The Birth of John the Baptist Foretold
In the time of Herod king of Judea there was a priest named Zechariah, who belonged to the priestly division of Abijah; his wife Elizabeth was also a descendant of Aaron.

Zu der Zeit des Herodes, des Königs von Judäa, war ein Priester von der Ordnung Abia, mit Namen Zacharias, und sein Weib war von den Töchtern Aarons, welche hieß Elisabeth.
Both of them were righteous in the sight of God, observing all the Lord’s commands and decrees blamelessly.
Sie waren aber alle beide fromm vor Gott und wandelten in allen Geboten und Satzungen des HERRN untadelig.
But they were childless because Elizabeth was not able to conceive, and they were both very old.
Und sie hatten kein Kind; denn Elisabeth war unfruchtbar, und waren beide wohl betagt.
Once when Zechariah’s division was on duty and he was serving as priest before God,
Und es begab sich, da er des Priesteramts pflegte vor Gott zur Zeit seiner Ordnung,
he was chosen by lot, according to the custom of the priesthood, to go into the temple of the Lord and burn incense.
nach Gewohnheit des Priestertums, und an ihm war, daß er räuchern sollte, ging er in den Tempel des HERRN.
And when the time for the burning of incense came, all the assembled worshipers were praying outside.
Und die ganze Menge des Volks war draußen und betete unter der Stunde des Räucherns.
Then an angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing at the right side of the altar of incense.
Es erschien ihm aber der Engel des HERRN und stand zur rechten Hand am Räucheraltar.
When Zechariah saw him, he was startled and was gripped with fear.
Und als Zacharias ihn sah, erschrak er, und es kam ihn eine Furcht an.
But the angel said to him: “Do not be afraid, Zechariah; your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you are to call him John.
Aber der Engel sprach zu ihm: Fürchte dich nicht, Zacharias! denn dein Gebet ist erhört, und dein Weib Elisabeth wird dir einen Sohn gebären, des Namen sollst du Johannes heißen.
He will be a joy and delight to you, and many will rejoice because of his birth,
Und du wirst des Freude und Wonne haben, und viele werden sich seiner Geburt freuen.
for he will be great in the sight of the Lord. He is never to take wine or other fermented drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit even before he is born.
Denn er wird groß sein vor dem HERRN; Wein und starkes Getränk wird er nicht trinken und wird noch im Mutterleibe erfüllt werden mit dem heiligen Geist.
He will bring back many of the people of Israel to the Lord their God.
Und er wird der Kinder von Israel viele zu Gott, ihrem HERRN, bekehren.
And he will go on before the Lord, in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the parents to their children and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous — to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.”
Und er wird vor ihm her gehen im Geist und Kraft Elia’s zu bekehren die Herzen der Väter zu den Kindern und die Ungläubigen zu der Klugheit der Gerechten, zuzurichten dem HERRN ein bereitet Volk.
Zechariah asked the angel, “How can I be sure of this? I am an old man and my wife is well along in years.”
Und Zacharias sprach zu dem Engel: Wobei soll ich das erkennen? Denn ich bin alt, und mein Weib ist betagt.
The angel said to him, “I am Gabriel. I stand in the presence of God, and I have been sent to speak to you and to tell you this good news.
Der Engel antwortete und sprach zu ihm: Ich bin Gabriel, der vor Gott steht, und bin gesandt, mit dir zu reden, daß ich dir solches verkündigte.
And now you will be silent and not able to speak until the day this happens, because you did not believe my words, which will come true at their appointed time.”
Und siehe, du wirst verstummen und nicht reden können bis auf den Tag, da dies geschehen wird, darum daß du meinen Worten nicht geglaubt hast, welche sollen erfüllt werden zu ihrer Zeit.
Meanwhile, the people were waiting for Zechariah and wondering why he stayed so long in the temple.
Und das Volk wartete auf Zacharias und verwunderte sich, daß er so lange im Tempel verzog.
When he came out, he could not speak to them. They realized he had seen a vision in the temple, for he kept making signs to them but remained unable to speak.
Und da er herausging, konnte er nicht mit ihnen reden; und sie merkten, daß er ein Gesicht gesehen hatte im Tempel. Und er winkte ihnen und blieb stumm.
When his time of service was completed, he returned home.
Und es begab sich, da die Zeit seines Amts aus war, ging er heim in sein Haus.
After this his wife Elizabeth became pregnant and for five months remained in seclusion.
Und nach den Tagen ward sein Weib Elisabeth schwanger und verbarg sich fünf Monate und sprach:
“The Lord has done this for me,” she said. “In these days he has shown his favor and taken away my disgrace among the people.”
Also hat mir der HERR getan in den Tagen, da er mich angesehen hat, daß er meine Schmach unter den Menschen von mir nähme.

