In Jericho hatte man aus Angst vor den Israeliten sämtliche Tore fest verriegelt. Niemand kam mehr heraus oder hinein.
The Fall of Jericho
Now Jericho was shut up inside and outside because of the people of Israel. None went out, and none came in.

Da sprach der HERR zu Josua: »Ihr werdet sehen: Ich gebe die Stadt, ihren König und seine Soldaten in eure Gewalt.
And the Lord said to Joshua, “See, I have given Jericho into your hand, with its king and mighty men of valor.
Sechs Tage lang sollt ihr jeden Tag einmal mit allen kampffähigen Männern um die Stadt ziehen.
You shall march around the city, all the men of war going around the city once. Thus shall you do for six days.
Nehmt die Bundeslade mit! Lasst sieben Priester mit Widderhörnern in der Hand vor ihr hergehen! Am siebten Tag sollt ihr siebenmal um die Stadt ziehen, und die Priester sollen die Hörner blasen.
Seven priests shall bear seven trumpets of rams’ horns before the ark. On the seventh day you shall march around the city seven times, and the priests shall blow the trumpets.
Wenn der langgezogene Signalton des Widderhorns ertönt, so stimmt ein lautes Kriegsgeschrei an! Dann wird die Stadtmauer einstürzen, und ihr könnt von allen Seiten nach Jericho eindringen.«
Josua, der Sohn von Nun, rief die Priester zusammen und wies sie an: »Nehmt die Bundeslade des HERRN! Sieben von euch sollen mit Widderhörnern vor ihr herziehen.«
So Joshua the son of Nun called the priests and said to them, “Take up the ark of the covenant and let seven priests bear seven trumpets of rams’ horns before the ark of the Lord.”
Dem Heer befahl er: »Macht euch bereit und geht um Jericho herum, einige Kämpfer als Vorhut, dahinter die Priester mit der Bundeslade und am Schluss alle übrigen Soldaten!«
And he said to the people, “Go forward. March around the city and let the armed men pass on before the ark of the Lord.”
Nachdem Josua seine Anweisungen gegeben hatte, stießen die Priester in die Hörner, und alle brachen auf. An der Spitze des Zuges marschierte die ausgewählte Vorhut. Hinter ihr gingen die sieben Priester, die nun unablässig ihre Hörner bliesen, und die anderen Priester mit der Bundeslade. Den Schluss bildete das übrige Heer.
And just as Joshua had commanded the people, the seven priests bearing the seven trumpets of rams’ horns before the Lord went forward, blowing the trumpets, with the ark of the covenant of the Lord following them.
Zuvor hatte Josua angeordnet: »Macht keinen Lärm! Verhaltet euch ganz still, bis ich euch befehle, ein lautes Kriegsgeschrei anzustimmen. Dann aber schreit, so laut ihr könnt!«
But Joshua commanded the people, “You shall not shout or make your voice heard, neither shall any word go out of your mouth, until the day I tell you to shout. Then you shall shout.”
So zogen sie mit der Bundeslade einmal um Jericho herum und kehrten anschließend wieder in ihr Lager zurück, wo sie übernachteten.
So he caused the ark of the Lord to circle the city, going about it once. And they came into the camp and spent the night in the camp.
Früh am nächsten Morgen ließ Josua sie wieder aufbrechen: Die Priester trugen die Bundeslade,
Then Joshua rose early in the morning, and the priests took up the ark of the Lord.
sieben von ihnen gingen vor der Bundeslade her und bliesen immerzu die Hörner, eine Gruppe von Soldaten marschierte voraus, und alle übrigen folgten.
And the seven priests bearing the seven trumpets of rams’ horns before the ark of the Lord walked on, and they blew the trumpets continually. And the armed men were walking before them, and the rear guard was walking after the ark of the Lord, while the trumpets blew continually.
Wie am Vortag zogen die Israeliten einmal um Jericho herum und kehrten dann in ihr Lager zurück. Das taten sie insgesamt sechs Tage lang.
And the second day they marched around the city once, and returned into the camp. So they did for six days.
Am siebten Tag brachen sie bereits bei Sonnenaufgang auf und zogen wie zuvor um die Stadt herum, an diesem Tag jedoch siebenmal.
