Darby Bible Translation

New Living Translation

  • Solomon's Foreign Wives

    But king Solomon loved many foreign women, besides the daughter of Pharaoh: women of the Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites, Zidonians, Hittites;
  • Solomon’s Many Wives

    Now King Solomon loved many foreign women. Besides Pharaoh’s daughter, he married women from Moab, Ammon, Edom, Sidon, and from among the Hittites.
  • of the nations of which Jehovah had said to the children of Israel, Ye shall not go in to them, neither shall they come in to you; they would certainly turn away your heart after their gods: to these Solomon was attached in love.
  • The LORD had clearly instructed the people of Israel, “You must not marry them, because they will turn your hearts to their gods.” Yet Solomon insisted on loving them anyway.
  • And he had seven hundred wives, princesses, and three hundred concubines; and his wives turned away his heart.
  • He had 700 wives of royal birth and 300 concubines. And in fact, they did turn his heart away from the LORD.
  • And it came to pass when Solomon was old, [that] his wives turned away his heart after other gods; and his heart was not perfect with Jehovah his God, as the heart of David his father.
  • In Solomon’s old age, they turned his heart to worship other gods instead of being completely faithful to the LORD his God, as his father, David, had been.
  • And Solomon went after Ashtoreth the goddess of the Zidonians, and after Milcom the abomination of the Ammonites.
  • Solomon worshiped Ashtoreth, the goddess of the Sidonians, and Molech,a the detestable god of the Ammonites.
  • And Solomon did evil in the sight of Jehovah, and followed not fully Jehovah, as David his father.
  • In this way, Solomon did what was evil in the LORD’s sight; he refused to follow the LORD completely, as his father, David, had done.
  • Then did Solomon build a high place for Chemosh the abomination of the Moabites, on the hill that is before Jerusalem, and for Molech the abomination of the children of Ammon.
  • On the Mount of Olives, east of Jerusalem,b he even built a pagan shrine for Chemosh, the detestable god of Moab, and another for Molech, the detestable god of the Ammonites.
  • And so he did for all his foreign wives, who burned incense and sacrificed to their gods.
  • Solomon built such shrines for all his foreign wives to use for burning incense and sacrificing to their gods.
  • God's Anger against Solomon

    And Jehovah was angry with Solomon, because his heart was turned away from Jehovah the God of Israel, who had appeared to him twice,
  • The LORD was very angry with Solomon, for his heart had turned away from the LORD, the God of Israel, who had appeared to him twice.
  • and had commanded him concerning this thing, not to go after other gods; but he kept not what Jehovah had commanded.
  • He had warned Solomon specifically about worshiping other gods, but Solomon did not listen to the LORD’s command.
  • And Jehovah said to Solomon, Forasmuch as this is done by thee, and thou hast not kept my covenant and my statutes which I commanded thee, I will certainly rend the kingdom from thee, and will give it to thy servant:
  • So now the LORD said to him, “Since you have not kept my covenant and have disobeyed my decrees, I will surely tear the kingdom away from you and give it to one of your servants.
  • notwithstanding in thy days I will not do it, for David thy father's sake; I will rend it out of the hand of thy son;
  • But for the sake of your father, David, I will not do this while you are still alive. I will take the kingdom away from your son.
  • only, I will not rend away all the kingdom: I will give one tribe to thy son, for David my servant's sake, and for Jerusalem's sake which I have chosen.
  • And even so, I will not take away the entire kingdom; I will let him be king of one tribe, for the sake of my servant David and for the sake of Jerusalem, my chosen city.”
  • Hadad's Return

    And Jehovah stirred up an adversary to Solomon, Hadad the Edomite; he was of the king's seed in Edom.

