Genesis 35

Gott sprach zu Jakob: »Mach dich auf und zieh wieder nach Bethel! Bleib dort und bau mir einen Altar. Denn an diesem Ort bin ich dir erschienen, als du auf der Flucht vor deinem Bruder Esau warst.«

Jacob’s Return to Bethel

Then God said to Jacob, “Arise, go up to Bethel and dwell there; and make an altar there to God, who appeared to you when you fled from the face of Esau your brother.”

Jakob befahl seiner Familie und denen, die zu ihm gehörten: »Werft alle Götterfiguren weg, die ihr noch bei euch habt! Wascht euch und zieht saubere Kleidung an, um rein vor Gott zu treten!

And Jacob said to his household and to all who were with him, “Put away the foreign gods that are among you, purify yourselves, and change your garments.

Wir gehen jetzt nach Bethel. Dort will ich für Gott einen Altar bauen, denn er ist es, der in der Not meine Gebete erhört hat. Während meiner ganzen Reise bis hierher ist er immer bei mir gewesen!«

Then let us arise and go up to Bethel; and I will make an altar there to God, who answered me in the day of my distress and has been with me in the way which I have gone.”

Sie gaben Jakob alle Götterfiguren sowie die Amulette, die sie an den Ohren trugen, und er vergrub sie unter der Eiche bei Sichem.

So they gave Jacob all the foreign [a]gods which were in their hands, and the earrings which were in their ears; and Jacob hid them under the terebinth tree which was by Shechem.

Dann machte sich die ganze Familie auf den Weg. Gott versetzte die Einwohner der Städte ringsum in so große Angst, dass sie es nicht wagten, Jakob und seine Söhne zu verfolgen.

And they journeyed, and the terror of God was upon the cities that were all around them, and they did not pursue the sons of Jacob.

So erreichten sie Lus im Land Kanaan, das heute Bethel heißt.

So Jacob came to Luz (that is, Bethel), which is in the land of Canaan, he and all the people who were with him.

Dort baute Jakob einen Altar und nannte die Opferstätte »Gott von Bethel«. Denn an dieser Stelle war Gott ihm einst erschienen, als er vor seinem Bruder Esau fliehen musste.

And he built an altar there and called the place [b]El Bethel, because there God appeared to him when he fled from the face of his brother.

Noch während sie in dieser Gegend lagerten, starb Debora, die früher Rebekkas Kindermädchen gewesen war. Sie wurde unter der Eiche im Tal von Bethel begraben, die seitdem »Träneneiche« heißt.

Now Deborah, Rebekah’s nurse, died, and she was buried below Bethel under the terebinth tree. So the name of it was called [c]Allon Bachuth.

Gott erschien Jakob erneut und segnete ihn. Es war das zweite Mal seit seiner Rückkehr aus Mesopotamien.

Then God appeared to Jacob again, when he came from Padan Aram, and blessed him.

»Von jetzt an sollst du nicht mehr Jakob heißen, sondern Israel. Das ist dein neuer Name!«, sagte er.

And God said to him, “Your name is Jacob; your name shall not be called Jacob anymore, but Israel shall be your name.” So He called his name Israel.

»Ich bin der allmächtige Gott. Ich werde dir so viele Nachkommen schenken, dass nicht nur ein Volk, sondern eine ganze Schar von Völkern daraus entsteht — sogar Könige sollen von dir abstammen!

Also God said to him: “I am God Almighty. Be fruitful and multiply; a nation and a company of nations shall proceed from you, and kings shall come from your body.

Dir und deinen Nachkommen gebe ich das Land, das ich Abraham und Isaak versprochen habe.«

The land which I gave Abraham and Isaac I give to you; and to your descendants after you I give this land.”

Nachdem Gott dies gesagt hatte, erhob er sich wieder zum Himmel,

Then God went[d] up from him in the place where He talked with him.

und Jakob errichtete an der Stelle einen Gedenkstein. Er schüttete Wein als ein Trankopfer darüber und begoss ihn mit Öl, um ihn Gott zu weihen.

So Jacob set up a pillar in the place where He talked with him, a pillar of stone; and he poured a drink offering on it, and he poured oil on it.

Weil Gott an diesem Ort zu ihm gesprochen hatte, nannte er ihn Bethel (»Haus Gottes«).

And Jacob called the name of the place where God spoke with him, Bethel.

Danach verließen sie Bethel und zogen weiter. Als sie nur noch ein kurzes Stück von Efrata entfernt waren, setzten bei Rahel starke Geburtswehen ein.

Death of Rachel

Then they journeyed from Bethel. And when there was but a little distance to go to Ephrath, Rachel labored in childbirth, and she had hard labor.

Sie krümmte sich vor Schmerzen, doch die Hebamme rief ihr zu: »Nur Mut, du hast wieder einen Sohn!«

Now it came to pass, when she was in hard labor, that the midwife said to her, “Do not fear; you will have this son also.”

Aber Rahel spürte, dass sie sterben musste. Darum nannte sie den Jungen Benoni (»Schmerzenskind«), Jakob jedoch gab ihm den Namen Benjamin (»Glückskind«).

And so it was, as her soul was departing (for she died), that she called his name [e]Ben-Oni; but his father called him [f]Benjamin.

Rahel starb, und Jakob begrub sie an der Straße nach Efrata, das jetzt Bethlehem heißt.

So Rachel died and was buried on the way to Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem).

Dort errichtete er einen Gedenkstein, der bis heute die Stelle markiert, wo Rahel begraben liegt.

And Jacob set a pillar on her grave, which is the pillar of Rachel’s grave to this day.

Dann zog Jakob mit seiner Familie weiter und schlug seine Zelte hinter Migdal-Eder auf.

Then Israel journeyed and pitched his tent beyond the tower of Eder.

Damals schlief Ruben mit Bilha, der Nebenfrau seines Vaters, und Jakob erfuhr davon. Inzwischen hatte Jakob zwölf Söhne:

And it happened, when Israel dwelt in that land, that Reuben went and lay with Bilhah his father’s concubine; and Israel heard about it.
Jacob’s Twelve Sons

Now the sons of Jacob were twelve:

Von Lea stammten der erstgeborene Sohn Ruben sowie Simeon, Levi, Juda, Issachar und Sebulon;

the sons of Leah were Reuben, Jacob’s firstborn, and Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, and Zebulun;

Rahel brachte Josef und Benjamin zur Welt;

the sons of Rachel were Joseph and Benjamin;

Rahels Magd Bilha bekam Dan und Naftali,

the sons of Bilhah, Rachel’s maidservant, were Dan and Naphtali;

und von Leas Magd Silpa stammten Gad und Asser. Alle wurden in Mesopotamien geboren.

and the sons of Zilpah, Leah’s maidservant, were Gad and Asher. These were the sons of Jacob who were born to him in Padan Aram.

Jakob zog weiter zu seinem Vater Isaak nach Mamre bei Kirjat-Arba, das heute Hebron heißt. Dort hatte schon Abraham gewohnt.

Death of Isaac

Then Jacob came to his father Isaac at Mamre, or Kirjath Arba[g] (that is, Hebron), where Abraham and Isaac had dwelt.

Isaak starb im Alter von 180 Jahren nach einem langen und erfüllten Leben und wurde im Tod mit seinen Vorfahren vereint. Seine Söhne Esau und Jakob begruben ihn.

Now the days of Isaac were one hundred and eighty years.