On the seventh day they rose early, at the dawn of day, and marched around the city in the same manner seven times. It was only on that day that they marched around the city seven times.
Beim siebten Mal, als die Priester die Hörner bliesen, rief Josua seinen Männern zu: »Schreit, so laut ihr könnt! Der HERR gibt euch Jericho!
And at the seventh time, when the priests had blown the trumpets, Joshua said to the people, “Shout, for the Lord has given you the city.
Die ganze Stadt ist dem Untergang geweiht. Darum löscht alles aus, was ihr darin findet! Nur die Prostituierte Rahab soll am Leben bleiben und jeder, der bei ihr im Haus ist, denn sie hat unsere Kundschafter versteckt.
Hütet euch davor, irgendetwas für euch zu behalten, worüber Gott sein Urteil verhängt hat! Sonst stürzt ihr Israel ins Unglück und bringt dieselbe Strafe über unser Volk, die ihr an Jericho vollstrecken sollt.
But you, keep yourselves from the things devoted to destruction, lest when you have devoted them you take any of the devoted things and make the camp of Israel a thing for destruction and bring trouble upon it.
Das Silber und Gold und die Gegenstände aus Bronze und Eisen gehören dem HERRN. Sie sollen in der Schatzkammer des heiligen Zeltes aufbewahrt werden.«
But all silver and gold, and every vessel of bronze and iron, are holy to the Lord; they shall go into the treasury of the Lord.”
Die Priester bliesen ihre Hörner, und die Soldaten stimmten das Kriegsgeschrei an. Da stürzte die Mauer von Jericho ein. Die Israeliten stürmten die Stadt von allen Seiten und eroberten sie.
So the people shouted, and the trumpets were blown. As soon as the people heard the sound of the trumpet, the people shouted a great shout, and the wall fell down flat, so that the people went up into the city, every man straight before him, and they captured the city.
Mit ihren Schwertern vernichteten sie alles Leben darin: Männer und Frauen, Kinder und Greise, Rinder, Schafe und Esel.
Then they devoted all in the city to destruction, both men and women, young and old, oxen, sheep, and donkeys, with the edge of the sword.
Den beiden jungen Männern, die Jericho erkundet hatten, befahl Josua: »Geht zum Haus der Prostituierten und holt sie und ihre Angehörigen heraus, wie ihr es geschworen habt!«
But to the two men who had spied out the land, Joshua said, “Go into the prostitute’s house and bring out from there the woman and all who belong to her, as you swore to her.”
Die beiden liefen zu Rahabs Haus, brachten sie zusammen mit ihren Eltern, Geschwistern und allen Verwandten aus der Stadt und führten sie an einen Ort außerhalb des israelitischen Lagers.
So the young men who had been spies went in and brought out Rahab and her father and mother and brothers and all who belonged to her. And they brought all her relatives and put them outside the camp of Israel.
Schließlich steckte man Jericho in Brand. Nur das Silber, das Gold und die bronzenen und eisernen Gegenstände nahmen die Israeliten mit und brachten sie in die Schatzkammer des heiligen Zeltes.
And they burned the city with fire, and everything in it. Only the silver and gold, and the vessels of bronze and of iron, they put into the treasury of the house of the Lord.
Von den Einwohnern der Stadt ließ Josua niemanden am Leben außer der Prostituierten Rahab, der Familie ihres Vaters und ihren anderen Verwandten. Denn sie hatte die israelitischen Kundschafter versteckt, die Josua nach Jericho gesandt hatte. Noch heute lebt sie in Israel.
But Rahab the prostitute and her father’s household and all who belonged to her, Joshua saved alive. And she has lived in Israel to this day, because she hid the messengers whom Joshua sent to spy out Jericho.
Als Jericho niederbrannte, sprach Josua einen Fluch aus: »Die Strafe des HERRN soll den treffen, der diese Stadt wieder aufbaut. Wenn er das Fundament legt, muss er dafür mit dem Tod seines ältesten Sohnes bezahlen, und wenn er die Tore einsetzt, wird er auch noch seinen jüngsten verlieren.«
Joshua laid an oath on them at that time, saying, “Cursed before the Lord be the man who rises up and rebuilds this city, Jericho.
“At the cost of his firstborn shall he
lay its foundation,
and at the cost of his youngest son
shall he set up its gates.”