In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee,

Und im sechsten Monat ward der Engel Gabriel gesandt von Gott in eine Stadt in Galiläa, die heißt Nazareth,
to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary.
zu einer Jungfrau, die vertraut war einem Manne mit Namen Joseph, vom Hause David; und die Jungfrau hieß Maria.
The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.”
Und der Engel kam zu ihr hinein und sprach: Gegrüßet seist du, Holdselige! Der HERR ist mit dir, du Gebenedeite unter den Weibern!
Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be.
Da sie aber ihn sah, erschrak sie über seine Rede und gedachte: Welch ein Gruß ist das?
But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God.
Und der Engel sprach zu ihr: Fürchte dich nicht, Maria! du hast Gnade bei Gott gefunden.
You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus.
Siehe, du wirst schwanger werden und einen Sohn gebären, des Namen sollst du Jesus heißen.
He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David,
Der wird groß sein und ein Sohn des Höchsten genannt werden; und Gott der HERR wird ihm den Stuhl seines Vaters David geben;
and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom will never end.”
und er wird ein König sein über das Haus Jakob ewiglich, und seines Königreichs wird kein Ende sein.
“How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?”
Da sprach Maria zu dem Engel: Wie soll das zugehen, sintemal ich von keinem Manne weiß?
Der Engel antwortete und sprach zu ihr: Der heilige Geist wird über dich kommen, und die Kraft des Höchsten wird dich überschatten; darum wird auch das Heilige, das von dir geboren wird, Gottes Sohn genannt werden.
Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be unable to conceive is in her sixth month.
Und siehe, Elisabeth, deine Gefreunde, ist auch schwanger mit einem Sohn in ihrem Alter und geht jetzt im sechsten Monat, von der man sagt, daß sie unfruchtbar sei.
“I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May your word to me be fulfilled.” Then the angel left her.
Maria aber sprach: Siehe, ich bin des HERRN Magd; mir geschehe, wie du gesagt hast. Und der Engel schied von ihr.
Mary Visits Elizabeth

where she entered Zechariah’s home and greeted Elizabeth.
und kam in das Haus des Zacharias und grüßte Elisabeth.
When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit.
Und es begab sich, als Elisabeth den Gruß Marias hörte, hüpfte das Kind in ihrem Leibe. Und Elisabeth ward des heiligen Geistes voll
In a loud voice she exclaimed: “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear!
und rief laut und sprach: Gebenedeit bist du unter den Weibern, und gebenedeit ist die Frucht deines Leibes!
But why am I so favored, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?
Und woher kommt mir das, daß die Mutter meines HERRN zu mir kommt?
As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy.
Siehe, da ich die Stimme deines Grußes hörte, hüpfte mit Freuden das Kind in meinem Leibe.
Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfill his promises to her!”
Und o selig bist du, die du geglaubt hast! denn es wird vollendet werden, was dir gesagt ist von dem HERRN.
Mary’s Song
And Mary said:
“My soul glorifies the Lord
And Mary said:

Und Maria sprach: Meine Seele erhebet den HERRN,
for he has been mindful
of the humble state of his servant.
From now on all generations will call me blessed,

His mercy extends to those who fear him,

Und seine Barmherzigkeit währet immer für und für bei denen, die ihn fürchten.

