Und David ordnete das Volk, das bei ihm war, und setzte über sie Hauptleute, über 1000 und über 100,
und stellte des Volks einen dritten Teil unter Joab und einen dritten Teil unter Abisai, den Sohn der Zeruja, Joabs Bruder, und einen dritten Teil unter Itthai, den Gathiter. Und der König sprach zum Volk: Ich will auch mit euch ausziehen.
He sent the troops out in three groups, placing one group under Joab, one under Joab’s brother Abishai son of Zeruiah, and one under Ittai, the man from Gath. The king told his troops, “I am going out with you.”
Aber das Volk sprach: Du sollst nicht ausziehen; denn ob wir gleich fliehen oder die Hälfte sterben, so werden sie unser nicht achten; denn du bist wie unser 10,000; so ist’s nun besser, daß du uns von der Stadt aus helfen mögest.
But his men objected strongly. “You must not go,” they urged. “If we have to turn and run — and even if half of us die — it will make no difference to Absalom’s troops; they will be looking only for you. You are worth 10,000 of us,b and it is better that you stay here in the town and send help if we need it.”
Der König sprach zu ihnen: Was euch gefällt, das will ich tun. Und der König trat ans Tor, und alles Volk zog aus bei Hunderten und bei Tausenden.
“If you think that’s the best plan, I’ll do it,” the king answered. So he stood alongside the gate of the town as all the troops marched out in groups of hundreds and of thousands.
Und der König gebot Joab und Abisai und Itthai und sprach: Fahret mir säuberlich mit dem Knaben Absalom! Und alles Volk hörte es, da der König gebot allen Hauptleuten um Absalom.
And the king gave this command to Joab, Abishai, and Ittai: “For my sake, deal gently with young Absalom.” And all the troops heard the king give this order to his commanders.
Und da das Volk hinauskam aufs Feld, Israel entgegen, erhob sich der Streit im Walde Ephraim.
So the battle began in the forest of Ephraim,
Und das Volk Israel ward daselbst geschlagen vor den Knechten Davids, daß desselben Tages eine große Schlacht geschah, 20,000 Mann.
and the Israelite troops were beaten back by David’s men. There was a great slaughter that day, and 20,000 men laid down their lives.
Und war daselbst der Streit zerstreut auf allem Lande; und der Wald fraß viel mehr Volk des Tages, denn das Schwert fraß.
The battle raged all across the countryside, and more men died because of the forest than were killed by the sword.
Und Absalom begegnete den Knechten Davids und ritt auf einem Maultier. Und da das Maultier unter eine große Eiche mit dichten Zweigen kam, blieb sein Haupt an der Eiche hangen, und er schwebte zwischen Himmel und Erde; aber sein Maultier lief unter ihm weg.
Da das ein Mann sah, sagte er’s Joab an und sprach: Siehe, ich sah Absalom an einer Eiche hangen.
One of David’s men saw what had happened and told Joab, “I saw Absalom dangling from a great tree.”
Und Joab sprach zu dem Mann, der’s ihm hatte angesagt: Siehe, sahst du das, warum schlugst du ihn nicht daselbst zur Erde? so wollte ich dir von meinetwegen zehn Silberlinge und einen Gürtel gegeben haben.
Der Mann sprach zu Joab: Wenn du mir 1000 Silberlinge in meine Hand gewogen hättest, so wollte ich dennoch meine Hand nicht an des Königs Sohn gelegt haben; denn der König gebot dir und Abisai und Itthai vor unsern Ohren und sprach: Hütet euch, daß nicht jemand dem Knaben Absalom…!
Oder wenn ich etwas Falsches getan hätte auf meiner Seele Gefahr, weil dem König nichts verhohlen wird, würdest du selbst wider mich gestanden sein.
And if I had betrayed the king by killing his son — and the king would certainly find out who did it — you yourself would be the first to abandon me.”
Joab sprach: Ich kann nicht so lange bei dir verziehen. Da nahm Joab drei Spieße in seine Hand und stieß sie Absalom ins Herz, da er noch lebte an der Eiche.
“Enough of this nonsense,” Joab said. Then he took three daggers and plunged them into Absalom’s heart as he dangled, still alive, in the great tree.
Und zehn Knappen, Joabs Waffenträger, machten sich umher und schlugen ihn zu Tod.
Ten of Joab’s young armor bearers then surrounded Absalom and killed him.
Da blies Joab die Posaune und brachte das Volk wieder, daß es nicht weiter Israel nachjagte; den Joab wollte des Volks schonen.
Then Joab blew the ram’s horn, and his men returned from chasing the army of Israel.
Und sie nahmen Absalom und warfen ihn in den Wald in eine große Grube und legten einen sehr großen Haufen Steine auf ihn. Und das ganze Israel floh, ein jeglicher in seine Hütte.
They threw Absalom’s body into a deep pit in the forest and piled a great heap of stones over it. And all Israel fled to their homes.
Absalom aber hatte sich eine Säule aufgerichtet, da er noch lebte; die steht im Königsgrunde. Denn er sprach: Ich habe keinen Sohn, darum soll dies meines Namens Gedächtnis sein; er hieß die Säule nach seinem Namen, und sie heißt auch bis auf diesen Tag Absaloms Mal.
During his lifetime, Absalom had built a monument to himself in the King’s Valley, for he said, “I have no son to carry on my name.” He named the monument after himself, and it is known as Absalom’s Monument to this day.
Ahimaaz, der Sohn Zadoks, sprach: Laß mich doch laufen und dem König verkündigen, daß der HERR ihm Recht verschafft hat von seiner Feinde Händen.
David Mourns Absalom’s Death
Then Zadok’s son Ahimaaz said, “Let me run to the king with the good news that the LORD has rescued him from his enemies.”
Joab aber sprach zu ihm: Du bringst heute keine gute Botschaft. Einen andern Tag sollst du Botschaft bringen, und heute nicht; denn des Königs Sohn ist tot.
“No,” Joab told him, “it wouldn’t be good news to the king that his son is dead. You can be my messenger another time, but not today.”
Aber zu Chusi sprach Joab: Gehe hin und sage dem König an, was du gesehen hast. Und Chusi neigte sich vor Joab und lief.
Ahimaaz aber, der Sohn Zadoks, sprach abermals zu Joab: Wie, wenn ich auch liefe dem Chusi nach? Joab sprach: Was willst du laufen, Mein Sohn? Komm her, die Botschaft wird dir nichts einbringen.
But Ahimaaz continued to plead with Joab, “Whatever happens, please let me go, too.”
“Why should you go, my son?” Joab replied. “There will be no reward for your news.”

