not make peace with you, but makes war against you, then you shall besiege it.
Wenn der HERR, euer Gott, euch dann die Stadt erobern lässt, müsst ihr alle Männer dort mit dem Schwert töten.
“When the LORD your God gives it into your hand, you shall strike all the men in it with the edge of the sword.
Nur die Frauen und Kinder lasst am Leben. Ihr dürft sie zusammen mit dem Vieh und allem, was euch in der Stadt in die Hände fällt, als Beute behalten. Ihr könnt auch die Vorräte essen, die der HERR, euer Gott, euch dort finden lässt.
“Only the women and the children and the animals and all that is in the city, all its spoil, you shall take as booty for yourself; and you shall use the spoil of your enemies which the LORD your God has given you.
So sollt ihr im Kampf gegen die Städte in euren Nachbarländern vorgehen.
“Thus you shall do to all the cities that are very far from you, which are not of the cities of these nations nearby.
Anders ist es bei Städten in dem Gebiet, das der HERR, euer Gott, euch schenken will. Denn von den Völkern, die hier bisher gelebt haben, dürft ihr niemanden am Leben lassen.
“Only in the cities of these peoples that the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance, you shall not leave alive anything that breathes.
An allen müsst ihr Gottes Urteil vollstrecken und sie vollständig vernichten: die Hetiter, Amoriter, Kanaaniter, Perisiter, Hiwiter und Jebusiter. Der HERR hat euch dies befohlen,
“But you shall utterly destroy them, the Hittite and the Amorite, the Canaanite and the Perizzite, the Hivite and the Jebusite, as the LORD your God has commanded you,
damit sie euch nicht zu ihrem abscheulichen Götzendienst verführen und ihr nicht am HERRN, eurem Gott, schuldig werdet.
so that they may not teach you to do according to all their detestable things which they have done for their gods, so that you would sin against the LORD your God.
Wenn ihr eine Stadt längere Zeit belagert, dann zerstört nicht die Bäume in der Umgebung! Lasst sie stehen, sonst habt ihr nichts mehr von ihren Früchten! Oder wollt ihr etwa auch gegen die Bäume kämpfen?
“When you besiege a city a long time, to make war against it in order to capture it, you shall not destroy its trees by swinging an axe against them; for you may eat from them, and you shall not cut them down. For is the tree of the field a man, that it should be besieged by you?
Fällt nur die Bäume, die ganz sicher keine Frucht tragen. Aus ihrem Holz könnt ihr Vorrichtungen für die Belagerung bauen, um die Stadt damit einzunehmen.
“Only the trees which you know are not fruit trees you shall destroy and cut down, that you may construct siegeworks against the city that is making war with you until it falls.