Mary stayed with Elizabeth for about three months and then returned home.
Und Maria blieb bei ihr bei drei Monaten; darnach kehrte sie wiederum heim.
The Birth of John the Baptist
When it was time for Elizabeth to have her baby, she gave birth to a son.

Her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had shown her great mercy, and they shared her joy.
Und ihre Nachbarn und Gefreunde hörten, daß der HERR große Barmherzigkeit an ihr getan hatte, und freuten sich mit ihr.
On the eighth day they came to circumcise the child, and they were going to name him after his father Zechariah,
Und es begab sich am achten Tage, da kamen sie, zu beschneiden das Kindlein, und hießen ihn nach seinem Vater Zacharias.
but his mother spoke up and said, “No! He is to be called John.”
Aber seine Mutter antwortete und sprach: Mitnichten, sondern er soll Johannes heißen.
They said to her, “There is no one among your relatives who has that name.”
Und sie sprachen zu ihr: Ist doch niemand in deiner Freundschaft, der also heiße.
Then they made signs to his father, to find out what he would like to name the child.
Und sie winkten seinem Vater, wie er ihn wollte heißen lassen.
He asked for a writing tablet, and to everyone’s astonishment he wrote, “His name is John.”
Und er forderte ein Täfelein und schrieb also: Er heißt Johannes. Und sie verwunderten sich alle.
Immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue set free, and he began to speak, praising God.
Und alsbald ward sein Mund und seine Zunge aufgetan, und er redete und lobte Gott.
All the neighbors were filled with awe, and throughout the hill country of Judea people were talking about all these things.
Und es kam eine Furcht über alle Nachbarn; und die ganze Geschichte ward ruchbar auf dem ganzen jüdischen Gebirge.
Everyone who heard this wondered about it, asking, “What then is this child going to be?” For the Lord’s hand was with him.
Und alle, die es hörten, nahmen’s zu Herzen und sprachen: Was, meinst du, will aus dem Kindlein werden? Denn die Hand des HERRN war mit ihm.
Zechariah’s Song

und hat uns aufgerichtet ein Horn des Heils in dem Hause seines Dieners David,

salvation from our enemies
and from the hand of all who hate us —
and from the hand of all who hate us —
daß er uns errettete von unseren Feinden und von der Hand aller, die uns hassen,
to show mercy to our ancestors
and to remember his holy covenant,

und Barmherzigkeit erzeigte unsern Vätern und gedächte an seinen heiligen Bund
the oath he swore to our father Abraham:
und an den Eid, den er geschworen hat unserm Vater Abraham, uns zu geben,
to rescue us from the hand of our enemies,
and to enable us to serve him without fear
and to enable us to serve him without fear
daß wir, erlöst aus der Hand unsrer Feinde, ihm dienten ohne Furcht unser Leben lang
in holiness and righteousness before him all our days.
in Heiligkeit und Gerechtigkeit, die ihm gefällig ist.
And you, my child, will be called a prophet of the Most High;
for you will go on before the Lord to prepare the way for him,

Und du, Kindlein, wirst ein Prophet des Höchsten heißen. Du wirst vor dem HERRN her gehen, daß du seinen Weg bereitest

und Erkenntnis des Heils gebest seinem Volk, das da ist in Vergebung ihrer Sünden;
because of the tender mercy of our God,

durch die herzliche Barmherzigkeit unsers Gottes, durch welche uns besucht hat der Aufgang aus der Höhe,
to shine on those living in darkness

auf daß er erscheine denen, die da sitzen in Finsternis und Schatten des Todes, und richte unsere Füße auf den Weg des Friedens.