  • Solomon’s Adversaries

    Then the LORD raised up Hadad the Edomite, a member of Edom’s royal family, to be Solomon’s adversary.
  • Now it came to pass when David was in Edom, when Joab the captain of the host had gone up to bury the slain, after he had smitten every male in Edom
  • Years before, David had defeated Edom. Joab, his army commander, had stayed to bury some of the Israelite soldiers who had died in battle. While there, they killed every male in Edom.
  • (for Joab abode there six months with all Israel, until he had cut off every male in Edom),
  • Joab and the army of Israel had stayed there for six months, killing them.
  • that Hadad fled, he and certain Edomites of his father's servants with him, to go into Egypt, Hadad being yet a little child.
  • But Hadad and a few of his father’s royal officials escaped and headed for Egypt. (Hadad was just a boy at the time.)
  • And they arose out of Midian, and came to Paran, and took men with them out of Paran, and they came to Egypt, to Pharaoh king of Egypt; who gave him a house, and appointed him victuals, and gave him land.
  • They set out from Midian and went to Paran, where others joined them. Then they traveled to Egypt and went to Pharaoh, who gave them a home, food, and some land.
  • And Hadad found great favour in the sight of Pharaoh, and he gave him as wife the sister of his own wife, the sister of Tahpenes the queen.
  • Pharaoh grew very fond of Hadad, and he gave him his wife’s sister in marriage — the sister of Queen Tahpenes.
  • And the sister of Tahpenes bore him Genubath his son; and Tahpenes brought him up in Pharaoh's house; and Genubath was in Pharaoh's household, among the sons of Pharaoh.
  • She bore him a son named Genubath. Tahpenes raised himc in Pharaoh’s palace among Pharaoh’s own sons.
  • And Hadad heard in Egypt that David slept with his fathers, and that Joab the captain of the host was dead; and Hadad said to Pharaoh, Let me depart, that I may go to mine own country.
  • When the news reached Hadad in Egypt that David and his commander Joab were both dead, he said to Pharaoh, “Let me return to my own country.”
  • And Pharaoh said to him, What then dost thou lack with me, that behold, thou desirest to go to thine own country? And he said, Nothing; but in any case let me depart.
  • “Why?” Pharaoh asked him. “What do you lack here that makes you want to go home?”
    “Nothing,” he replied. “But even so, please let me return home.”
  • Rezon's Hostility

    God stirred him up yet an adversary, Rezon the son of Eliada, who had fled from Hadadezer king of Zobah, his lord.
  • God also raised up Rezon son of Eliada as Solomon’s adversary. Rezon had fled from his master, King Hadadezer of Zobah,
  • And he collected men to him, and became captain of a band, when David slew them [of Zobah]; and they went to Damascus, and dwelt there, and reigned in Damascus.
  • and had become the leader of a gang of rebels. After David conquered Hadadezer, Rezon and his men fled to Damascus, where he became king.
  • And he was an adversary to Israel all the days of Solomon, besides the mischief that Hadad [did]; and he abhorred Israel, and reigned over Syria.
  • Rezon was Israel’s bitter adversary for the rest of Solomon’s reign, and he made trouble, just as Hadad did. Rezon hated Israel intensely and continued to reign in Aram.
  • Jeroboam's Rebellion

    And Jeroboam the son of Nebat, an Ephrathite of Zeredah, Solomon's servant (whose mother's name was Zeruah, a widow woman), even he lifted up his hand against the king.

