For one who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God; for no one understands, but in his spirit he speaks mysteries.
Denn wer in Zungen redet, redet nicht zu Menschen, sondern zu Gott; keiner versteht ihn: Im Geist redet er geheimnisvolle Dinge.
But one who prophesies speaks to men for edification and exhortation and consolation.
Wer aber prophetisch redet, redet zu Menschen: Er baut auf, ermutigt, spendet Trost.
One who speaks in a tongue edifies himself; but one who prophesies edifies the church.
Wer in Zungen redet, erbaut sich selbst; wer aber prophetisch redet, baut die Gemeinde auf.
Now I wish that you all spoke in tongues, but even more that you would prophesy; and greater is one who prophesies than one who speaks in tongues, unless he interprets, so that the church may receive edifying.
Ich wünschte, ihr alle würdet in Zungen reden, weit mehr aber, ihr würdet prophetisch reden. Der Prophet steht höher als der, der in Zungen redet, es sei denn, er übersetzt sein Reden, damit die Gemeinde aufgebaut wird.
But now, brethren, if I come to you speaking in tongues, what will I profit you unless I speak to you either by way of revelation or of knowledge or of prophecy or of teaching?
Was nützt es euch, Brüder und Schwestern, wenn ich zu euch komme und in Zungen rede, euch aber keine Offenbarung, keine Erkenntnis, keine Prophetie, keine Lehre bringe?
Yet even lifeless things, either flute or harp, in producing a sound, if they do not produce a distinction in the tones, how will it be known what is played on the flute or on the harp?
Wenn leblose Musikinstrumente, eine Flöte oder eine Harfe, nicht deutlich unterschiedene Töne hervorbringen, wie soll man dann erkennen, was auf der Flöte oder was auf der Harfe gespielt wird?
For if the bugle produces an indistinct sound, who will prepare himself for battle?
Und wenn die Trompete unklare Töne hervorbringt, wer wird dann zu den Waffen greifen?
So also you, unless you utter by the tongue speech that is clear, how will it be known what is spoken? For you will be speaking into the air.
So ist es auch mit euch, wenn ihr in Zungen redet, aber kein verständliches Wort hervorbringt. Wer soll dann das Gesprochene verstehen? Ihr redet nur in den Wind.
There are, perhaps, a great many kinds of languages in the world, and no kind is without meaning.
Es gibt wer weiß wie viele Sprachen in der Welt und nichts ist ohne Sprache.
If then I do not know the meaning of the language, I will be to the one who speaks a barbarian, and the one who speaks will be a barbarian to me.
Wenn ich nun den Sinn der Sprache nicht kenne, bin ich für den Sprecher ein Fremder, wie der Sprecher für mich.
So also you, since you are zealous of spiritual gifts, seek to abound for the edification of the church.
So ist es auch mit euch. Da ihr nach Geistesgaben strebt, gebt euch Mühe, dass ihr damit vor allem zum Aufbau der Gemeinde beitragt!
Therefore let one who speaks in a tongue pray that he may interpret.
Deswegen soll einer, der in Zungen redet, beten, dass er es auch übersetzen kann.
For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful.
Denn wenn ich in Zungen bete, betet zwar mein Geist, mein Verstand aber bleibt unfruchtbar.
What is the outcome then? I will pray with the spirit and I will pray with the mind also; I will sing with the spirit and I will sing with the mind also.
Was folgt daraus? Ich will im Geist beten, ich will aber auch mit dem Verstand beten. Ich will im Geist lobsingen, ich will aber auch mit dem Verstand lobsingen.
Otherwise if you bless in the spirit only, how will the one who fills the place of the ungifted say the “Amen” at your giving of thanks, since he does not know what you are saying?
Wenn du nur im Geist den Lobpreis sprichst und ein Unkundiger anwesend ist, wie kann er zu deinem Dankgebet das Amen sprechen; er versteht ja nicht, was du sagst.
For you are giving thanks well enough, but the other person is not edified.
Dein Dankgebet mag noch so gut sein, aber der andere wird nicht auferbaut.
I thank God, I speak in tongues more than you all;
Ich danke Gott, dass ich mehr als ihr alle in Zungen rede.
however, in the church I desire to speak five words with my mind so that I may instruct others also, rather than ten thousand words in a tongue.
Doch vor der Gemeinde will ich lieber fünf Worte mit meinem Verstand reden, um auch andere zu unterweisen, als zehntausend Worte in Zungen stammeln.
Instruction for the Church
Brethren, do not be children in your thinking; yet in evil be infants, but in your thinking be mature.
Seid doch nicht Kinder an Einsicht, Brüder und Schwestern! Seid unmündig an Bosheit, an Einsicht aber seid vollkommen!