Wie, wenn ich liefe? Er sprach zu ihm: So laufe doch! Also lief Ahimaaz geradewegs und kam Chusi vor.
“Yes, but let me go anyway,” he begged.
Joab finally said, “All right, go ahead.” So Ahimaaz took the less demanding route by way of the plain and ran to Mahanaim ahead of the Ethiopian.

David aber saß zwischen den beiden Toren. Und der Wächter ging aufs Dach des Tors an der Mauer und hob seine Augen auf und sah einen Mann laufen allein
While David was sitting between the inner and outer gates of the town, the watchman climbed to the roof of the gateway by the wall. As he looked, he saw a lone man running toward them.
und rief und sagte es dem König an. Der König aber sprach: Ist er allein, so ist eine gute Botschaft in seinem Munde. Und da derselbe immer näher kam,
He shouted the news down to David, and the king replied, “If he is alone, he has news.”

sah der Wächter einen andern Mann laufen, und rief in das Tor und sprach: Siehe, ein Mann läuft allein. Der König aber sprach: Der ist auch ein guter Bote.
the watchman saw another man running toward them. He shouted down, “Here comes another one!”

Der Wächter sprach: Ich sehe des ersten Lauf wie den Lauf des Ahimaaz, des Sohnes Zadoks. Und der König sprach: Es ist ein guter Mann und bringt eine gute Botschaft.
“The first man runs like Ahimaaz son of Zadok,” the watchman said.
“He is a good man and comes with good news,” the king replied.

Ahimaaz aber rief und sprach zum König: Friede! Und fiel nieder vor dem König auf sein Antlitz zur Erde und sprach: Gelobt sei der HERR, dein Gott, der die Leute, die ihre Hand wider meinen Herrn, den König, aufhoben, übergeben hat.
Then Ahimaaz cried out to the king, “Everything is all right!” He bowed before the king with his face to the ground and said, “Praise to the LORD your God, who has handed over the rebels who dared to stand against my lord the king.”
Der König aber sprach: Geht es auch wohl dem Knaben Absalom? Ahimaaz sprach: Ich sah ein großes Getümmel, da des Königs Knecht Joab mich, deinen Knecht, sandte, und weiß nicht, was es war.
“What about young Absalom?” the king demanded. “Is he all right?”
Ahimaaz replied, “When Joab told me to come, there was a lot of commotion. But I didn’t know what was happening.”

Der König sprach: Gehe herum und tritt daher. Und er ging herum und stand allda.
“Wait here,” the king told him. So Ahimaaz stepped aside.
Siehe, da kam Chusi und sprach: Hier gute Botschaft, mein Herr König! Der HERR hat dir heute Recht verschafft von der Hand aller, die sich wider dich auflehnten.
Then the man from Ethiopia arrived and said, “I have good news for my lord the king. Today the LORD has rescued you from all those who rebelled against you.”
Der König aber sprach zu Chusi: Geht es dem Knaben Absalom auch wohl? Chusi sprach: Es müsse allen Feinden meines Herrn Königs gehen, wie es dem Knaben geht, und allen, die sich wider dich auflehnen, übel zu tun.
“What about young Absalom?” the king demanded. “Is he all right?”
And the Ethiopian replied, “May all of your enemies, my lord the king, both now and in the future, share the fate of that young man!”