  • Jeroboam Rebels against Solomon

    Another rebel leader was Jeroboam son of Nebat, one of Solomon’s own officials. He came from the town of Zeredah in Ephraim, and his mother was Zeruah, a widow.
  • And this was the cause that he lifted up his hand against the king: Solomon was building Millo, and closing the breach of the city of David his father;
  • This is the story behind his rebellion. Solomon was rebuilding the supporting terracesd and repairing the walls of the city of his father, David.
  • and the man Jeroboam was strong and valiant; and Solomon saw the young man that he was industrious, and he made him ruler over all the charge of the house of Joseph.
  • Jeroboam was a very capable young man, and when Solomon saw how industrious he was, he put him in charge of the labor force from the tribes of Ephraim and Manasseh, the descendants of Joseph.
  • And it came to pass at that time that Jeroboam went out of Jerusalem, and the prophet Ahijah the Shilonite found him in the way; and he had clad himself with a new garment; and they two were alone in the field.
  • One day as Jeroboam was leaving Jerusalem, the prophet Ahijah from Shiloh met him along the way. Ahijah was wearing a new cloak. The two of them were alone in a field,
  • Then Ahijah seized the new garment that was on him, and rent it in twelve pieces;
  • and Ahijah took hold of the new cloak he was wearing and tore it into twelve pieces.
  • and said to Jeroboam, Take thee ten pieces; for thus saith Jehovah the God of Israel: Behold, I will rend the kingdom out of the hand of Solomon, and will give ten tribes to thee;
  • Then he said to Jeroboam, “Take ten of these pieces, for this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘I am about to tear the kingdom from the hand of Solomon, and I will give ten of the tribes to you!
  • but one tribe shall he have for my servant David's sake, and for Jerusalem's sake, the city which I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel:
  • But I will leave him one tribe for the sake of my servant David and for the sake of Jerusalem, which I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel.
  • because they have forsaken me, and have worshipped Ashtoreth the goddess of the Zidonians, Chemosh the god of the Moabites, and Milcom the god of the children of Ammon, and have not walked in my ways, to do that which is right in my sight, and my statutes and mine ordinances, as David his father.
  • For Solomon hase abandoned me and worshiped Ashtoreth, the goddess of the Sidonians; Chemosh, the god of Moab; and Molech, the god of the Ammonites. He has not followed my ways and done what is pleasing in my sight. He has not obeyed my decrees and regulations as David his father did.
  • But I will not take the whole kingdom out of his hand; for I will make him prince all the days of his life for David my servant's sake, whom I chose, who kept my commandments and my statutes;
  • “‘But I will not take the entire kingdom from Solomon at this time. For the sake of my servant David, the one whom I chose and who obeyed my commands and decrees, I will keep Solomon as leader for the rest of his life.
  • but I will take the kingdom out of his son's hand, and will give it unto thee, -- the ten tribes.
  • But I will take the kingdom away from his son and give ten of the tribes to you.
  • And unto his son will I give one tribe, that David my servant may have a lamp always before me in Jerusalem, the city that I have chosen for myself to put my name there.
  • His son will have one tribe so that the descendants of David my servant will continue to reign, shining like a lamp in Jerusalem, the city I have chosen to be the place for my name.
  • And I will take thee, that thou mayest reign over all that thy soul desireth, and thou shalt be king over Israel.
  • And I will place you on the throne of Israel, and you will rule over all that your heart desires.
  • And it shall be, if thou wilt hearken unto all that I command thee, and wilt walk in my ways, and do that which is right in my sight, in keeping my statutes and my commandments, as David my servant did, that I will be with thee, and build thee a lasting house, as I built for David, and will give Israel unto thee.
  • If you listen to what I tell you and follow my ways and do whatever I consider to be right, and if you obey my decrees and commands, as my servant David did, then I will always be with you. I will establish an enduring dynasty for you as I did for David, and I will give Israel to you.
  • And I will for this afflict the seed of David, but not for ever.
  • Because of Solomon’s sin I will punish the descendants of David — though not forever.’”
  • And Solomon sought to kill Jeroboam; and Jeroboam arose and fled into Egypt, to Shishak king of Egypt; and he was in Egypt until the death of Solomon.
  • Solomon tried to kill Jeroboam, but he fled to King Shishak of Egypt and stayed there until Solomon died.
  • The Death of Solomon

    And the rest of the acts of Solomon, and all that he did, and his wisdom, are they not written in the book of the acts of Solomon?

  • Summary of Solomon’s Reign

    The rest of the events in Solomon’s reign, including all his deeds and his wisdom, are recorded in The Book of the Acts of Solomon.
  • And the time that Solomon reigned in Jerusalem over all Israel was forty years.
  • Solomon ruled in Jerusalem over all Israel for forty years.
  • And Solomon slept with his fathers, and was buried in the city of David his father; and Rehoboam his son reigned in his stead.
  • When he died, he was buried in the City of David, named for his father. Then his son Rehoboam became the next king.
