Aber das Volk sprach: Du sollst nicht ausziehen; denn ob wir gleich fliehen oder die Hälfte sterben, so werden sie unser nicht achten; denn du bist wie unser 10,000; so ist’s nun besser, daß du uns von der Stadt aus helfen mögest.

Doch sie wandten ein: »Tu das nicht! Wenn wir vor den Feinden fliehen müssen oder sogar die Hälfte von uns im Kampf fällt, bedeutet ihnen das nicht so viel wie dein Tod. Denn du bist für sie wichtiger als zehntausend von uns! Bleib lieber in der Stadt und komm uns im Notfall mit Verstärkung zu Hilfe.«

Doch sie erwiderten: Du sollst nicht mit uns in den Kampf ziehen; denn wenn wir fliehen, wird man sich um uns nicht kümmern; und wenn die Hälfte von uns stirbt, wird man sich um uns nicht kümmern. Doch du giltst so viel wie zehntausend von uns und außerdem wäre es besser, wenn du uns von der Stadt aus zu Hilfe kommen könntest.
