Then it happened in the spring, at the time when kings go out to battle, that David sent Joab and his servants with him and all Israel, and they destroyed the sons of Ammon and besieged Rabbah. But David stayed at Jerusalem.

Als David einmal zur Abendzeit von seinem Lager aufstand und auf dem Flachdach des Königspalastes hin- und herging, sah er von dort aus eine Frau, die badete. Die Frau war sehr schön anzusehen.
Now when evening came David arose from his bed and walked around on the roof of the king’s house, and from the roof he saw a woman bathing; and the woman was very beautiful in appearance.
David schickte jemand hin, erkundigte sich nach ihr und sagte: Ist das nicht Batseba, die Tochter Ammiëls, die Frau des Hetiters Urija?
So David sent and inquired about the woman. And one said, “Is this not Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?”
Darauf schickte David Boten zu ihr und ließ sie holen; sie kam zu ihm und er schlief mit ihr — sie hatte sich gerade von ihrer Unreinheit gereinigt. Dann kehrte sie in ihr Haus zurück.
David sent messengers and took her, and when she came to him, he lay with her; and when she had purified herself from her uncleanness, she returned to her house.
Die Frau war aber schwanger geworden und schickte deshalb zu David und ließ ihm mitteilen: Ich bin schwanger.
The woman conceived; and she sent and told David, and said, “I am pregnant.”
Darauf sandte David zu Joab und ließ ihm sagen: Schick den Hetiter Urija zu mir! Und Joab schickte Urija zu David.
Then David sent to Joab, saying, “Send me Uriah the Hittite.” So Joab sent Uriah to David.
Als Urija zu ihm kam, fragte David, ob es Joab und dem Volk gut gehe und wie es mit dem Kampf stehe.
When Uriah came to him, David asked concerning the welfare of Joab and the people and the state of the war.
Dann sagte er zu Urija: Geh in dein Haus hinab und wasch dir die Füße! Urija verließ das Haus des Königs und es wurde ihm ein Geschenk des Königs nachgetragen.
Then David said to Uriah, “Go down to your house, and wash your feet.” And Uriah went out of the king’s house, and a present from the king was sent out after him.
Urija aber legte sich am Tor des Königshauses bei den Knechten seines Herrn nieder und ging nicht in sein Haus hinab.
But Uriah slept at the door of the king’s house with all the servants of his lord, and did not go down to his house.
Man berichtete David: Urija ist nicht in sein Haus hinabgegangen. Darauf sagte David zu Urija: Bist du nicht gerade von einer Reise gekommen? Warum bist du nicht in dein Haus hinuntergegangen?
Now when they told David, saying, “Uriah did not go down to his house,” David said to Uriah, “Have you not come from a journey? Why did you not go down to your house?”
Urija antwortete David: Die Lade und Israel und Juda wohnen in Hütten und mein Herr Joab und die Knechte meines Herrn lagern auf freiem Feld; da soll ich in mein Haus gehen, um zu essen und zu trinken und bei meiner Frau zu liegen? So wahr du lebst und so wahr deine Seele lebt, das werde ich nicht tun.
Uriah said to David, “The ark and Israel and Judah are staying in temporary shelters, and my lord Joab and the servants of my lord are camping in the open field. Shall I then go to my house to eat and to drink and to lie with my wife? By your life and the life of your soul, I will not do this thing.”
Darauf sagte David zu Urija: Bleib auch heute noch hier; morgen werde ich dich wegschicken. So blieb Urija an jenem und am folgenden Tag in Jerusalem.
Then David said to Uriah, “Stay here today also, and tomorrow I will let you go.” So Uriah remained in Jerusalem that day and the next.
David lud ihn ein, bei ihm zu essen und zu trinken, und machte ihn betrunken. Am Abend aber ging Urija weg, um sich wieder auf seinem Lager bei den Knechten seines Herrn niederzulegen; er ging nicht in sein Haus hinab.
Now David called him, and he ate and drank before him, and he made him drunk; and in the evening he went out to lie on his bed with his lord’s servants, but he did not go down to his house.
Am anderen Morgen schrieb David einen Brief an Joab und ließ ihn durch Urija überbringen.