In the Law it is written, “BY MEN OF STRANGE TONGUES AND BY THE LIPS OF STRANGERS I WILL SPEAK TO THIS PEOPLE, AND EVEN SO THEY WILL NOT LISTEN TO ME,” says the Lord.
Im Gesetz steht: Durch Leute, die anders und in anderen Sprachen reden, werde ich zu diesem Volk sprechen; aber auch so werden sie nicht auf mich hören, spricht der Herr.
So then tongues are for a sign, not to those who believe but to unbelievers; but prophecy is for a sign, not to unbelievers but to those who believe.
So ist Zungenreden ein Zeichen nicht für die Glaubenden, sondern für die Ungläubigen, prophetisches Reden aber ein Zeichen nicht für die Ungläubigen, sondern für die Glaubenden.
Therefore if the whole church assembles together and all speak in tongues, and ungifted men or unbelievers enter, will they not say that you are mad?
Wenn also die ganze Gemeinde sich versammelt und alle in Zungen reden und es kommen Unkundige oder Ungläubige herein, werden sie dann nicht sagen: Ihr seid verrückt?
But if all prophesy, and an unbeliever or an ungifted man enters, he is convicted by all, he is called to account by all;
Wenn aber alle prophetisch reden und ein Ungläubiger oder Unkundiger kommt herein, dann wird er von allen überführt, von allen geprüft;
the secrets of his heart are disclosed; and so he will fall on his face and worship God, declaring that God is certainly among you.
was in seinem Herzen verborgen ist, wird aufgedeckt. Und so wird er niederfallen auf sein Angesicht, Gott anbeten und bekennen: Wahrhaftig, Gott ist bei euch!
What is the outcome then, brethren? When you assemble, each one has a psalm, has a teaching, has a revelation, has a tongue, has an interpretation. Let all things be done for edification.
Was soll also geschehen, Brüder und Schwestern? Wenn ihr zusammenkommt, trägt jeder etwas bei: einer einen Psalm, ein anderer eine Lehre, der dritte eine Offenbarung; einer redet in Zungen und ein anderer übersetzt es. Alles geschehe so, dass es aufbaut.
If anyone speaks in a tongue, it should be by two or at the most three, and each in turn, and one must interpret;
Wenn man in Zungen reden will, so sollen es nur zwei tun, höchstens drei, und zwar einer nach dem anderen; dann soll einer übersetzen.
but if there is no interpreter, he must keep silent in the church; and let him speak to himself and to God.
Wenn aber niemand übersetzen kann, soll der Zungenredner in der Gemeinde schweigen. Er soll es bei sich selber tun und vor Gott.
Let two or three prophets speak, and let the others pass judgment.
Auch zwei oder drei Propheten sollen zu Wort kommen; die anderen sollen urteilen.
But if a revelation is made to another who is seated, the first one must keep silent.
Wenn aber noch einem andern Anwesenden eine Offenbarung zuteilwird, soll der erste schweigen;
For you can all prophesy one by one, so that all may learn and all may be exhorted;
einer nach dem andern könnt ihr alle prophetisch reden. So lernen alle etwas und alle werden ermutigt.
and the spirits of prophets are subject to prophets;
Die Äußerung prophetischer Eingebungen ist nämlich dem Willen der Propheten unterworfen.
for God is not a God of confusion but of peace, as in all the churches of the saints.
Denn Gott ist nicht ein Gott der Unordnung, sondern ein Gott des Friedens. Wie es in allen Gemeinden der Heiligen üblich ist,
The women are to keep silent in the churches; for they are not permitted to speak, but are to subject themselves, just as the Law also says.
sollen die Frauen in den Versammlungen schweigen; es ist ihnen nicht gestattet zu reden: Sie sollen sich unterordnen, wie auch das Gesetz sagt.
If they desire to learn anything, let them ask their own husbands at home; for it is improper for a woman to speak in church.
Wenn sie etwas lernen wollen, dann sollen sie zu Hause ihre Männer fragen; denn es gehört sich nicht für eine Frau, in der Versammlung zu reden.
Was it from you that the word of God first went forth? Or has it come to you only?
Ist etwa das Gotteswort von euch ausgegangen? Ist es etwa nur zu euch gekommen?
If anyone thinks he is a prophet or spiritual, let him recognize that the things which I write to you are the Lord’s commandment.
Wenn einer meint, Prophet zu sein oder geisterfüllt, soll er in dem, was ich euch schreibe, ein Gebot des Herrn erkennen.
But if anyone does not recognize this, he is not recognized.
Wer das nicht anerkennt, wird nicht anerkannt.
Therefore, my brethren, desire earnestly to prophesy, and do not forbid to speak in tongues.
Strebt also nach dem prophetischen Reden, meine Brüder und Schwestern, und verhindert nicht das Reden in Zungen!