Now in the morning David wrote a letter to Joab and sent it by the hand of Uriah.
Er schrieb in dem Brief: Stellt Urija nach vorn, wo der Kampf am heftigsten ist, dann zieht euch von ihm zurück, sodass er getroffen wird und den Tod findet!
He had written in the letter, saying, “Place Uriah in the front line of the fiercest battle and withdraw from him, so that he may be struck down and die.”
Joab hatte die Stadt beobachtet und er stellte Urija an einen Platz, von dem er wusste, dass dort besonders tüchtige Krieger standen.
So it was as Joab kept watch on the city, that he put Uriah at the place where he knew there were valiant men.
Als dann die Leute aus der Stadt einen Ausfall machten und gegen Joab kämpften, fielen einige vom Volk, das heißt von den Kriegern Davids; auch der Hetiter Urija fand den Tod.
The men of the city went out and fought against Joab, and some of the people among David’s servants fell; and Uriah the Hittite also died.
Joab schickte zu David und ließ ihm den Verlauf des Kampfes berichten.
Then Joab sent and reported to David all the events of the war.
Und er befahl dem Boten: Wenn du dem König alles über den Verlauf des Kampfes bis zu Ende berichtet hast
He charged the messenger, saying, “When you have finished telling all the events of the war to the king,
und wenn dann der König in Zorn gerät und zu dir sagt: Warum seid ihr beim Kampf so nahe an die Stadt herangegangen? Habt ihr nicht gewusst, dass sie von der Mauer herabschießen?
and if it happens that the king’s wrath rises and he says to you, ‘Why did you go so near to the city to fight? Did you not know that they would shoot from the wall?
Wer hat Abimelech, den Sohn Jerubbaals, erschlagen? Hat nicht eine Frau in Tebez einen Mühlstein von der Mauer auf ihn herabgeworfen, sodass er starb? Warum seid ihr so nahe an die Mauer herangegangen?, dann sollst du sagen: Auch dein Knecht, der Hetiter Urija, ist tot.
‘Who struck down Abimelech the son of Jerubbesheth? Did not a woman throw an upper millstone on him from the wall so that he died at Thebez? Why did you go so near the wall?’ — then you shall say, ‘Your servant Uriah the Hittite is dead also.’”
Der Bote ging fort, kam zu David und berichtete ihm alles, was Joab ihm aufgetragen hatte.
So the messenger departed and came and reported to David all that Joab had sent him to tell.
Der Bote sagte zu David: Die Männer waren stärker als wir und waren gegen uns bis aufs freie Feld vorgedrungen; wir aber drängten sie bis zum Eingang des Tores zurück.
The messenger said to David, “The men prevailed against us and came out against us in the field, but we pressed them as far as the entrance of the gate.
Da schossen die Schützen von der Mauer herab auf deine Knechte, sodass einige von den Knechten des Königs starben; auch dein Knecht, der Hetiter Urija, ist tot.
“Moreover, the archers shot at your servants from the wall; so some of the king’s servants are dead, and your servant Uriah the Hittite is also dead.”
Da sagte David zu dem Boten: So sollst du zu Joab sagen: Betrachte die Sache nicht als so schlimm; denn das Schwert frisst bald hier, bald dort. Setz den Kampf gegen die Stadt mutig fort und zerstöre sie! So sollst du ihm Mut machen.
Then David said to the messenger, “Thus you shall say to Joab, ‘Do not let this thing displease you, for the sword devours one as well as another; make your battle against the city stronger and overthrow it’; and so encourage him.”
Als die Frau Urijas hörte, dass ihr Mann Urija tot war, hielt sie für ihren Gemahl die Totenklage.
Now when the wife of Uriah heard that Uriah her husband was dead, she mourned for her husband.
Sobald die Trauerzeit vorüber war, ließ David sie zu sich in sein Haus holen. Sie wurde seine Frau und gebar ihm einen Sohn. In den Augen des HERRN aber war böse, was David getan hatte.
When the time of mourning was over, David sent and brought her to his house and she became his wife; then she bore him a son. But the thing that David had done was evil in the sight of the LORD.
